Fifa 13 - uses Wii U friendslist; better pitch and crowd; missing a few features

Long interview, but few useful info: Better graphics they mentioned means better pitch resolution and doubled crowd resolution; and in case there was a doubt, it's online features pulls from the console friend list; also explains how they expect the GamePad features to appeal to more casual players [and blah blah why it's 12.5 and not 13]

"But two things we have improved just in terms of the fidelity and quality are the pitch," he detailed. "If you have a look at the pitch texture there's a lot more detail in it and we're working on that as we speak to hopefully improve it even further."

"One of the common complaints is the crowd, and if you look at the crowd on the Wii U it's double the resolution."

One online feature Prior was eager to point out, though, was the friends tab on the Wii U GamePad's touchscreen. "A friends tab that's always there in the front end on the [Wii U GamePad] so you can tap it, you've got a list of friends," he explained, later adding that it pulls from "the friends list from the Wii U console."

He points out that this not only lets players choose how they want to experience the game, but that it can even bring two players of different skill levels together. "That's one of the good things, right? It's made FIFA almost multi-layered in the sense that how you want to participate with it, you can play as you would 360 and PS3, you can manage, or you can kind of combine the two with a friend and he can do the hard work."

Don't forget the shoes. Just look at all those bumps.

I don't know honestly though, it sounds interesting from this and previous comments, but nothing that really makes me want to get it on Wii U over PS3 where I know I'll have plenty of people playing it online. Still nice to know if I do get it, it'll be a quality game with ease of multiplayer.

Looks quite nice. I haven't bought a FIFA since 09, so i might get this. Nice to have confirmation of a non-stupid friend system (i hope).

They still manage to make the clothes look like part of the body, lol. Maybe we'll see that change in future iterations.

Only thing that I don't get is how the new Gamepad controls are supposed to be targeted to the casual crowd. Really? They look intuitive and useful as fuck for even the most hardcore Fifa player :/

There is a mode where you're only using the touch screen, setting up things etc. You're not controlling the players themself like normal play. That is why it is ment to be aimed at more casual players. For more experienced FIFA players, there is normal play + using the touch screen.

If this weren't based on FIFA12 I would be there day one. It's unacceptable that it won't have the new gameplay features from 13.

From what we know there are more things added than things missing (and 2013 gameplay features are qualified as subtle changes by GamesRevolution, nothing like Fifa 2012>Fifa 2011 changes).

Still ain't buying it. Moneyhats. A Nintendo fansite isn't a reliable source of information for anything.
You are saying Nintendo paid this site to fake an interview. This is... bold.

Nintendo and moneyhats, part 2:
http://www.news10.net/entertainment/gameguys/article/204063/99/EAs-Prior-talks-FIFA-13-and-Wii-U

The release of the Wii U (Nintendo’s next home video game console) looms; as does the list of its launch titles.  Much to the delight of many sports video game fans, EA Sports’ FIFA 13 will be among those titles.  Matt Prior, Line Producer on the game, speculates that the Wii U version will give a gameplay experience superior to that of the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

“It is a superior architect from the Xbox360/PS3,”, Prior said to News10 Game Guy Barry White during the 2012 EA Summer Showcase last week.  “So, we were able to bring some of the brand-new features that are in that this year simply because we’re building a game and, just like when building anything, you have to have a solid foundation on which to build.”

He then pointed out that due to the Wii U’s different technology, FIFA 13 development for the console had to split off of the PS3/360 development.

”[FIFA 13 is] not 12, it’s not 13 — we’re kind of somewhere in-between with the core engine,” he explained.  “Of course obviously on top of that we have the Wii U specific functionality which really enhances the game above that.”

I'm not really interested in FIFA, but nice to hear directly from EA that the Wii U has better graphics than the 360/PS3.

EA guy says his game is great.

Will wait till release. Game doesn't look very pleasing to me in those screens.
Well, sure, but i think he is telling the truth about the improved visuals in some parts of the game.

Speaking of what he said, i wonder how easy it will be to use the touch screen stuff. For it not to break the flow of the gameplay, it would have to be super easy to know where to hit on the touch screen. Otherwise you have to pause the game regardless, and then it wont be much difference than navigating a menu or looking at a touch screen.

I'll wait and see. If the game looks good when it's out I'll appologise to the Nintendo community for doubting their console of choice's graphics card and processor's capabilities.

Is there a reason MLB The Show is miles ahead of every other sport franchise when it comes to crowds?

Watched a vid of it and holy fuck.

FIFA still stuck in the same shitty texture crowd.

Possibly because there's more going on on the field/court in (some) other sports?

Or laziness. Beats me.

Lol, dude what's wrong with you? People are just replying to you with facts that you keep dismissing.

This part of the OP interview is also very interesting:

"Prior continued to explain the importance of the Wii U's GamePad in conjunction with this friend system. "You can tap an invite to them, or you can tap a message to them. Obviously, touch screen messaging is much better than the 360 Live virtual keyboard where you're moving it up and down."
Touch screen messaging is one of the things that explains Wii U's emphasis on social features, and why Nintendo could create Miiverse.

that gameplay picc does not look that good at all... does it look better on my 50" screen or? Since I dont remember it being so murky.

There's no facts on offer here, just opinions. The only opinion that matters in this conversation is mine, and I'm too objective to just trust the words of "EA Employee".

I've said I will re-evaluate my stance upon release. I can't possibly say fairer than that, can I? I'm willing to admit if I'm wrong, because I'm a man.

Unless you arbitrarily believe the EA guy is literally lying, he said the crowd resolution is doubled and the detail on the pitch is improved. Whether that significantly contributes to the game looking better overall is an open question, but those are facts.

I could believe he's lying. He's gotta throw something out there to reassure people. The claims he's made are so insignificant that nobody would be able to tell if he's lying. Think about it. It all adds up.

I hope the improved grass and crowds find their way into the PC version as well.

Kinda sad that it actually takes a new console for them to think of making use of extra power to improve the product when they could have done so on the PC for a couple years now instead of just porting the PS360 version over (which, in turn, also took them a couple years).

oh well

Nice to have confirmation of a non-stupid friend system (i hope).

Well, if this is anything to go by, it seems to be implemented on a per-game basis. Which isn't a disaster, but it is only an Xbox 1 level of functionality. I was really hoping there'd be a standard OS-level interface that you can access at any time like the 360 guide button. Perhaps Nintendo will patch it in at a later date, PS3 style, but I can't help but think that would be making life unnecessarily difficult for themselves.
