Week of September 23rd to the 29th, 2013.

Fighting Games Weekly is the weekly discussion thread for all things fighting games. News, events, streams, videos, players, drama, everything fighting game related.

Don't know what to watch right now? Check the FGCPros Twitch Group or Jaxel's Stream Viewer. If you want to watch multiple streams at once, you can use Jaxel's customizable multiviewer as well.

New to FGC-GAF is the FGC-GAF Index which lists the fighting games GAFers plays as a neat reference with some rough statistics to boot. To add yourself to the index, quote this post and use the survey link below. Please remember to save/bookmark the "Edit your response" link so you can edit your responses if/when you buy a game already on the list or a new game that releases in the future.

ChrisG dominating that Cody player for 100 dollars.

Ez moneys, ez game, ez lyfe.

And why doesn't ChrisG use Ultra 1? It seems to do more damage than that air fireball he does.

Chin needs to get on that pizza and glowstick diet to be on Chris G's level.

How come all of these majors are happening when I work both days of the weekend? ;_;
I know that feel. I thought I was gonna sit back these last few days and enjoy some Japanese AE and GTAV this week but I've been pretty much shut down by some sudden deadlines popping up. Pretty much going to be missing out on every event in the next 7 days too :(

Ultra 1's utility is shit. Better to pick Ultra 2, a lot more situations to execute it.

Far more versatile. It's like metsu shoryuken vs metsu hadouken, only makes sense in certain matchups.

i only went on sunday but the best/most entertaining part of TGS by far was blazblue and madcatz booth.

the arcsys booth in general was only good because of blaz. Why they didnt bring anything else is kind of silly considering they have a lineup of 3 killer apps coming but whatever. all the other shit they brought was bullshit like those dating sims vita games etc.

literally nothing else in the event held my interest. the shops sold out of the very few good things by sunday and japan in general seems obsessed with smartphone bullshit

the fact that madcatz stole the show with a 5 year old game is something to say about TGS

no Kingdomhearts 3 stuff either :/

i played killer instinct for about 2 hours. game is fun i guess its just doublehelix has its hands tied with a lot of issues. they want to make a complete game and they are committed to their game but microsoft is tying their hands with the time window and a few other issues, unfortunately. i just hope the game gets a fair shake (even though i know it wont). glacius and jago are OD. im calling it now glacius v sabrewolf is like...7-3 matchup

Yea, it's far more versatile, especially as a combo ender (easier to land after a combo). The other ultra is pretty much an anti fireball one. like stated earlier, it's just used in certain matchups, thats all.

Can't wait for the tgs finals to be put up on youtube. Twitch archives/viewing is ass tier

Injustice patch notes coming in a few days. Get hype. Looking forward to getting back into that game again. I just hope the online warriors have leveled up.

Not Capcom, so people will shit on it. Looks like a shitty spectator game too.

I do hope it does end up getting a fair shake though.

Walkspeed aside, Makoto is the fastest character in the game. She has all the tools she needs to deal with this matchup (focus punish, good anti air, good pokes to keep people from walking/dashing up, good backdash to escape pressure, can't go for divekick mixup because of fukiage, good damage). Wheras a character like Cody can't even dream to escape her pressure when she's on him unless he guesses right on a throw. His backdash and backwards walkspeed sucks, she's harder for him to anti air, and Bingo is too slow to escape pressure that isn't tick > throw, If he gets knocked down he HAS to deal with the dive kick/short/empty jump mixup and that matchup is still only 6-4. Makoto has it a lot better than some other characters in this matchup.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying Cammy isn't good. But I do think she's heavily overrated. She's such a linear character that it isn't too hard to see what she's going for. The characters that can't anti air her or escape her pressure are fucked, but if you can do either of those two you have a fighting chance.

Makoto is the fastest character in the game, but like a lot of things with her it's a double-edged sword because she has to commit more than any other character just to move. Even moving forward with f.mp or f.lk is somewhat risky because if they jump at the right time you can eat a jump in because you haven't recovered yet. 7-3 for Cammy might be a bit of a stretch, but Cammy has all the tools to make things rough for Makoto. Makoto's cr.mp is good with dealing with Cammy from midrange, but you have to worry about that getting blown up by ex divekick. At certain ranges Makoto does have better antiair options against Cammy than a lot of other characters, but because of Cammy's godly walkspeed it's not hard for her to get in a range where it's hard for Makoto to deal with her approach. Cammy not getting her standard divekick shenanigans off of hk spiral arrow doesn't matter a whole lot since Makoto still gets fucked up by her close range frame trap/throw/divekick game. Makoto can't run some of her standard setups on Cammy either because Cammy is one of those characters who wakes up a frame or 2 slower than the rest of the cast.

Granted, a lot of this is just theorycrafting on my part since it's been a while since I've played an actually-good Cammy and when I do play AE these days, which isn't a lot, I usually don't play Makoto. Buuuut I have a pretty hard time believing that the match is 5-5.

I agree that Makoto wasn't anywhere near as bad as people made her out to be in Super, though. She wasn't good, but she wasn't, like, I'm-embarassed-that-I-lost-to-this-character tier like some people acted either. She was low-mid or so in that game, maybe. People kind of overstated how weak she was becaus the only other version of that character they had to compare to was crazy strong. Super Makoto wasn't bottom 5, but she was a joke compared to 3S Makoto.

at least vs cammy, you can do the haitani special (mash ultra 1 b/w 1 frame links lol, that was great). Makoto is the character I've always wanted to learn when I picked up sf4 late, but knew that I wouldn't be good w/ her at the beginning so I didn't. Now that I know how to play I'll be picking her up again.

I would definitely put makoto in the top 10 in any iteration. Since she has an air special that changes her jump arc, she is better than half the cast. If unblockables were found in ssf4, she couldve been higher on the tier list.

I think Makoto is definitely top 10 on the on-paper tier list. Maybe top 5. If anyone was to ever master all her crazy crossup/unblockable axe kick setups and be able to pull them off 90% of the time then she would be fucking gross.

But on a practical tier list, she's probably just outside of top 10 imo.

supersantarouman :O

It seems nobody noticed, but while Latif was in Japan he was apart of the Yubiken stream where he played some of their players and online randoms. He played a FT5 vs Supersantarouman. I expected Latif to blow him up, but it was actually a really amazing set. Arguably as good as the ones Haitani had against Mago and Juso. Check it out if you want to see more high level SF4.

The previous Canada Cup tournaments felt like big events but this one seems to have very little build up or hype.

Any word on what international players are attending?

So what about BlazBlue sat well with you? They probably emphasized it because that will be the first of their new fighting game wave for consoles. Makes sense if you think about it.

Kokonoe looks beast btw.

The website mentions Tokido, Mago, Fuudo, Bonchan, Kazunoko, Infiltration, Dakou, Xaiohai, Ricky and Justin for AE. Which is fair enough if they show up. No Xian which is even better.

kokonoe is...interesting

kagura feels nice to me though. my issue with blaz is i have never found "my" character. kagura feels like he could be the one

It's Namco doing that? Could of swore that it was Victor Entertainment making those youtube claims on the songs used in game.
