Week of November 17th to 23rd, 2014.

Fighting Games Weekly is the weekly discussion thread for all things fighting games. News, events, streams, videos, players, drama, everything fighting game related.

Don't know what to watch right now? Check the FGCPros Twitch Group or Jaxel's Stream Viewer. If you want to watch multiple streams at once, you can use Jaxel's customizable multiviewer as well.

New to FGC-GAF is the FGC-GAF Index which lists the fighting games GAFers plays as a neat reference with some rough statistics to boot. To add yourself to the index, quote this post and use the survey link below. Please remember to save/bookmark the "Edit your response" link so you can edit your responses if/when you buy a game already on the list or a new game that releases in the future.

Last week's thread. An archive of previous FGW threads is available here.

Every week, FGW will spotlight one GAFer to get a better picture of their history with fighting games, their preferences, and much more. For this week's FGW Player Spotlight, we will be taking a closer look at the irfaanator!

What fighting games do you currently play, what is your all time favourite and why?
Right now I haven't been play very much since I've been working on my thesis/defense that will end this week.

I was playing sf4, p4u, and uniel. Since, I'm a 010er, I don't have an all time fav, but I've been playing sf4 for the longest I guess.
What are your favorite mechanics from the current selection of fighting games and why? What are your least favorite and why?
Favorite mechanic for me would be the burst mechanic in arksys games. I like the idea of having something to get people off of you/extend combos. Being able to reset a situation is nice for those rushdown heavy games.

Least favorite would be ultras in SF4. It may actually the ability for some characters to easily combo into them, such as Rufus, rather than the risk/reward. Requiring something in return such as super meter (FADC) is fine for me since you have to weight the option of spending the bar or not.
What got you into fighting games? Are there any other genre of games you play?
What got me into fighting games were my friends during my undergrad. I always had an interest in fighting games when I was younger (a family friend that lived with us while he was doing his medical residency would take me to the AMC close by and play the Tekken Tag machine they had). IIRC, marvel 3 was coming out at the time and I didn't really know much about the mvc scene/fgc outside of #37, and he told me to watch WCW3 with the clockwork vs neo money match. When I watched that match, I was instantly hooked.

I play other games as well, but as of right now FFXIV has taken up much of the time, but I do like shooters, rpgs, and DOTA. Overall, I am a big fan of games that have a competitive scene, which is what really draws me to fighting games.
What is your favorite fighting game character and why?
I would have to say Rose, since that is who I've played the most in SF4. I really like her all around playstyle, since its kind of how I see myself. Not too strong in offense/defense at least in AE when I started playing her.
Describe your style of play, and how do you play (local, online, etc.).
Playstyle would be all around I guess. I'm not the best on offense/rushing in, but I'm not the best on defense. I like to be more on the defensive side, which is why I loved Baiken in GG, but I like pressing buttons for some reason. I play mainly offline since I live in the Midwest so I don't have good connections with other ppl, and I don't have the mindset to play offline. I rage a lot when I play online.
What do you feel are your biggest strengths and weaknesses as a player?
Biggest strength would have to be my willingness to learn. I'm pretty ass since I don't get much time to play right now, but I have no qualms on losing a bunch to learn what I need to be doing. Biggest weakness would pressing buttons. I always press buttons at the wrong time since I always think something has more priority/will working when I know it doesnt.
Best and worst moments in the your fighting game career?
Best moment would be earlier in the year when I went 3-2 in Cleveland tourney I went to. I shouldve done better, but I lost to match-up inexperience.

Worst moment would be when I went 0-2 in all the games at UFGT since I was super busy and couldn't practice. Felt bad since I spent all that money to just do terrible.
What do you want from future fighting games?
I would like to have an extensive training/tutorial mode that games like skullgirls have. Really anything that can draw more people into these games so companies still keep on making them.
Who should be on next week's GAF Player Spotlight?
Next week should be casperone if he hasn't done one. Hard to tell who hasn't done one with so many done. If he can't I don't think holy order sol has done one yet.
Since Dahbomb strongly encourages pre-orders, what games do you plan to buy that have been officially announced?
Hmm, I guess Xrd, but the only other game I am interested in is DA:Inquisition so I guess that one if it's good.

On GAF we have various members that stream fighting games from time to time too. If you would like to add your channel to this thread, send me a PM.

Often, some fighting games can seem intimidating to players new and old. Below are a bunch of resources that may be of aid to new players, or handy as references.
  • Learn How To Play Fighting Games Free eBook from Shoryuken is a fantastic primer for new players to the genre.
  • Footsies Handbook is a guide to the potentially elusive, but integral part of doing well in any fighting game.
  • NeoGAF's Arcade Stick Thread is the place to go for questions about anything arcade stick-related.
  • Step Up Your Game is an editorial series by Justin Wong that covers a multitude of topics, notably focusing on strengthening your mental game and playing smarter instead of harder.
  • Tips for first time competitors will help you straighten out those nerves and expectations when you head out to your first tournament.
  • Domination 101 is almost a cult classic article in the FGC, which has Seth Killian telling us how he really feels about the idea of "cheapness" in fighting games.
  • Team-building Guide by our very own Karsticles, which helps make it easier to approach team-building in MvC games, and games with similar synergistic elements.
For a list of NeoGAF OTs for specific fighting games, as well as a list of non-GAF fighting game communities that may be of interest, check out the FGW Archive where these resources can be found on separate sheets at the bottom.

Nice touch on the banner, Enzo.

enzo you're not going to change the info on WNF, TRB and smash sundays? we know the new names.
I thought the new names were temporary names. Wit Bizzack and all that nonsense.

Been meaning to ask this, can someone clarify what's changed and who has ownership of what now? Are those just SuperDojo weeklies now?

all the weeklies will now take place at twitch.tv/superdojo. smash sunday is now called super smash weekends and it seems more official than the other two. at least put the superdojo link in the op so other people who don't know what happened can tune in.

im starting to question wizards position as running evo, if he tries to make it esports then its all gone. we gotta keep our character and not forget our humble beginnings and those who were with us from the start. i dont have any info thatll prove watt's points on wizard so itll be left at that

C'mon dude don't be a slut

I'm sure you'd have the money, but would you have the time?

good question, probably hire a team and i would supervise if it would happen, strictly people suggested off of a poll from multiple tournaments. the ones voted would run their respective games in the scene and get what we want. help me out astarte ;_;
dahbomb can get on his too haha the dream

I probably won't have time either lol. If things go right I'd just be busting my ass in a hospital :V

I want to echo that Clockw0rk vs. Neo is one of the greatest matches of all time. My wife was hype out of her mind watching that, and she doesn't even like fighting games.

Every time that Clockwork vs Neo match is brought up in here I have to stop whatever I'm doing to go watch it.

My Wii U name is the same as my NeoGAF username for those of you grabbing Smash Wii U this week.

Listening to Watson, sounds like level up was probably getting heat from sponsors because of SuperArcade/Watson's venting and they decided to split so they can both continue working towards their goals the way they want. I don't see any other reason why they would actually split considering Valle's general personality and how much he enjoys the community.

It's just somewhat unfortunate that Watson is getting heat for it because he's the one that's been in the more difficult position considering the last few years. That press release wasn't particularly good either.
