Jahesius Christ...I've called BGII the best game on the planet, but it's been so long since I've played it I've started to doubt its legendary reputation...but there it is. Incredible stuff. Dozens of hours of gameplay just in those six boxes.

I love towns. All I really want to do in video games is explore shit, and typically towns are the best thing to explore. I'm hoping that more and more companies will rip off the Assassin's Creed formula and create towns, both real and imaginary, that I can run around and climb in. That's it, that's all I really want to do.

Anyway, everyone knows the best town in gaming is the one I built in Tropico 4 on tuesday.

(not really my town, just a random screenshot. Mine's even cooler though, sweatergod.)

One not quite "town" that has really stuck with me would be Balamb Garden from FFVIII. Even though there wasn't much to do there I just loved the school/dormitory feel of it and how well it was portrayed in various cutscenes.

You say that now but wait until you're ordered into some secret mission, risking your life for dubious political parties, and being intentionally mis-educated about the amnesia causing GFs you've equiped.

Rapture is absolutely one of my favourite settings in games, but "town" sort of changed my thoughts on the topic. Ended up posting smaller, specific areas within a bigger world.

I didn't actually like Rapture that much. It didn't speak to me so much as a town as it was a series of levels, if you see what I mean.

Great environment though.

Some good choices in the thread (and some terrible ones heh).

I like just about every place in the Raidou games.

Or any town from Katamari.

Places that are fun to look at and explore.

And you know, every single jaw-dropping location in Saga Frontier 2.

I really enjoyed Zoah's Holy District from Panzer Dragoon Saga. I especially loved that you would see it from the the Liberal District side for a while, so it's pretty special when you finally get to visit and see the difference.

Yes! I loved the towns in PDS. The music really brought them to life.. It was sad and kinda when Zoah
got wiped out. It was a big area in the game and not being able to go there anymore was kind of a bummer
.

Skies of Arcadia: Nasr, Pirates Island, Gordo's bistro. Absolutely loved the sense of adventure in this game. Flying around in a huge world finding random islands in the middle of nowhere.

Shenmue: Dobuita, Sakuragaoka. You can say whatever you want to say about Shenmue, but the game did a wonderful job of creating a super immersive world. It felt like a real place, which I suppose it is, but even if it wasn't it made it seem real. I was actually in Tokyo about 3 years ago so I decided to take a train out to Dobuita to see the real thing. Looked for Sakuragaoka too but got lost and eventually gave up. It's a beautiful little city.

Yakuza - Red Light District. I played this right after my trip to Tokyo and it was so cool seeing a lot of the places recreated in here. Going into the Don Quixote store and hearing the music.. I was totally geeking out lol. I loved the dreary overcastish atmosphere this game had.

I like Kalm from FF7 for some reason. It's your first safe haven after leaving Midgar. Really small town but looks inviting.

It's got the noir feel down pat, but it's also the best implementation of the "one year later" story gap in the game. Manny demonstrates his entrepeneurial skills by transforming the diner to a swanky nightclub, and climbs up the social ladder with ease. New characters are introduced with implied existing relationships and events, and interact with Manny accordingly. You explore the town over the course of one night, but the things you experience seem so much more without seeming forced.
You are a lovely human being!

To this day, I always choose "Rubacava" whenever I'm given the option to name a city in a videogame. Best town ever.

It'd be really nice if you'd name the game so that people who are interested in neat towns would know what you're posting!

FYI, the previous post was about Beneath a Steel Sky, which is actually free at GOG.com.

I'm having trouble finding good pictures, but I'd have to say that

Omikron - Omikron: The Nomad Soul

and

Village of Zoah, Panzer Dragoon Saga

were two of the pioneers, for me, in atmospheric, fully-realized 3D places. Also, many of the locations in Anachronox get a special shoutout.

Anyone mention FF12's Rabanastre yet? Probably the most alive town I've ever experienced.

Severe lack of Inoa love in this thread (Alundra).

Especially considering the music. My favorite PS1 game, ever. I replay it every year on my PSP!

Kowloon Walled City also known as "The City of Darkness". It is based on a real life city that was demolished in 1993. It was a seedy lawless city controlled by the triads, full of gambling, drugs and prostitution. It's also famous as Bruce Lee grow up on it's outskirts. I can understand now how he got mixed up in gangs and was in a lot of street fights as a teenager. Which is the catalyst that lead him to learning Martial Arts and was also part of the reason he moved to the US.

Great choice Randomizer.

Also, whoever said Animal Crossing. I loved my village in Animal Crossing...I need to get a Gamecube or Wii one of these days...I still have my memory card.

also, my new village in Minecraft (with KilamanJarJaro in the background) is my favorite new place. I'd post a pic, but my character is balls deep in a mine shaft right now.

I have no idea why, but Kalm immediately popped into my head when I read this thread title. I don't hold it in particularly high regard, I think it was just nice to see something like Kalm after enduring Midgar's doom and gloom for hours.

Jidoor from Final Fantasy VI was always cool, loved the auction house. Summers and of course, Saturn Valley from Earthbound are great too.
