Fighting Games Weekly | July 14-20 | Bracket Resets Full of Tears (of Joy?)

For all the burst damage a lot of the characters can do in SF4, it was a game of footies, pokes and a death of a thousand cuts at top 8.

Of course, I missed most of marvel since I went out to eat with the family. I got my arm pinched because I was loading twitch during dinner. I am so happy JWong won but felt like ChrisG or FChamp could have won. It just wasn't their night. I love you Storm. I REALLY wanted clockw0rk to make top 8 but RayRay played very well.

Blaz Blue top 8 was amazing. Q wins but I still don't like all the anime that goes with it. Dacidbro did a great job explaining all the mechanics and character specific meters/gauges very well.

KI was okay. CDJR was dominant and was able to control everyone. It didn't make me want to get into the game.

Missed KOF, missed TTT2, Got some of Smash but missed the Finals and GFs.

People can't entertain if they aren't high level players.

There were probably competitors that ran weird ass strats or played as garbage characters, but if they aren't good at the game they won't get the chance to entertain. Fchamp is probably the most entertaining personality, the fact that he loves to be hated is refreshing, versus being whiny about the hate he receives.

Isn't it what Ultimate is?

Ultimate is old now, going on three years old.

Street Fighter 4 has had four different versions, whereas Marvel 3 has had two.

Who are lucina and robin?

Two characters from Fire Emblem Awakening. Lucina is Chrom's future daughter. Her appearance varies depending on who's her mom. Robin is the player avatar. You pick their gender and you choose their name but Robin is the default name.

I personally hope Lucina is not just a marth clone. Otherwise I'm excited I guess especially for Falcon

Remember, if anybody liked BB finals and wants to know more about how the game works, it's really not hard and there are enough of us to help out. Everything came up good for anime this year.

i legit think that most of the people who said ultra top 8 was boring are bandwagon snake eyez fans who just want to chant USA USA USA when he wins.

I thought Lucina's appearance was static.

I've used rather loose terms, but I meant the idea of fighting game tournaments as skill tests versus broadcasted entertainment.
I understand that much, but what is the end goal? Importance can only be assigned to something if we know it's effect on a goal or idea that is valued. Or are you asking folks whether we, individually, value one over the other?

People don't like watching mirror matches.
Ah yeah, those do suck.

Whenever I read an EVO thread, this question pops in my head: "What's more important during a fighting game stream: the level/depth of play or the entertainment value?"
It's obviously level/depth of play. The higher the level of play the more people are interested and the higher the stakes. You can argue there is entertainment in that but I am completely not interested in watching two beginners play fighting games no matter how "entertaining" their personalities are on stream.

For me the best matches in Marvel 3 top 8 were the top 3 matches because the level of play was the highest out of all the top 8 as were the stakes. There is no "entertainment" from watching FChamp..vs ChrisG play for a casual watcher of fighting games but as a person who appreciates high level play that set was amazing. I was completely captivated.

That was probably my favorite match in the Marvel top 8.

They both have insane footsies/keep-away games, along with using insanely powerful chip characters (morrigan vs. dorma), Fchamp and Chris G probably have the best chemistry when it comes to a skillful fight.

It's an open-ended question, I don't really care how people take it as long as they actually think about it. When people complain about an incredibly skillful match being boring while watching a stream I wonder if they are self-aware to that point. Btw, I found "both" to be an annoying answer, because it is a cop-out and also doesn't even make sense (how can two things both be more than the other?).

I didn't like the complaining about timer scams.

Joking about it is whatever. But matches that come down to 5 seconds and both players have similar amounts to health is intense. It feels like time either speeds up or slows down, the round or match being determined by one attack is unmatched when it comes to stakes.

Yet people will act as if that's somehow more boring than a normal end to a match.

Still can't find a character I like playing in that game. I guess I'm not that interested in it but I do like watching it.

In no particular order:

- I think the BB finals were the most hype for me, in no small part due to Dora's play (and cosplay) and Dacidbro's commentary. Now I'm thinking of getting the Vita version.

- A shame that SG got bodied on stream time, but I enjoyed top 4. Cerebella best grappler in all of fighting games.

- With my tastes moving away from Capcom games for whatever reason, I didn't watch a ton of SF and ended up missing the finals for Marvel and Ultra. I know who won, but if there's a cliff notes version of what went down, I'd love it. (Is ChrisG the Buffalo Bills/Minnesota Vikings of Marvel (so many Super Bowls, no victories)?)

- Seeing stuff on twitter about how the fact a pad user won means that fightstick makers were "exposed". Sad. Choosing to play with a fightstick is about wanting that experience, IMO, not wanting a competitive edge.

- I thought it was cool that Nintendo showed Smash fans the love again with a Reggie intro. Yes, it's all business, but still cool.

- I didn't get to post much but checked the threads when I could, and enjoyed reading what you guys had to say.

- with the announcement of a new SF in development, put the final nail in Darkstalkers, but honestly that's probably okay with me. A few of GundamGAF got together to play Night Warriors for a few hours on Saturday (damn you SousedLouse and your stupid beam robot), and I just don't think modern Capcom would do it justice.

- Thread title should have been about Dahbomb making bank on bets.
When did this happen?

http://rank.shoryuken.com/ has been updated with Evo results.

Some changes on the Marvel side:

- ChrisG is still ranked #1, but Justin (#2) continues to close the gap between them, which has been shrinking since last year. The points gap between Justin and Flocker (#3) is more than double the gap between ChrisG and Justin.
- RayRay's (#6) score is much higher than any other non-god player, and the gap between him and PR Rog (#5) has shrunk considerably.
- Neo has moved up to #7, passing Yipes.
- KBR moved up to #11, passing Dieminion and Nemo.
- Insaynne and Jan have rocketed up to #22 and #23.
- Other big gains: Marn (#29), Full Schedule (#42), Scrubeks (#43), Busby #(50), PZPoy (#66), GCYoshi (#70)

Ultimate is old now, going on three years old.

Street Fighter 4 has had four different versions, whereas Marvel 3 has had two.
But they released Ultimate right before they lost the right to publish more Marvel games.
They already did their "last patch just before it's over".

Ghandi was plenty entertaining!

And that one Marvel player during pools at one of the past EVOs. The one who was just playing with absolute disregard to everything actually happening on screen.
Seconding this.

New or less experienced players playing in an unorthodox or unexpected fashion is also entertaining. They create a spectacle purely by being a disruptive element in a relatively ordered and structured environment.

That might be so, but the contract for Capcom to use the Marvel license to begin with was still viable until last year. Hell, some people at Capcom said they might consider working on a patch, around early/mid 2013.

When did this happen?

Did not see this live. Here's Siliconera's blurb. For those who watched him speak, is this accurate?

Capcom Deputy Head of Consumer Games Development Yoshinori Ono gave a tiny speech before the Ultra Street Fighter IV finals at the EVO 2014 championships today.

Ono jokingly apologized for Street Fighter still being at “Ultra” while the Tekken series is currently at number 7. He went on to say that Capcom are planning the advancement of the Street Fighter series, and asked the crowd for their patience.

Capcom will be announcing something “soon,” Ono said, although he didn’t specify just when this would be.

The headline for this was "in development," and this morning the article I saw turns out to have been a second hand report based on Siliconera's article that ran with the headline rather than the more murky details of Ono's "planning stages" and such.

shun's blood alcohol level is as raw as super meter gets!

Straight up, you can bet that if a character has to get drunk mid match or has a BAC resource they are a threat. It might sound like a joke but developers like to make being drunk a significant buff. I personally like seeing stuff like that because it gives the player a way to directly make themselves stronger while weighing risk and reward, since the opponent will try to stop them from doing so. Thankfully, characters like Shun or Chin don't vomit like Frank West after ingesting so much stuff, that dude must have spiked his OJ.

High level play can be entertaining. That's why people are rightfully confused by your so called "open ended" question. This is not a situation where someone needs to make a choice.

If you had phrased the question "which is better.... the Ghandi match or Tokido vs Xiao Hai KOF?" then you might get the right answer.

snake eyes should be very proud of his performance.

He gave louffy the most trouble and came down to almost pixel difference . He is truly the premier zangief player, and the most dangerous US player in the west coast.

there's a reason whenever there's a west vs east match the one constant in everyone's mind is "watch out for snake eyez"

yea it comes down to a bunch of different things as well. Are the commentators good/enjoyable, do you like the game, etc.

Like the tokida/xiaohai grandfinals were great but I actually almost fell asleep b/c of the commentators

Imma grind out Terumi since on paper he should agree with me but it's disheartening to see that people think he sucks n stuff. Tsubaki as well.

General consensus is Terumi is mid tier I thought. Not great not terrible. Tsubaki is eh, she has MU issues but it's not 1.0 levels of despair.

Thanks for not using spoilers in the thread title, Enzo.

So much stupid drama over thread titles, though. If I was Enzo I'd just stop using unique titles, but he probably has a lot more patience for this stuff than I do.

I wish I could've seen the stream live since it was nowhere near as hype watching after the fact, but it's really cool to see Louffy win Evo and Justin win Marvel.

How were Injustice finals?

Well at the NLBC vs WNF thing Snakes Eyez was the only WNF player to lose so even the other WNF players are pretty damn good.

Injustice finals were pretty good IMO. Only thing I didn't like was that GF was such a one sided mauling.

Well the player who came in 3rd and was the most hype out of all the top 8 at evo this year was playing a low tier character.

P.S. Awakening is one of the weakest titles in the series and we are worse off by any extension to its legacy.
Word, reclassing is super broken and the map design in Awakening is abysmal.
... However, it did sell well and raise awareness for the series.

I just hope the next game has more strategically designed maps. And hopefully they heavily restrict or remove reclassing. I think branching promotions from FE8 provide a good balance for allowing some choice without being as ridiculous as reclassing.

I hope we hear something from Capcom about a new fighting game soon. Otherwise they should rename the capcom pro tour to the street fighter pro tour. :P

Capcom is probably kicking themselves in the head for not developing some sort of patch or content update for Marvel before the contract expiring. All of the character balancing/changes alone make Ultra feel like something extremely new.
The dream is dead! ;_;

What you think about Noel? I like her too but I see people getting shamed for playing her all the time lol

Noel is decent too. She gets shamed a lot because of how easy she is to play and go pants on head retarded with at a mid level. Even at a high level sometimes you can just do something dumb that makes no sense, and she'll get away with it because drives. Obviously good players get around this and she can get blown up, but it's just frustrating to deal with until you learn how to.

The problem is not a lot of people actually learn how to deal with it and whine instead :v

I quit BBCP cause I had issues getting Mu's BnBs down; maybe I should pick it up again

Also I feel it in my bones that the next Fire Emblem game is going to be a remake of Crusader Chronicles, feel free to quote this post when it gets announced
