How many people in this thread have never Mained a male character or are way more drawn to females in fgs? How about the opposite? I don't really care what sex the char is myself but I feel like a lot of people stick to one gender ie I think max said he prefers to play male characters.

I don't really have a preference as long as they have a cool move set and look cool given the theme they go for. I have noticed though that the last few games I've played, I've had a female main or co-main.

I've mained more males than females in fighters if we're tallying them all up. Only game where I like the females more is in BB just because I don't care for most of the guys' designs or playstyles.

Doesn't matter if they're male or female to me in a fighter. I just use whoever looks cool or fun.

Used to stick only to dudes when I was a kid. Now I don't mind picking female characters as long as they play well and look cool, though I usually just end up with male mains. I usually like picking the freaks and more often than not they're males.

I almost never pick the agile, pixie type characters in fighting game which are usually females. Always went towards the more balanced/straight forward archetypes which tend to be guys rather than girls. Few exceptions included Ivy and Storm. In Tekken I only ever liked playing as Jun/Asuka. In SF only Rose and Poison interest me but their combos are hard. Even in Skullgirls I picked the most straightforward girl in it which was Parasoul.

I am the type of person who if played Persona would play Mitsuru.

In action games and RPG I almost always pick girls. Better to look at from behind and they take up less of the screen. So I will always pick Sheva in RE5, female versions of DH/Wizard/Monk in D3 and Blaze in Streets of Rage.

Yeah, I'd probably play Mitsuru or Margaret myself.

I only play female characters.

I tend to play characters I feel I can relate to in some way, so they tend to be female but aren't exclusive to that.

<KI> still has quite a few players online, the last time I checked it out about a month ago. Seems like it has all skill levels, may be a little rough if you're brand new but nowhere near as rough as say SF4 or Tekken Tag 2 would be if you were to pick them up now.

I recently got back into TTT2 with new characters (so i started at the bottom of the ladder again), and there's definitely a loooot of newbies on there. Pretty surprising actually. I think T7 hype may have drawn them (back) in, like it did for me.

I generally play female characters only. A lot of male characters look fugly to me, and like 99% are the bulging muscles angry eyebrows type which i despise. I like speedy looking characters too, which tend to be females. Occasionally i see male characters i wouldn't mind playing, usually cool zippy ninja types like Seth in Under Night... but then they often end up not fitting my playstyle at all.

I have a friend who only plays male characters ever.

No female in anime fits my play style at all. Plus I don't wanna hear awful squeals, whining, and other typical anime tropes. DOU DOU DOU SHUT THE FUCK UP

Haha, we're somewhat similar in this regard. It's one of the reasons why I like Marth & Pit so much in Smash on top of folks like Dante & Strider in Marvel.

I used to never play female characters til I started playing ST and found the glories of "walk forward and mash MP" with Chun Li.

I've never looked back

I play characters whose playstyle resonates with me and don't look stupid. I'd say gender-wise, I play roughly equal numbers of both.

I play/pick whos fits my style and i feel comfortable with their moveset, gender doesn't matter.

But i guess looking back at all my mains and how it paned out, they have been mostly male, with only Setsuka in soul calibur 3 and Elena in 3S.

And i was played A3 deejay today. Damn he feels janky to me, haha.

Yeeeaaaaah.

I hope he's in sf5

Character choice for me is probably down the middle. I need to like the design and playstyle in order to stick with a character.

In GGXrd that's Ky, and to a lesser extent Ram. There's not really anyone else I'm interested in learning (besides Jack-O' and I might try out Johnny but probably won't stick with him).

You guys have no idea how bad I want to play Jack O lol

Same here.

Can't wait to see what her IK looks like.

The loketest didn't have her voice implemented so we still don't know what that sounds like either.

And then there's also Johnny.

No, the last straw was realizing that the game was no longer fun for me, regardless of character. Win or lose, I get no joy from it anymore.

I'm serious, I don't play anymore. I'm open to giving advice, though.

Correct attitude <3

No preference at all. I just play what is strong and feels good to play.

The fact that she wears a mask during the fight is cool but I regret they showed her face in intro/arts to be honest. It breaks the creepy/mysterious aspect of the character just to satisfy otakus and their waifu syndrome. :(

How I choose a main:

1) Learn every character
2) Play the character that I feel has a balance of fun and effectiveness

Sometimes I am aesthetically drawn to a character like I was with King and Abel. But I absolutely won't main a character that isn't fun, so those two were happy accidents, honestly.

Anime was a mistake.

Five minutes in and this Aris Excellent Adventures is already pretty great. "This was a stranger!?"

On topic with character choice I generally pick the medium to faster/agile characters, which winds up being females a lot of the time, which actually got me some shit from friends in high school.

Except everything else about the character is also cute, saccharine, comical. So actually the mask itself is the thing that stands out as odd, well that and the ball and chain.

As for picking a character to play, pick the one that you find fun to play which looks usually don't have a lot to do with.

That's essentially why I wish she kept the mask: to feel odd. The new GG chars are way too obvious in their design, they don't give much space for interpretation.

I can't really say I've let gender be a strong deciding factor in characters I like to futz around with *shrug*

I feel its a bit disingenuous to say "this character is cute and/or has a happy disposition - she most be otaku bait!". Granted we still don't know that much about Jack-O but that feels a bit reductionist.

I'm surprised you said that about Abel. Most say he's boring design-wise.

It's not just that. The ass-shots and crouch stance also point to that.

But we weren't talking about butt shots - or at least it wasn't obvious to me. If butt shots are the criteria for "otaku bait" then that's like a REALLY wide brush we are painting with. You're going to hit a wide range of personalities and art styles to say nothing of a lot of clearly non-Japanese media too. Though in general I'm becoming increasingly annoyed at how words like "otaku-bait" and "pandering" obfuscate conversations because all it really means is "thing I don't like". Like saying she was a missed opportunity to play into some grim horror tropes or you don't need her butt in your face are both valid points/critiques. However there was no way I could know you meant butt shots by "otaku bait" unless I'm you or can read your mind through the internet :p

Welcome to asw.

That's not fair, ASW is willing to pander to anyone and everyone at all times. Just look at the other character they are adding in this version.

That's not true at all. I like it and I think it's pandering because I like it for entirely superficial reasons. But that's what fighting game character designs are. Kind of very simple, obvious, archetypes because you have all of a few seconds to convey the characters personality.

I'm speaking of the context of when people complain "XYZ is pandering!". Technically, pretty much everything that is not some crucial gameplay element in a game is "pandering" as far as I see it. Its just people only complain when a specific element made to appeal to a specific group of people runs contrary to their personal tastes. Which in itself isn't a problem. However, when people don't elaborate and leave the level of discourse at that level (or "bait" or "anime" or whatever), it become really hard to understand what they actually mean and what they are actually critiquing since such terms are SO broad. Occasionally its obvious but many many times (i.e. right now) its not. All I'm asking for is clarity in discussion :p

Breh... that character is otaku bait.

Cool mechanics/playstyle... but definitely otaku bait.

If you need to be explained how it's an otaku bait then either you need to watch more anime or you are probably an otaku yourself.
