Both my father and mother are elementary school teachers in mainly Hispanic zones in Houston. They've seen a steady decline in children assistance in the past two months precisely because they do not want to expose the parents. Honestly, we are worried about what will happen to their jobs if the trend continues.

Just watched the video, it makes me even more sick that it's other Mexicans doing this shit to their own people.
There's a saying in my country. "The worst enemy of a Mexican is another Mexican".

It's true most of the time, and it's very depressing. Empathy is a weakness, it seems.

Not to mention that anyone here would be an idiot to try and get citizenship now and expose themselves. People are going to be hiding and turning to crime to survive more than ever.

So he had the time in those 20 years to have kids and get a DUI and not bother to become a citizen? Sorry, but I've gotten a DUI and served jail time for my own mistakes. He could have served the same if he went through the process of becoming a legal citizen. No sympathy. Adios.

It sucks for the kids, but maybe don't break laws in a country you're not a legal resident in. His fault his kids will have to suffer through all this.
My father and sister started the citizenship process as soon as we moved from Mexico. Not only did they end up spending over 50k, it took them nearly seven years. And that's with native-born American wife and son, so they were on the fast track.

Sigh.

There is no such thing as an illegal immigrant here, it is a political term. Being an undocumented immigrant is not a crime, enforcement is a civil matter and deportation is not a punishment. It's almost too bad that none of this is actually the case because then these people would be entitled to things like due process

Half of the undocumented immigrants in the USA arrived here legally, many of them had sustained periods of legal residency which they lost for any number of reasons, sometimes after building lives and starting families here. People who fall into this gap are going to have a much more difficult time re-establishing legal residency, especially permanent citizenship

And of course we are talking about direct harm being inflicted on American children for...what exactly? The fear seeping into these communities for...what exactly? Who are they protecting? What is the objective? Surely nobody here would suggest this is a noble cause? That we are stronger thanks to this?

It's absolutely 100% concentrated pure evil so let's stop minimizing what is happening with this "do the crime do the time" trash nonsense

Yeah let's blame the workers for the directives given from their superiors. I guess all the ICE workers should just quit right? I mean, who cares about the families they are trying to support, they are all just scum.

Which is exactly what these fuckwits wants. It gives them an excuse to deport them! SEE! THEY'RE DOING CRIME!

Fascists are around us and not enough of us seem to care.

In truth, I'm sure most, if not all the people upset are upset with the ICE department & the current administration. No one is seriously trying to place all the blame on one individual ICE employee.

The "I was just following orders" defence is yet another eerie example of Godwin's Law suffering its pathetic and overdrawn demise.

Man, those Nazis were just following orders man! Sure, they destroyed a ton of lives, but they had families feed!

LOL at you using "just following orders" without a shadow of irony.

They did fine under Obama. Deporting actual criminals, and not pretending to be police.

If your job requires you to do things that are morally reprehensible, then yes.

You do know in the military you are at fault for following morally reprehensible orders, right?

Like, I get it. These people have their own families to feed. But that doesn't justify it. It never has and never will. There are lines that aren't crossed. This is one of them, IMO.

Well in all fairness, if you work for ICE this is probably along the lines of the work you wanted to do. It'd be a different story if the government was, I dunno, deploying Air Marshals or fucking CIA operatives to deport illegal immigrants, then there'd be a legit "this ain't what I signed up for."

And more to the point, if they knew when he would be dropping his kids off to school then yeah, they probably knew another place they could have picked him up not in front of his child, getting him at that point was a conscious decision someone made. Couldn't even do the job and leave the man with a little dignity.

Oh. I guess we can't even bash the ICE workers for tearing families apart. Because people like you would cry about it, right?

very disharnting tho and i hope el trumpo is over thrown sooner than later.

I don't understand how the US still allows people who are born to illegal immigrants to be automatic citizens. Citizenship at birth should only be bestowed on those born to legally documented people. This person may have been that when his children were born so I don't mean that specifically, but for anyone who actually did get in illegally and planted roots, they shouldn't be able to use their children's citizenship as a shield.

I'm obviously completely against these deportations, my thoughts are closer to deporting no one at all in fact.

That said, I'm also not particularly happy with this trend of trying to make out a DUI as some sort of minor crime that everyone commits. That's very serious and can kill people. There are plenty of grounds for disputing this without portraying DUIs as a youthful mistake.

Thank you for referring to us as shields and how we shouldn't be US citizens. I appreciate it.

He's got a lot of low intelligence people cheering him on. They deserve getting robbed blind by him/russians, jobless, and dying with no healthcare. America needs this. So that every single trump supporter can understand how to be a human being in a civil society.

Jus Soli is applied by nearly the entire Western Hemisphere. I assume it's a cultural thing that came up from the wars of independence and the necessity to create an American identity separate from the European one.

So sad.

Meanwhile a man is being deported and leaving behind his wife and 4 kids but who gives a shit, right? The real tragedy here is that evil is being called out.

Maybe you should read the US Constitution before chiming in on automatic citizenship?

Mr Pence, you have been in the news enough today.
You will go far here.

What about the other two times he was arrested, AND THEY CHOSE NOT TO DEPORT HIM?
So they wait until he has kids and is staying out of trouble...good stuff.

There's a lot of stupid, heartless, short-sighted people coming out in this topic.

I'm sure you would be fine with men coming in and kicking down your door and dragging you off at gunpoint to a country you've never been to with a language you don't speak and no resources because your parents kept a secret from you.

Is it so hard to become a citizen in america? (genuine question, i don't live there) If after 20 years it's still complicated to become one, this country has a serious problem, i feel bad for this guy!

You don't deport these kind of people, that's inhuman, and pointless

But yes, becoming a citizen is practically impossible for most people, it's not that people just aren't bothering to become one.

The immigration system needs a major rehaul, but partisan politics keep holding it up. The last attempt passed the Senate and stalled in the house.

That's how hard it is to do it "legally." Now imagine how hard it is for someone who came here 10 years ago through another means.

Not to mention, the forms are intentionally difficult for a non-native speaker in order to disqualify them.

Where should children who know no other life than America and no other language than English go?

How about some empathy? What stopped you from being one of those children?

Boohoo.

That's the job they applied for, interviewed for, and so dutifully carried out after tailing a father dropping his children off at school, and I'm sure taking the pay.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I sure feel fucking safer now! Right??

They're scum.

Denunciation in a western world country in the year 2017. I thought we got past that with the fall of the GDR, but then again, walls seem to be back in fashion.

A comment on the article in the OP linked another article estimating there are 50,000 illegal Irish immigrants alone in the US? Damn. 50,000 is like estimated illegal immigrant count for all of Japan total, how are this many people living in the US undocumented?

It's most likely difficult to do legally in most countries.

I'll take the somewhat unpopular position, here on GAF, and somewhat agree. Well, sorta. I'm fine with the current interpretation of the 14th Amendment and I'm fine with it being changed.

My biggest concern, if you can call it that because I'm not concerned about illegal immigration, my biggest thing, about the whole immigration thing is that I think it need to make sense. Trump says not paying taxes makes him smart. It does. Having a child in the United States when you're from another country and taking advantage of our birthright citizenship also makes a person smart. Gaming the system is what America is fucking about. If a majority of Americans truly desire a change to the 14th Amendment and an end to "anchor babies," or whatever offensive term is used now, I can live with that but I think the mature thing to do is make that change first and then change the immigration policy. People with children here, like it or not, are now parent's of American citizens and breaking up families is a terrible thing to do. We shouldn't do it. All it does is puts that family in a worse place. So long as we have birthright citizenship people will try and take advantage of that. And I don't even mean that in a bad way. I would do the same damn thing. It's not even a damn loophole or anything, it's plain as day language so I don't even know if it's taking advantage of the system or gaming anything.

So I guess my stance is, ultimately I'm ok with or without birthright citizenship, but I'm against breaking up families of American citizens, so if we want to deport people change the 14th, if we don't want to change the 14th then we need to accept that as a result of that people will have kids over here and we should leave them and their families alone.

Immigration brings out the most vile trolls, it's the same on any social media platform. You know Trumps clan won't win any intellectual debates so they wage war on the constructed enemy. Latinos/Muslims/LGBT/prisoners, take all the marginalized groups of people and dehumanize them. You can scare a person into becoming a Republican if you make them think there is something to fear and the only protection they have is to be on their side.
