Every week, FGW will spotlight one GAFer to get a better picture of their history with fighting games, their preferences, and much more. For this week's FGW Player Spotlight, we will be taking a closer look at the irfaanator!
What fighting games do you currently play, what is your all time favourite and why?
Right now I haven't been play very much since I've been working on my thesis/defense that will end this week.
I was playing sf4, p4u, and uniel. Since, I'm a 010er, I don't have an all time fav, but I've been playing sf4 for the longest I guess.
What are your favorite mechanics from the current selection of fighting games and why? What are your least favorite and why?I was playing sf4, p4u, and uniel. Since, I'm a 010er, I don't have an all time fav, but I've been playing sf4 for the longest I guess.
Favorite mechanic for me would be the burst mechanic in arksys games. I like the idea of having something to get people off of you/extend combos. Being able to reset a situation is nice for those rushdown heavy games.
Least favorite would be ultras in SF4. It may actually the ability for some characters to easily combo into them, such as Rufus, rather than the risk/reward. Requiring something in return such as super meter (FADC) is fine for me since you have to weight the option of spending the bar or not.
What got you into fighting games? Are there any other genre of games you play?Least favorite would be ultras in SF4. Requiring something in return such as super meter (FADC) is fine for me since you have to weight the option of spending the bar or not.
What got me into fighting games were my friends during my undergrad. I always had an interest in fighting games when I was younger (a family friend that lived with us while he was doing his medical residency would take me to the AMC close by and play the Tekken Tag machine they had). IIRC, marvel 3 was coming out at the time and I didn't really know much about the mvc scene/fgc outside of #37, and he told me to watch WCW3 with the clockwork vs neo money match. When I watched that match, I was instantly hooked.
I play other games as well, but as of right now FFXIV has taken up much of the time, but I do like shooters, rpgs, and DOTA. Overall, I am a big fan of games that have a competitive scene, which is what really draws me to fighting games.

I would have to say Rose, since that is who I've played the most in SF4. I really like her all around playstyle, since its kind of how I see myself. Not too strong in offense/defense at least in AE when I started playing her.
Describe your style of play, and how do you play (local, online, etc.).
Playstyle would be all around I guess. I'm not the best on offense/rushing in, but I'm not the best on defense. I like to be more on the defensive side, which is why I loved Baiken in GG, but I like pressing buttons for some reason. I play mainly offline since I live in the Midwest so I don't have good connections with other ppl, and I don't have the mindset to play offline. I rage a lot when I play online.
What do you feel are your biggest strengths and weaknesses as a player?
Biggest strength would have to be my willingness to learn. I'm pretty ass since I don't get much time to play right now, but I have no qualms on losing a bunch to learn what I need to be doing. Biggest weakness would pressing buttons. I always press buttons at the wrong time since I always think something has more priority/will working when I know it doesnt.
Best and worst moments in the your fighting game career?
Best moment would be earlier in the year when I went 3-2 in Cleveland tourney I went to. I shouldve done better, but I lost to match-up inexperience.
Worst moment would be when I went 0-2 in all the games at UFGT since I was super busy and couldn't practice. Felt bad since I spent all that money to just do terrible.
What do you want from future fighting games?Worst moment would be when I went 0-2 in all the games at UFGT since I was super busy and couldn't practice. Felt bad since I spent all that money to just do terrible.
I would like to have an extensive training/tutorial mode that games like skullgirls have. Really anything that can draw more people into these games so companies still keep on making them.
Who should be on next week's GAF Player Spotlight?
Next week should be casperone if he hasn't done one. Hard to tell who hasn't done one with so many done. If he can't I don't think holy order sol has done one yet.
Since Dahbomb strongly encourages pre-orders, what games do you plan to buy that have been officially announced?
Hmm, I guess Xrd, but the only other game I am interested in is DA:Inquisition so I guess that one if it's good.
