Didn't they put most of that stuff back into TTT2? So what were the complaints for TTT2 then?

Tekken has always sold well in the US, at least for the previous generation. Tekken was the highest selling fighting franchise for a really long time (not including Smash).

T6 sold very well, its now at 3.6 million worldwide. TTT2 on the other hand has probably the worst singleplayer content of any tekken. They really focused on improving the training mode and the online with TTT2, and the sales suffered because of it. The wiiu version is the only version with decent singleplayer, but who cares about wii u fighting games.

I don't get the game being "too hard"... I mean that didn't stop Tekken 5, Tekken 6 etc.

That was a different time when there weren't very many good, easier options. Back in the day noone complained about Quake being too hard. Now take someone who grew up on CoD and tell them to play Quake Live. They'd probably give up pretty fast.

Having both Mike Ross and Art on stream is a recipe for success. I forgot how long ago it was but I remember this stream that was on at like 6am and it had Art, Mike and a few others just talking about random shit. I'll see if I can find an archive of it.

This is too true.

I gave T6 and TT2 and honest shot. They are hard as shit for me personally. It just isn't for me. Way too many strings, the movement is stiff and blocking lows that come out so damn fast is something I can't see me ever getting the hang of unless I only play Tekken, and Tekken only.

I'm in the process of learning some TTT 2, I'm still ass but I'm having fun with it. Still finding the characters I enjoy playing as. Really like Steve a lot.

I think Tekken has a reputation for being hard because so much game knowledge carries over between entries in the series, so new players have to catch up to a decade's worth of experience. It's a more aggravated version of the notoriety the fighting genre has for intimidating skill curves--when the games themselves might not necessarily be that complicated mechanically--just by virtue of veteran players having so much experience with similar games.

I wonder how much benefit a rigorous skill-matching algorithm for online play like Starcraft has with their ladder would have for new players. It bred a whole class of uberscrubs for that game but it does make "competition" more palpable for more people, I suppose.

It was after one of the King of GGPO stream and it had Art, Mike Ross, Floe and some other OG fighting game players just talking.

Tekken 6 had 43 characters IIRC, TTT2 has 59. And it has a tag team which means you need to put in 2X the effort to learn your own characters, while your opponent has 2 characters and the amount of matchup knowledge you need per match goes up 4X. Basically the problem with TTT2 isn't so much that it's too hard, the game has become too bloated and just wondering about what characters to use is enough to scare people from learning the game. People complain about the direction SCV went with the new cast and the smaller movelist, and also the inclusion of hypers, but those changes made SCV more accessible than the other 3D fighting games.

And Soul Calibur V was by the most successful Japanese fighter released after Marvel vs Capcom 3 (in sales and tournament numbers).

Those games came out in times when there were fewer alternatives. It's a lot easier to say no to a hard game when you have an easier game that you're enjoying.

THe issue with SCV wasn't so much the dumping of chars, it's that they dumped the wrong characters.

I completely agree. I play every game, and I learn something new that I can apply to any game I play. I respect game specialists, but I'm not a fan of people who shit on any game but the game they play.

Truth. After I started playing Tekken my SF footsies got soo much better.

And it was the second red headed step child after Mahvel.

Dumping Talim, Seung Mina and changing Kilik into one of those copy characters while keeping Ivy on the roster... lol.

The characters that matter either are still in SCV or have their fighting style still in the game. Talim hasn't been popular since SC2 when she was stupid good. Seong Mi-na has been an after thought ever since Kilik was introduced. Ivy is a popular character and why she's still in the game.
