Ferguson: Police Officer Kills 18yo Michael Brown; Protests/Riots Continue

Its funny, the part you bolded, because that's exactly what happened in this thread when there were riots. Lots of people came in with the "I agree something needs to change but rioting is not the answer"

I'm of the mind if riots are what it takes, then fucking riot. The only problem I have is of course the white moderate is going to condemn the rioting and just say see, they are just animals instead of looking at why the people there would be so angry about something that they want to riot.

That's why riots aren't what it takes.

The white mainstream moderates are useless to the struggle. Brown folks would be waiting until the end of time waiting for them to come around. They are lost causes.

White revolutionaries support the struggle, and they are all the support the revolution needs.

So at what time is the decision expected?

There was some "leak" reported on 4chan that the cop isn't going to be indicted. Missouri has declared a state of emergency and asked for the aid of the National Guard in case of mass rioting. This shit is getting crazy.

I hope you people condoning riots have them come to your town and your streets. Because it's mostly outsiders condoning and previously participating in them. The people of Ferguson deserve better. The business owners deserve better. People destroying black homes and black businesses is what you're condoning. Michael Browns parents don't want riots. Ferguson doesn't want riots. St. Louis doesn't want riots. Take your college idealist version of revolution and tear up your own neighborhood. We don't want you here.

Since we all know what's gonna happen...

Whenever I see the updates in this thread, I keep thinking of all the people on GAF who think the plights of people of color in America all break down to simple mental illness and a misunderstanding of both the victims ("He was no angel") and the accused ("We have to see it from his perspective"/"What would YOU do in that situation?"). I keep thinking of all the times people told me that because Obama got elected, racism is no longer a thing (despite the continued discrimination, the erosion of the Voting Rights Act, White officers killing unarmed Black people, the idea that every Black victim in these cases were considered by "some" to be nothing but thugs and never received the benefit of the doubt, the idea of slavery being a good thing being propagated by conservative media, etc.). I keep thinking about the sentiment felt by some that most police officers are good, and that you can't blame all the good ones for the actions of the bad ones (despite the fact that it works opposite for the Black community. When one person of color commits a crime, the entire community is considered responsible for that person's actions, upbringing, parental choices, etc).

I also think about the civil rights movement in Jim Crow times and how much we accomplished. Then, I just remember that it's all for naught, because I don't really see a difference between then and now. For me, racism started out as an implicit kind of thing. But, as I get older, it seems to get more and more blatant every day. And the worst part about all of this is that people still expect my people to be kind and courteous, and still expect us to go on about our business and "wait for a better time". We're expected to have "nuanced discussion" about issues like this. Like none of us feel angry and hopeless to the point of causing violence to others, as well as ourselves (Hint: All the inner city violence, ratchetness, and all around fuckery you see in our community is due to the aforementioned anger and hopelessness. Hard to be positive when everyone is telling you "You ain't shit, and never will be shit").

There is no such thing as "nuance" in a discussion about racism in America. It's simply a Black and White issue; "right" and "wrong", if you will. Asking the persecuted to be considerate about the opinions and lives of the persecutors is akin to an insult. Asking me to place myself in Darren Wilson's shoes is infuriating. Because people like me are in Mike Brown's shoes, or Trayvon Martin's shoes every day we walk out of the house. Asking me to be considerate of someone with a gun, a badge, a bullet proof vest, plenty of backup, and a nice salary to take home? Nah. I can't relate to that. But, I can relate to someone in a hoody, with nothing but some change and some candy in his or her pocket, hoping to make it to his or her next destination with no bullshit poppin' off.

Finally... I keep thinking of this "new black" shit I've been hearing from certain Black celebrities lately. This idea that not only are Black communities completely responsible for their plights, but also the idea that said celebs are somehow above it all and transcend the effects of racism in America just because they made it. It's another way of telling us that they no longer don't care about the communities that they grew up in. A subtle, but much more effective "Fuck you" among all the other "fuck you's" we've been getting. The only time they care is when it can give them a photo op, or a bit more positive PR, or even a few likes on Instagram. They think they are above it all.

It all just reminds me of the beginning of the song "Turn Off the Radio" from Ice Cube's first album, AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted. "A message to the Oreo cookie: No matter how much you wanna switch, here's what they think about you..."

What I'm trying to say with all this is... nobody seems to care anymore. The police don't give a fuck. The politicians don't give a fuck. Influential celebs don't give a fuck. The press stopped giving a fuck until now. And the only time they give a fuck is when they tell us to be calm and wait until everything has cooled down to discuss our plight. Here's the thing, though: we reluctantly oblige, but then this shit happens. When they announce that Darren Wilson will walk, it'll be another "Fuck you" on top of all the other ones. They will be telling us exactly how they feel about us, what they think about us and our plight. They only give enough of a fuck to raise the alarm prematurely, you know, just in case some niggas get rowdy and boost on some PS4's.

The people of Ferguson know this all too well.

Well... I have a feeling that they are about to make everyone give a fuck real quick. And after all that's happened... honestly, who can blame them? I certainly won't...

You are absolutely right, the people of Ferguson do deserve better. The deserve the right to not get shot by the cops for little or no reason. They deserve the right to not have to justify all their actions to police. They deserve the right to not have to pay ridiculous fines and deal with warrants for their arrests on trumped up bullshit charges.

Well... I have a feeling that they are about to make everyone give a fuck real quick. And after all that's happened... honestly, who can blame them? I certainly won't...

The people of Ferguson are boarding up their businesses and locking their doors. The vast majority of the arrests from the previous riots weren't Ferguson residents.

If riots happen, there's going to be a bunch of people shot. There's been a huge surge in firearm purchases during the last few weeks here in St. Louis. This long wait for the grand jury didn't just give protesters time to get ready.

I can feel your pain in this post. When all hope seems lost remember there are plenty of us in this together bro :)

All is not lost because you obviously care. I care, and plenty of people in this thread(both brown, white, and all others) care.

So they deserve to have their town destroyed by outside agitators to fix it? Nonsense. I live in St. Louis. This is not what Ferguson wants. It's what outsiders want. We locals want justice and change without destroying our home.

Everyone outside St. Louis thinks they know what St. Louis wants. They can't even find Ferguson on a fucking map.

So you want change without actually having to go through anything to actually CREATE change?

Then point the riots at the right people by busting up government property, not private.

But we all know it's way more likely for private businesses to feel the wrath, likely because of the few outsiders that want to loot, not protest, are the only ones causing the riots.

Everyone outside St. Louis thinks they know what St. Louis wants. They can't even find Ferguson on a fucking map.

Thank you. This thread is disturbing. People sitting behind their keyboards saying "I hope they burn down their city." I in turn hope someone burns down yours.

Would you describe yourself as a white moderate? Someone, perhaps, who is devoted to order?

Agreed. Taking out your anger on innocent people and property isn't going to solve your problems but it will lose you lots of support.

So you want change without actually having to go through anything to actually CREATE change?

That's a conplete failure of logic. We want change without destroying where we live. It's called protesting, voting and shifting the system. Not burning down the businesses of the good people that live here. Change doesn't require burning down our fucking city.

Would you describe yourself as a white moderate? Someone, perhaps, who is devoted to order?

Come listen to the black people in Ferguson begging on the local radio talk shows to please not riot. Read the stories about how black businesses in Ferguson have failed because it's been weeks without a single customer.

Would you describe yourself as a white moderate? Someone, perhaps, who is devoted to order?

No. I'm an adult with a family and friends in Ferguson that can speak to some extent for other adults here.

Would you describe yourself as a young liberal idealist that doesn't live here and thinks tearing shit up is cool?

So they deserve to have their town destroyed by outside agitators to fix it? Nonsense. I live in St. Louis. This is not what Ferguson wants. It's what outsiders want. We locals want justice and change without destroying our home.
Really, cause the interviews of the local whites that I've seen and read, no one seemed to want justice for mike brown, in fact they seemed to think Darren Wilson was getting railroaded.

Everyone outside St. Louis thinks they know what St. Louis wants. They can't even find Ferguson on a fucking map.

I for one, know exactly where it is, given its less than a 10 minute walk from one of my companies properties we manage. But I can't speak for all the other "outsiders" that you both seem so adamant to discount simply because we are "outsiders"

That's a conplete failure of logic. We want change without destroying where we live. It's called protesting, voting and shifting the system. Not burning down the businesses of the good people that live here. Change doesn't require burning down our fucking city.

How exactly would you know that?

You think the people in Ferguson have never voted? Have never shifted the system? Have never protested? Where has it got them?

Hokakey you seem to have this blind faith in a system that has continually let people down. In a perfect world,in a perfect system, this could work. It has not, and it won't. If these people decide to try something new I hope you will respect them for this choice.

Nice. Someone else from here that can highlight the reality of what's going on here. No one here wants that shit. And by all means, if you're not from here, and are comsidering coming here to fulfill some college credit for attending a protest, do that shit in your hometown. No one wants you interfering here.

NO ONE HERE WANTS OUR NEIGHBOURHOODS BURNED DOWN. PERIOD.

No, blacks in Ferguson don't vote. It's why white people hold office there. White people who run unopposed.

The white segregationists didn't want those freedom riders interfering in the south either. Lucky for all of us those college kids didn't listen to them back then.

I bet a lot of the white colonists didn't want the British fucking up their neighborhoods either.

Sometimes violence is the only answer. I think some of you are mistaking what some of us have said. I do not wish for riots, I do not wish for violence and more death and or injuries. But sometimes, violence is the only answer. When the system is rigged against you and people keep telling you "well just wait justice will prevail" justice for who? "Trust the system" you mean the system that has shown it gives no fucks about certain segments of the population?

This is a problematic sentence. Are you saying there is NO way Brown people could elect a white person to office?

If they don't vote, which I don't believe at all tbh considering many older brown folks hold voting in high esteem knowing the struggles many did to get that right, then they are also making an even bigger statement about their belief in the system which has failed them looking at pictures of Ferguson.

hokahey

Mesousa is some kind of wack communist radical or something that literally wants violent revolution in the United States. He doesn't give a fuck about your neighborhood.

Yeah! Take out your rage and anger at the system on innocent people, businesses, and property. That will win supporters to your cause in positions of power and will further your campaign in a positive way.

Almost no one here wants violence. Including the Brown family. What's so hard to understand? I got married in Ferguson. I had my wedding reception there. All black owned businesses. And they want nothing more rhan change. But they don't want their life's work and family legacy destroyed. Get it through your heads. No one here wants what you're advocating. Go fuck up your own neighborhoods.

Anyone else think its weird that our govt is all about telling people to be calm, etc, over here about this. This is the same govt that when young people riot in Iran, Russia, etc, our govt is over there giving them money and weapons.

They weren't rioting though. They were holding secret meetings and organizing militias to effectively counter the British. This violence that has already occurred and will probably occur is nothing like the colonial America you're referring to.

And he's comparing it to MLK protests because....hell I don't know. MLK was known for being peaceful.

I need to stay out of this thread. I almost got banned last time for telling people the reality of what's happening here. But to see people advocating the destruction of the businesses of people I care about. I don't believe in karma, but I hope these people experience something one day that makes them regret their extremely naive and dangerous perspective.

Amen.

No brother or sister in here wants violence, but if it brings about the emancipation of their people then what needs to be done will have to be done. As Masasue famously uttered before suicide "Would that I had seven lives to give for my country"

What you believe isn't relevant.

It's your damn police that are "burning" shit down. Using the guns and equipment the military sold to them.

You're worried about property. What about the communities that live in fear not of the rioters, but of the police force that was meant to protect and serve?
