Fighting Games Weekly | June 1-7 | QAisTopTier

How many people in this thread have never Mained a male character or are way more drawn to females in fgs? How about the opposite? I don't really care what sex the char is myself but I feel like a lot of people stick to one gender ie I think max said he prefers to play male characters.

I have no preference, but I'm usually drawn to female fighters more than male because I like aerial characters more and I just generally like their designs in games more than the males.

I'm shameless enough to admit that I tend to play female characters in fighting games, and it's at least partially due to aesthetics/design. It's not exclusive, though -- the two games I've played the most over the years (SSBM and Melty Blood, in its various iterations) I played male characters in, so who knows.

Jack O's pretty baity, but at least she's no Platinum.
I don't think Platinum is that bad outside of her design being obvious tropey at points (although at least some of them get subverted). Now if you're talking about some of the promotional material they make with her... yikes.

That's basically why I'm not that fan of Xrd new characters and how they turned some old characters. But I'm still waiting for Revelator as the game seems to improve a lot on the gameplay and systems... And I want to try her anyway. :)
Ok then what about Bedman? What easily identifiable tropes and archetypes does he fall into?

I think it's rare to find people who make it a hard rule. I've only met one person who has never mained a female character, and I don't think I know anyone who would never main a male character.

It seems like the opposite to me. I know many players who absolutely will not play a woman, saying stuff like it's lame or they can't relate to them. On the other hand most that I know that play female characters stick to only girls and are waifu weirdos like me.

Smash players are accusing each other of taking adderall.

They do not want to open that can of worms, but are doing it anyway.

and yeah I tend to play female characters, at least initially, in fighting games because their designs tend to appeal to me. Gameplay wise I like characters that feel good to control and are well rounded. Female characters, at least in capcom games, seldom fit both of those criteria for me so I just play Shotos and dudes that dive kick.

I only play female characters where I like the design, and it's not too fan servicey (like a lot of anime girl designs/ no school girls either that shits dumb). Has to be reserved enough.. Other than that I mostly just pick characters I find the best designed aesthically and play style wise. So my sm4sh mains being all female is kind of a rarity...

I honestly wouldn't be surprised because it's easy as hell to get. I knew a guy in college who sold Adderall pills to people in the dorm hall and if he needed more he can just ask his psychiatrist or whoever and they would just write him up the prescription. Since a lot of smash players and fgc in general is college age and above, it's pretty accessible. You would think they would make it harder to get written up for one. And these people didn't even have really devastating ADHD (I have a cousin who had it real bad as a child), these people just said they had a hard time studying and it was prescribed to them, they seemed like perfectly normal college kids.

I play whoever appeals to me, but most of the time not female chars bc they're usually weirdos or bait. But if they have a fun playstyle then it doesn't matter, i.e., Platinum was who I would play when I tried out BBCP

Usually it's just a combination of I think they look cool and/or I like their moveset/playstyle for me. Gender doesn't really matter to me, but I think most of my mains have been female.

Yeah gender never mattered to me in fighters or any other game, all that matters is if the character is fun to use and fits my style of play.

I have met some people that absolutely refuse to use women in games though. I can't make sense of those people....

Sorry but I really want to point out an error. Lucas is going to be released two days before Nintendo Direct Day.

Lucas' release date - June 14
Nintendo Direct Day - June 16.

Oh dang, my bad! You're totally right. I still think the timing being so close to each other is somewhat deliberate, though.

There's different types of adhd. Some people can't sit still and others can't mentally focus on a single thing for more than a few minutes.

I really like the idea of the character to be honest but was disappointed by the look they gave him. Way too much useless details (like why give an english Crown to th head of the bed? Spikes ? Giant purple arrow on the air?) Ishiwatari said in an interview that he was sketching and that it came to him and that's probably why the character is the more original among the other new characters.

thought this was kinda funny. video game website says "please help us we have no idea what questions to ask about fighting games". comments clearly dont either.

do a lot of major vg sites have people that know about dota or lol or cs or some shit? cuz it seems like a lot of the stuff i read about fighting games on big sites (if there is any) isnt super insightful
I think how it generally works in publications is that it's pretty informal how this stuff works.

Most places have a few guys that are into each kind of game, and either the most knowledgeable do the coverage or they contract out to people who can which also helps save costs (like 1up hiring haunts for a review, Gamespot hiring Gootecks to cover EVO, etc.). Sometimes journalists request not to review games in genres they like because they don't want to soil their experience via the intense review process. This seems kind of odd because y'know, this is your job and certainly has a ton of benefits if it's your hobby, but it happens. At least this is what I learned from the 1up era and see a bit of at Giantbomb and stuff.

Doesn't Destructoid lean towards PC gaming anyways? It's kind of innocuous to ask what people want to hear, but then again I'm not really surprised that segment really has no footing on fighting games since PC isn't really the optimal platform for the genre.

Giant Bomb doesn't really do reviews anymore, but Jeff recently talked about on a podcast about how in his GS days they used to hire freelance journalists to write reviews for older games like Chrono Cross (which is how it got a 10). Its definitely not uncommon, especially when you don't have the manpower for reviews on 50 hour games. But usually when GB does reviews, its usually the people who like that genre of games that do the reviews (Brad for open world, Jeff for FPS, etc.)

But before NeoGAF, I used to go to destructoid for a lot of my news and they did cover a lot of Japanese/non-PC games. Not sure how much that's changed in the last few years.

Mostly male characters till I got to a certain age where I would main either. Or mostly female characters.

I will admit my reasons for character selection are pretty picky so in some cases I just can't find a character orz. Xrd is one of those games atm.

In the case of GiantBomb they have quite a few of their guys that are, on average, slightly more in tune with fighting games than other journalists. They'll also do a video feature on pretty much any fighting game release that comes out big or small, whereas other outlets would probably skip Xrd or Divekick altogether.

That's mainly because of Jeff and his love for retro games. I guess fighting game didn't change enough over time so he still likes whatever he did about them back then.

Most of them are clueless about those games too

They don't really fit into the typical journalist's routine since they're so time-consuming, and if people want information on those games they don't go to general gaming sites.
