Been jamming to parokya ni edgar, rivermaya and eraserheads recently. Great bands. I was too young to recognize how great their music was back in the day. Pare ko and ligaya just fits my current stae in life lmao.
Parokya ni Edgar and E-heads are the two best bands of the Philippines bar none, due to their lasting appeal and influence in filipino rock in general. Love their Bente CD (been bumping that here and there) though I'd still like to get an E-head album (possibly cutterpillow or one of their greatest hits).
Still would like to know more filipino bands old and new, been talking to my pinsans over Facebook for suggestions and they've given me pretty good ones, lots leaning towards folk and beach music.
Not really underground but try Up Dharma Down! I heard that they're popular outside the Philippines too but I can't attest to that since I live in the Philippines lol )
Maybe not necessarily bands, but I really think for her work, Kitchie Nadal is extremely underrated in the country. I've been catching up to her recent works and they're all ace.
Hidden Nikki is a great jazz band, and they have an album up on Spotify. I haven't really caught up with BP Valenzuela yet, but I heard she's doing stellar work (sample here).
So yeah, there's pretty much a lot more. Check the Philippine corner of Spotify since I find it a great way to look for some underground Filipino music (though understandably, they don't cover everything)
IMO, Up Dharma Down is great, but I find them overrated. They have good songs though, but I feel like other people have been catching up with their work.

If you can afford it, TFC since recently they've added english subtitles to almost all their shows. Doesn't help that most shows try to speak in Taglish but it's better than nothing.
Also it's good to have someone who you can speak fluent tagalog to so they can help you out and learn along the way.
TFC is too expensive for me, and they never replied to me when I sent them an email. My whole family basically knows Tagalog but they aren't around me daily or even weekly. I also had a girlfriend who where from the Philippines until we broke up two weeks ago.
Maybe I should just read the Basics Tagalog book I have. Unfortunately my mom is not good at explaining the language to me.

Man, I just learned that the Philippines is the country with the highest rate of children prostitution in the world, with 80.000 children working as prostitutes according to UNICEF.
By the way, are there any English sources for following news in the Philippines?
The worst part is that due to the overpopulation in manila, that might not be an accurate number since there are probabaly thousands more that are unaccounted for.
Which is why it is hard to know exactly how many in the philippines, manila in particular, that are poor or in need since there's always new migrants coming from all over the philippines to work and such.
It seems like Miriam Santiago and Duterte really like each other, and are supporting each other, at least in the debate. But can somebody tell us in here about their politics? I am of the impression that they are opposite each other?
Both are good contenders to be president in my opinion despite their obvious flaws.
Miriam is well known to be very straightforward in her political agenda though having a marcos as her runningmate isn't doing any good for her.
Duterte feels a bit like trump in that he wants very drastic changes for philippines which will get him a lot of enemies if elected president. It doesn't help that he is vilified for his unethical ways to solve problems as mayor of Davao City.

He'd set out bounties for any drug pushers and crime doers (dead or alive) and calls them out live.
He admitted on occasion that he would bring the death penalty back once elected and he's not afraid to use violence as means to solve problems.
That being said based on my Cousin's anectodes of being in Davao, Duterte managed to instill discipline to citizens through fear and severe punishment. She says that people are more likely to listen and follow the rules as well people have thanked him for setting Davao somewhat straight despite of his actions.
It seems like both Duterte and Santiago came out the best from the first debate. And that people are somewhat angry with Roxas and Binay. While people are indifferent with Poe Grace.
Yeah, coming from Davao City... I say pretty much out of fear from the lower class, which translated to respect from the middle class (who wanted these "undesirables" out).
Basically, rumor has been going that he has ordered killings of drug lords and other criminals through the infamous Davao Death Squad. It started with drug lords, then it become the drug traders themselves (some who are children just trying to help out their family), eventually ending with petty criminals and ex-convicts. Basically, they've been going after "undesirables" in society.
Duterte has been mum about his involvement, but he hasn't condoned them. In fact, he's said that he's pretty much not against extra-judicial killings (as long as "it's within the law" smh)
But yes, it did make Davao a safer city, making more businessmen invest in the town.
As long as Binay isn't president that's all that matters. Roxas isn't favourable right now because his dependancy of upholding Pnoy's "right of way" legacy whatever that may be. I still think if Binay was president, he would revert any progress that Pnoy had going despite what his critics may say.
Lots of good intention from Roxas, Miriam, and Duterte but I'm still pissed that Binay has a good chance of becoming president.
Wow, very interesting to learn about Davao City. I'm not sure if I would want a guy like that at the top, and on the other hand it seems like it's working. But still..
Obvious corruption that he's admitted willingly but twists is as "we're all human right, we make mistakes sometimes" to ploy the uneducated and poor to vote for him. Not only that but he has instances of misusing taxpayer money for his own gains and his campaigns are blatant lies.
I'm very biased yes but think of him being he same as Erap or even Gloria during their presidency.
I don't know Erap or Gloria as I only now got interested in Filipino politics and news. I feel closer to my Filipino side than I have done the past four years.
But Duterte seems like a candidate one would be wise not to vote on. Seeing that too can be corrupt. I really wonder how anyone can get rid of the corruption in the government.
The congress won't even pass the anti-dynasty bill.
Too much money in politics to ever set it straight.
I somewhat believe that Pnoy was a flawed but fair president during his time though that's not gonna stop those below him from being corrupt.
Political dynasties will never end and progress will always come at a slow drag.
Duterte is somewhat of a wildcard since he's one of the few modest and somewhat humble candidates in the election which makes him a bit of an everydayman, killings and all.
I just want it to be somewhat free of corruption. Surely much more free of it, than it is today.
By the way, here's the candidates for BinibiningPilipinas 2016. But I can't seem to figure out what day the event is. And man, we're not gonna be in the top 10 at this years Miss Universe, so better enjoy it while it lasts with Pia Wurtzbach.
What other big figureheads should I read up on? Anything like celebrities to presidents, the national soccer team or what have you. I'm planning on reading up on Benigno Simeon "Ninoy" Aquino Jr. when I'm done studying the Marcos family.
I'm curious about the economics of his platform to see the feasibility of it, particularly lowering cost of medicine and agricultural goods.
They say they are aware of the Marcos family's notorious reputation, but like Bongbong, they are focusing on his campaign platform, such as stopping drug abuse, creating more jobs, and lowering costs on products like medicines and agricultural goods.
Hmmm, I would say stagnant. It's a good thing Philippines is a go to for call centers. That's one of the main factors on why it has not declined. It may improve depending on who takes over.
I may be harsh against our current candidates but the current president(Nonoy Aquino) is actually good. Economy improved because of him.

Stagnant? Philippines is one of the countries who are developing their economy the most in the country. Unfortunately because of the corruption, the citizens don't feel that growth themselves.
The growth helps mainly the rich and to some extent the middle class, doing jack for the rest living in poverty. Doesn't help that since most politicians pocket the money to themselves, the flow of money never trickles down to the ones who need it the most.

It's strange to talk about development in the Philippines, honestly. It's slow, but I noticed that with the communities I've worked with, some people have been given more chances to rise up the ranks. I have worked with a community in Payatas (the infamous dumpsite), and we helped build some of the houses for their neighborhood. Now, some of the teens we've helped there take classes in financial literacy (offered by the stock exchange), and I see that she's been working in the finance sector (and was bragging about thinking of buying stocks). Some of the people we've worked with in Payatas stopped garbage collecting and were able to find other jobs. That said, those jobs aren't that technical and they are still paid quite low.
Speaking of Payatas, last time I checked, that dumpsite has been slowly been removed of garbages. That one mound next to the community I worked with is starting to grow some grasses.
Then again, you have so many more impoverished communities that are in immediate need of help, more so now even. I guess things have been progressing far too slowly. While one community starts to rise from the ashes, another is experiencing crises after crises. I am not sure if our government is actually inept (some of my friends who are in politics and economics don't really like him), or that our government is actually competent but the problems the current administration inherited are so damn plenty that it takes more than a few administrations to fix things (again, some of my friends who work in government actually commend this current administration. Everything is actually audited and taken into account for, unlike before when a government employee can simply ask money from the government without so much fanfare).
But yes, it's mostly the middle class who has benefited from the economic boom. Those in the lower class still need a lot more programs to help them alleviate themselves from poverty. There is already some in place, but we need to be more aggressive about this. I am not sure if empowering the middle class is the way to go, since the normal person from the middle class won't give a rat's ass about anyone "below them."
I am not a fan of either. Well, I am a fan of Miriam, but her candidacy is just a nuisance at this point. She's consistently polling low, she has stage-4 cancer (that debate showed how less feisty she is now). Duterte is eh, to be honest. He's just soundbite after soundbite. And for the love of god, I don't get it with these candidate's admiration for fucking Bongbong Marcos.
The thing to note this presidential election is that many of these candidates MAY be disqualified or may resign from position: Poe with her citizenship switcheroo; Binay with his corruption cases; Duterte with the alleged killings (though I doubt this one); heck even Miriam might need to resign from presidency if her illness worsens.
It's a veep race more so than ever, which is why you had seemingly-interested candidates drop out of the presidential race. I've heard from several political analysts that the real "election" will take place after the actual elections. It's almost straight out of a cheesy political movie, but it's still completely plausible.

Exactly this. It helps the rich but not the poor. It's horrible.
It seems like my whole family in the Philippines wanna vote for Duterte and Bongbong Marcos. He seems to be really popular. What kind of cancer does Miriam have though? Isn't it something that can eventually get better with time?
[edit] I just learned Imelda Marcos' daughter is the governor of Ilocos Norté. I guess I'm not surprised.
