Too bad sp00ky doesn't realize that it ain't that simple.

c'mon man, he dropped everything and cashed in a 401k iirc to do what he's doing. He knows it's tough, but at the same time, he doesn't want to see people complaining that nothing is happening, if nobody is making any sacrifices to make it happen.

Summary:

Slasher and DjWheat: So what are you trying to say Chris, you just want more money and for things to be bigger?

Chris: No, that isn't what I'm saying.

Slasher and DjWheat: So what are you saying?

Chris: There isn't enough money in the FGC and the tournaments are not big enough.

And repeat.

"Capcom, please spend money to fix this" is pretty preposterous, yet it's the first thing that "esports" people consider.

Somehow after Riot basically fully subsidizes a competitive community every other community feels like it's what they deserve. Starcraft made enough of a stink for Blizzard do put together some botch job of a world series, but atleast Valve sees how stupid it all is. This isn't going to be how competitive gaming becomes a viable industry and career.

It's admirable that he's sacrificed a lot to get to the point he is now but it's naive to think it everything is riding simply on one person or a few people putting the effort and time into promoting it. There are numerous examples of folks that sacrifice time and money to try and get a community going in the FGC alone that shows that to be the case. It takes a lot more. I mean, I certainly understand wanting folks to be proactive and continue to do as much as they can to promote their community but be realistic, it ain't simple.

And I speak as a person who's watched and helped grow a massive community, this one. It took a lot more than just the staff and the forum members to get NeoGAF as big as it is now. It'll take a lot more than just a guy stepping up and promoting the community of X game to get them healthy.

Right, the interest needs to be there as well, or at least people who already partially into it, who can follow other people who step it up, whether it's 1 or 20 other guys.

The fundamental problem being that Capcom is not making LoL money. Or that LoL probably made more than all of Capcom's games combined in the last year or more.

I feel like the fact that fighting games are smaller is a very basic roadblock to esports money. There are other cultural things that I feel rightfully get in the way of a full sellout...but first thing's first, lack of money and popularity. The popularity cannot be fixed by people being more mature either. It's that fighting games are complex and have a lot of weird stuff going on that people don't want to learn. If you don't have the pre-requisite knowledge, it's two guys beating each other up to make health bars go down.

Match up fighter 4
Chrisg is getting bored
Not sure if he's going to Evo because it's pointless.

There's a point to going to Evo: so he can win his first Evo. :p he's talking like he's already won.
