I believe it was Ricky Lo who asked Destiny's Child why they didn't call themselves Destiny's Children in a serious tone.

Maybe it's just me but a good number of Filipinos and mingling abroad don't mix well for some reason, they tend to be pushy and too pro-Pinoy at the wrong places and wrong times.

I'm not Filipino but my partner is. We live with his family and I'm considered an honorary Filipino, whatever that is. Maybe this is the best place to ask for advice on dealing with the family. Insider tips?

Nothing out of the ordinary, really. Be nice, respectful, and all that jazz.

Rice, rice everywhere. You probably already know that.

Lol. Ohhh rice... with every meal. I've been living with them for about four years now, it's something I've definitely adapted to.

if you dont know someone's name, calling them "auntie" or "uncle" is good enough (for the older folks at least)

haha or "tita" and "tito" if you're feeling good about it. shiet i still do this, and sometimes accidentally say it to my ninangs/ninongs (i dont know why i have so many).

As a half flip, I need a solid list of common insults in Tagalog so I know what my coworkers are saying to me.

Help a hypebeast out.

Bump.

I'm noticing advertising on GMA about presidential elections (hard to miss when all you hear are songs about voting for 5 straight minutes), and I've come to the realization that I have no idea about the political climate there since moving away.

Pinoy-GAF, how do you rate the current president's tenure? I assume he's running for re-election?

hey guys, why is drunk driving so tolerated here in the Philippines? There is a serious lack of concern about the entire thing. Nobody in my experience has given two shits about driving home drunk.

Everyone just looks at me like I'm a fucking moron when I tell people they probably shouldn't drive right now.

Some people just don't care but there is a service in Manila that can drive you home safely when you are drunk.

Jollibee!! Bring them to jollibee. Actually pinoys love to eat. Pinoys have this love for rice cakes, lechon, and adobo! But yeah, just be respectful. Filipino family ties are tight and it is highly valued.

Pinoy GAF, whaddapp!!

I feel so at home lol

You miss Kris Aquino?

He's doing fine I would say 6/10. I think Noynoy still has a few years left in his current tenure I haven't read much about it either but Kris Aquino would always take the headlines if she feels being bullied by one of her ex's LOL.

It's still like show business. People vote for the famous ones and they also endorse different products!

Same situation here although we are married now and have our own place. It took me awhile to figure things out. My wife trained me not to be so talkative at family gatherings. She also taught me when to know I was being insulted. I would be like "but but they liked me".

"no they hated you. You almost got jumped by my cousins". :(

I'm in good with the family now though. Now that I understand the culture abit better, in retrospect I'm surprised they didn't kill me when we eloped and finally told them a year later.

Haha! This is typical in provinces. But that's how Filipino's are. They forgive and forget the bad things and just move on.

Penoy needs to be ran over by a steamroller along with his sister. Hell, the whole dynasty.

haha!

The commercials made it seem like it was going to be another presidential election or something, haha. I actually was thinking before my prior post that it seems too soon for it to happen.

Hmm, what is the best way of learning Tagalog?
I mean, I have a book named "Basic Tagalog" but have never actually gone further than a few pages into it.

I'm thinking maybe I would be motivated by having a teacher, so I'm probably gonna look into night classes.

My goal would be to understand Tagalog sometime next year - it'll probably take longer learning how to talk Tagalog, even though I'm good at the accent and know very few words as half my family are Filipino.

Everyone knows that I don't understand or speak the language, so I think it would be funny to actually learn it in secrecy (only with my mother and sister knowing I'm studying it) and then be able to understand what people are saying. My motivation would also be, that at some point I could decide to communicate with my the Filipino side of my family in Tagalog. It would also be super awesome if I could get to talk with my lola (grandmother) natively but she's like 79 now so I wouldn't have much time to achieve such a goal probably, I don't know.

You know what kinda helped me understand some words better in Tagalog, despite being unable to read/speak it? Attending a Tagalog mass, especially since they have the pamphlets with all the words spelled out. It also boggled my mind, but strangely, I could at least read a few words here and there.

On the subject of aunties/uncles/ninongs/ninangs... I assume everyone new I meet at a party is an auntie/uncle unless told otherwise by my mom (as the exceptions are often ninangs/ninongs).

I'm half Filipino. I also believe I am the only Filipino vegan on the planet. Is there a such thing as vegetarian or vegan Filipino recipes?

Edit: I googled it, and I found something.

However, when I told my family that I was vegan, they thought I was crazy and said "How are you going to live?" So I suppose I'm a rare breed of Filipino.

I'll probably look at into. What I already looked at though was lessons and I can get 36 lesson for around $310 through 5 months (1 lesson a week) which to me seems expensive.

Are there any great website to learning basics and a little bit more advanced stuff?

I know these:
http://www.tagalog1.com

And then I stumbled upon this:
http://www.seasite.niu.edu/tagalog/

My ex-girlfriend who lives in the North of the Philippines is a vegetarian. You're not alone! ;)

Well, it's the subliminal message!!!! He's just telling people that these are my bets for the senatorial race. VOTE FOR THEM!! LOL

*This is just a rough translation of what you posted hehe.

Lots of Pinoy vegan in 'Pinas. Most people from the provinces just eat veggies and uhm rats or frogs or crickets, sometimes, Uhm.. well yeah.

I'm Phil Am, but don't speak any Tagalog, and I live in Utah/Idaho so I'm pretty white-washed you could say :P

I've been to the Philippines a couple times, though. Just went to Boracay about three weeks ago, and man it was crowded as heck, compared to when I was there 15 years ago.

I think the best way to learn Tagalog is to talk to someone who speaks the language, if you have a filipino friend who could teach you or a professional tutor could be great, you will be able to learn tagalog easily. My friend taught a korean student the basic words in just a couple of weeks and now she can converse in complete tagalog sentences. Also you can watch filipino movies or tv programs so you could listen to the most common words we use. :)

It's summer time so it's a given. Not to mention that the school term has just ended. But Boracay has changed a lot since that 15 years, so it can't be helped.

I'm watching filipino tv-series sometimes but it's unbearable to me watching all the drama, which is very common in their shows. I actually bought Pinoy Big Brother and Wag Kang Lilingon many years ago haha. My mother is native Filipino but it's very frustrating when I can't understand what she's telling me, when I tell her to speak in Tagalog to me, just too many things being said at the same time.

I'm thinking after I have basic words like mabuti, ano pangalan mo, kumusta etc. What would be the next step? I don't think I can learn the language by just being told basic words and sentences and then saying them through my days or will it help? It's even hard to remember how to spell a word like "pinakamainam", just one word, yet so hard to remember.

Guys, do you think it'll help the learning process if I also write down Tagalog texts I read?

Also, are there any great books on Amazon that has things to practice in it so I get to write down also?

Right now, I'm listening to a MP3 about syllables like Maluay, Malumi, mabilís etc, a little hard to remember as well.

You ask them, ano pinagkakaabalahan mo ngayon? or you ask a question like "Alam mo ba 'yung balita kay Angel Locsin?". Something to that effect. The good thing about Tagalog words is that you spell them like how you say it.

Nobody makes Crispy Pata out here in the UK. And if they do, it's probably too far for me to get to. :(

Aww, that's so sad to know. Maybe you can cook it yourself? Boil the leg until it softens then deep fry it until golden brown! Dip in soy sauce with garlic and onions, vinegar, or just plain catsup :D

Been doing stuff like sisig, so that shouldn't be too hard I think! ^^

Hi Pinoy-Gaf! I forgot this thread existed, so I'm making myself known! Hi Gaf!

Born and raised in Davao City, but am currently studying in Manila (well, actually currently studying for a semester in New York, but I'll be back come June)

Sobrang natutuwa lang ako na may Pinoy thread pala rito sa Gaf :)

Haha. Dunno if you follow the new ones on TFC but these batch of soaps are terrible this year. They all have a variation of the theme "poor girl becomes successful" and fights the "bitchy antagonist." Best running soap so far is that one with the maid trying to become a stewardess. I sometimes watch it with my mom and it is freakin' hilarious.

Same in the US. Unless you live in California or New York/Jersey, legit Filipino food is really hard to come by.

Good lord, Tagalog looks like a foreign language to me now. I can still understand it, but the text seems almost impossible to read. -____-

Spoken/conversational Tagalog is fine though. I can watch TFC all day and understand everything... hell as of this moment I'm watching Umagang Kay Ganda hahaha.

I'm from Los Angeles so I definitely know them feels. Just taking a 10 minute drive from my old place to West Covina for some lechon, chicken skins, whatever fried was just too damn easy. ;__;

There's a large Filipino population in Toronto, so there's a ton of places that sell food around here.

There's one about 10 minutes away from me, and a number scattered around another area close by, as well.

Anytime I'm craving something, I have those places to pick from.

Sorry for the brag post.

Ohhh.. sisig!!! the greasy ones topped with egg are the best LOL!!

Well, I translated it based on the tagalog I know. It's using the traditional tagalog so it seems to be like that. Nowadays, kids fail their Filipino subjects. I'm kind of sad knowing that this is the case.

My mom is in Rancho Cordova now had I known you guys earlier and better, I could ask her to cook for you stuff like Crispy Pata and lechon kawali with Lumpiang shanghai and many more!!!

Try watching these soaps. They're a bit outdated but nice.
1. Sa Sandaling Kailangan Mo ako.
2. Be Careful with My Heart (Sir Chief and Maya the stewardess one)
3. Encantadia (It's like LOTR, pinoy version in a way minus the ring)
4. Maalaala Mo Kaya (This is mostly heavy drama but very heart-warming stories)

Chicken Joy Skin!!! Andok's, Baliwag, Lydia's, Ayer's LOL these are the good stuff here

Matuwa ka!!! Saan ka sa Davao?

Galing Matina, malapit sa Times Beach (katapat lang ng bahay namin ang SM :)) dati mga carabao lang ang nandoon eh :lol

Penoy needs to be ran over by a steamroller along with his sister. Hell, the whole dynasty.

I'm actually really happy of what he has done (RH Bill passed, damn you Supreme Court for stopping it, the government seems to be much more well managed now, the Private-Public projects and the Pantawid Pamilya Program). He does do some stupid stuff that annoys me though (where's the FOI Bill that we want?)

I actually miss watching Telenovelas. Sure, they were brainless and cheesy, but they were great for passing the time and having a conversation. I used to watch Kampanerang Kuba, Mula sa Puso, Saan Ka Man Naroroon (well basically the Claudine Baretto-era of Telenovelas :P ) I would watch more if I wasn't so busy plus if I had a TV back in my dorm.

This reminds me that I have to watch "Bayan Ko" - from what I watched so far, it's a decent show. You guys should watch it to!

PS: Anyone attending the Filipino conference (I think it's named FIND) this week at Harvard? I was invited to join the Filipino club here so I'm heading out there. They say it's more of a Fil-Am thing, and it's kinda sad I don't get to represent my actual school (currently in an exchange program here in New York, so I have to represent my school here)

I'm going to the Philippines in a few weeks with my wife to meet her family in Cebu and have a wedding ceremony. I think we're going to Boracay, too. We're trying to find a place that can accomodate her giant family... I think we might've finally found a place as of last night, but it's not certain yet. haha.
I'm buttering her family up by bringing tons of American candy and a few cheapy Android tablets, so hopefully they'll all like me. Her nieces and sisters all seem to, but I don't speak to her brothers or nephews. Not sure why.
Should be fun... I don't speak a lick of Tagalog or Cebuano, though.

it really depends. but most of them are too caring.

Lol I'm in the great state of Texas. Everything else is amazing here but Filipino food. Houston and Austin has a couple of good spots but for the most part they're really obscure and is at least 3 hours drive away from Dallas. :(

Funny thing is, when I was living in Zamboanga 10 years ago I was one of those kids who barely passed Tagalog class haha. That and Sibika was the hardest classes to exist. @___@

And yeah, I think I've seen a couple of those soaps. I don't watch that much soaps though since they drag it out so long and the endings are pretty predictable.

Damn, most of that stuff came out more than 10 years ago. I was just a kid back then and I hated those soaps since they always came on at the same time as GMA and AXN's anime programming lol.

Man, I went to the Philippines last year for vacation... now I wanna go back. I need some legit lechon and Mang Tomas haha.

The closest thing I've found here in the UK are small shops that occasionally sell packets of sinigang, sisig, caldareta, pancit, and frozen longanisa. Everything else I have to come up with from mother's recipes, lol. As long as I have patis, I can make a fuck ton of stuff!

Ugh, I just reminded myself of toron... I need it now. :(

I always hear Filipinas make great girl friends.

Mine's great.

The downside is the family that comes attached - when people come to visit they really come to visit, and the concept of staying in a hotel and personal space is completely foreign. Be prepared to have a dozen family members all crammed in your house.

I always hear Filipinas make great girl friends.
I have been in 7 relationships with Filipinas and I mostly have bad experiences. To me, they take everything too personal and drama can always be created out of nothing. But it depends like everything.

Native pinays are like that in my experience. Americanized pinays are a little more manageable
