They are all pretty different. I think PIE was more like an oldschool "clan" type thing of some New York friends.
The minimal amount of support from a "real" sponsor is to get your players to events I would say, everything else depends on their status.

The teams get exposure and they have ad-deals. There's a lot of money in it because young men are one of the most important groups in advertising and esports mostly has a young male audience.

edit: Not sure why people tend to call teams sponsors in the FGC anyway. That sounds like a charity.
There was someone (mighta been Chen) who actively called out tags like PIE as being bad for up and coming pros because they made you look sponsored when you weren't.

Any recommendations on a good PS4 fightpad? Haven't played too many fighting games over recent years, but thinking of getting back into things for Guilty Gear/DBZ.

Bandai Namco is serious about this, maybe this would teach ASW how to push their games... Lol it wont!

Also, I'm more looking forward to EVO as the fighting games E3 this year than I'm for watching competitive play! :D
Didn't asw release free demos to have the latest versions of their game for tourneys asap

Asw deserves shit talk but not here

^ Are they using lowest settings on PC or something? I never seen SFV look this bad. It's charming in a way.

Final numbers-

This actually seems pretty good.

If I remember correctly, the total of those 9 games don't match just SFV, Smash Melee, and Smash 4 from last year. That's to be expected though considering last year was a weird one.

Total number of uniques might be a better metric.

The only number that looks good is Tekken 7. Outside of that it's a pretty severe drop. SFV was at least expected, but I didn't think Smasher's would abandon EVO in such huge droves. Overall it's not good, but at least it's not horrible. That's the best way I can describe it. Hopefully EVO can bounce back and start growing again next year.

International travel is likely down this year. (see: KOF) Not sure how much that impacts the top games but it's a factor.

The proportions were mostly the same from before except the T7 numbers, those were way off.

The Smash numbers going down are the bigger story here I feel. Like we kinda know why SFV is done that much, that was to be expected but why are Smash numbers that down?

Based on the numbers of Marvel 3 in the last few years, it could've gone on another couple of years and still be higher than the lowest games at EVO this year and last. Only a 17% drop is impressive. But it's good that this is its last E3, go out when there are still more than 500 people entering EVO and transition into the new game.

The increase in price is likely to blame. People will spend 30 on the chance that they might go but it's very unlikely they'd spend 75 unless they were certain. No shows likely really pumped the numbers up.

Melee community is pissed they aren't a Sunday game. Smash 4 community is pissed at how shitty last year was for them.

Wiz lowered the reg to $30 last year to help entice people to pay for Sunday arena's tickets. This year, both Sunday price increased, and registration increased. Lethal combination. If you're doing a price increase, you need to message that and EVO didn't. Just being the biggest name is town wasn't cutting it.

Anecdotally for Smash 4 at least, because of last year's organization and because people would just rather go to another more Smash focused event.

I can buy these explanations.

SFV with the biggest drop-off and Tekken 7 the biggest jump, SOOOOO FUCKIN' GOOD~

Likitung~~~

Uhh...that's like celebrating not getting perfected by a better player lol. SF5 is in its second year. Tekken officially is in it's first year...and still got fewer than half the entrants of a year old game everyone supposedly hates.

2017 EVO SF5 is still larger than any other SF game ever and any non-Smash game ever (only Smash 4 2016 beats it).

And, the "drop off" only looks large because of the super inflated 2016.

It's not really much of a drop off when you look at the big picture: https://twitter.com/SRKRanking/status/881052485649141761

Take out the obvious outlier year, and it's actually within the expected range of year over year growth.

Melee getting less than 2k is very sad. Was expecting Mango to three peat against 2k+.
Like it actually matters if he is playing against 4k versus a hundred. Only the top 0.01% of players can even scratch a player like him, most of those other folks are just donating to his pots and the other "gods".
