I think a lot of people enjoy Persona 3 because of the dreary imagery. Green full moon and you're running around these creepy dungeons with red splatters everywhere. A bright eyed kid waving around a spear kind of takes away from that. And not in the hilarious way the dog does.
Also aesthetically, he's pretty unremarkable looking. If characters from that game were announced in a set I doubt people would care. But standalone, he looks like an NPC.
