Fighting Games Weekly | July 22-28 | Life's A Beech

Yea, I shouldn't have read that. He doesn't understand that people can't just switch characters all willy nilly. Why don't we have an all-random bracket? Why not, guys? (sarcasm)
Fighting Games != Magic the Gathering. You can't just pick up another character in a few hours of testing.

I had to re-watch this a few times to understand what happened. It wasn't really a setup, though if it was, it only works on stupid players like this Yukiko who decide to guard cancel Hamaon while he had 0 skulls.

Yeah that's the funny part. Not sure why Narihei decided to guard cancel it. I suppose it's a high/low opportunity since you're stuck in Hamaon for awhile?

For some reason, adding things to my avatar is becoming a pain, guess I don't have any talent in shopping (Gimp-ing?) I wouldn't mind if someone fixed my avatar up or something.

Would like to see mine all beached up, though I never have cared for beaches.

What comes after VxG?

Oh, tomorrow there's an online tournament for Mahvel @ http://www.twitch.tv/Airjuggle

Makes me miss Certain Death over on Gun's stream...

What are you doing

stahp

I swear I want to smack whoever came up with this shit over at ASW. They won't use "XXX" to describe the new GG, but "CP" is an okay acronym by them? >:(
I don't see why they didn't just use "X3" instead of "Xrd" if they were so concerned about using XXX

And hell, it's a series with I-No in it, part of me wonders how much of a stretch XXX would be Kappa
lol

I'd ask in the arcade stick thread, but I think the activity rate is a little higher here. The XTokki360 on eTokki is the super legit PS2->360 converter, right? Anyone stand by this guy?

I picked up some MC Cthulhus for a custom stick and some 360 Fightpads to dual-mod into them, but life is super busy for me. So instead of taking the time and effort to pad hack / dual mod I'm thinking about just using the PSX out from the MC Cthulhu and using the XTokki360 to convert that to my 360. Lazy and a little more expensive, but I don't have to pad hack and the inside of my stick wiring can stay super clean with just the MCC. Wanna make sure that the converter won't bother me though.

OK I understand the setup now. Hamaon does lock you in enough blockstun to allow Naoto to go for a mixup. This Yukiko was so terrified of being opened up that he guard cancelled in anticipation of the mixup and hoped to knock the Naoto away. If the Naoto had gotten hit by the guard cancel, he'd lose a persona card and Hamaon would immediately stop, and Yukiko would survive. So instead the Naoto just allowed him to hang himself.

Ah I see. I thought Hamaon would persist even if Naoto got hit so it didn't make sense to me.

When a persona is out for any reason, you'll lose a card if your character gets hit. Sukuna-Hikona is actively casting Hamaon behind Naoto that whole time, so if Naoto gets touched the super disappears.

I love all the little variables that go into resource management in P4A. Playing it for so long has definitely improved my decision-making skills in FGs overall.

Like I said last night, I bought AE, and I've got no idea what I'm doing. There is no tutorial as far as I can tell. Is that what the challenges are there for? I chose M. Bison to try to mess around with and I couldn't figure out how to do anything. It told me to do a Psycho Crusher with an input next to it but I've got no idea what the pictures mean so I'm clueless. There was a key that I found that said what the pictures mean, but it still didn't make much sense to me as someone who doesn't play fighting games.

Not exactly sure how to go about playing this game. I'm new to fighting games as you can tell. Help would be appreciated!

Kinda offtopic since this thread is all about da beech but ... i found my second character in AE !!! (My main being Yun)
After tryin' Adon, Zangief, Guile, and Makoto(lol) my second character is * drum rolls *
T. MOTHER EFFIN HAWK

For Psycho Crusher, you need to hold back for ~2 seconds, and then push forward + punch.

Capcom needs to make a tutorial system for their next fighting game if they want more casual buying their game instead of dumbing the game down.

Edit: I remember the first time seeing Guile and Gief's super in Super Street Fighter II Turbo and I swear to god it was impossible to pull off.

You'd be better off trying Ryu or another similar character to ease you into the game and give you a better idea of the pace of the game and its mechanics.

Bison is a charge character, meaning you have to hold "back", or the opposite direction of where your character is facing, for 3 seconds and then quickly tilt the stick "forward", or where your character is facing, and simultaneously press any punch button to do a Psycho Crusher.

SF4 and most fighting games do a poor job of teaching you how to play. You could try reading something like http://www.eventhubs.com/guides/2008/jul/08/street-fighter-4-strategy-guide-hints-and-tips/. Even better if you can find somebody online to play some matches with you and talk you through it. I'm sure you'll find somebody in the OT who is close by to help you out.

The challenges will teach you moves for different characters, but they will unfortunately not tell you how or why you would like to do them!

M.Bison and other charge characters (you need to hold down or back for a few seconds to do a move) are probably not the best to begin with. If you pick somebody like Ryu or Ken who have common motions, you might have an easier time.

But, but... I thought people could spend months figuring how to do quarter circle !

They should just drop diagonals like NRS.

don't do this, it makes it so you constantly get d,b/d,f inputs when trying to do crouching attacks

I thought the tutorial for Skullgirls was ok. I only played the demo, but they talk about hit confirms so they must be doing something right I guess?

If you are just starting out, I recommend watching VesperArcade's Street Fighter 4 tutorial series. He covers just about everything a beginner needs to know, from basic stuff to more complex parts of the game.

Also, James Chen made a series of videos called First Attack which are very good. Some of the info might be a redundant to VesperArcade, but he explains things using very understandable examples.

Thanks for all the help everyone. Had no idea about charge characters or anything. I'll try out Ryu in the challenge mode and see if I have an easier time. I'll also look through some of the stuff posted. Thanks again.
