Final Fantasy 5 Four Job Fiesta 2014: That Classic Taste [now ending]

Yep, all of that right above me. Saved me time typing it out.

You can and should steal a gigantic pile of twin lances when you get to Val/Bal castle, they are in the basement on Object d'art. Considering both thieves and ninja can use them you're looking at at least four.

Do Dragoons benefit from Dual Wielding, or are they better off just Jumping? I just mastered a few classes for each character at Castle Bal, and now I'm doing my usual job mixing before heading out.
...what.

By then, I had like 7k gil and that's because I barely had to spend money. Then again, by that point, I'd been playing the game for like 4-5 hours.

I did some level grinding, but in general I always had a ton of gil on me. In my previous runs where I didn't wanna grind for them in World 1, I just spent all my money on items. *shrug* Maybe it's because I found that I never really broke any rods with my Time Mage?

Oh, as for Ninja, Dual-Wield is a decent ability for a Berserker. You could give your Thief Equip Axes and a Twin Lance, and your Ninja Mug and the Chicken Knife. Or give your Thief Throw and a Main Gauche, put him in the back row, and have him support your party with potions while throwing Shurikens and Fuma Shurikens when able. Throw is also a good ability for a mage, as the elemental scrolls are tied to your magic stat (though this won't help you in this run). Finally, if your Ninja knows Equip Axes, it can tear most enemies apart with two Twin Lances (somewhere around 3600 HP per turn without taking defense into account).

Oh, and Smoke is identical to Flee, so which one you use is up to preference.

Gah, just remembered Image. It's identical to the Blink spell, but it also takes up an entire ability slot and can only be used on the caster.

Thanks for the very helpful wall of text.
Reminds me I was going to ask since I haven't gotten to a point I can just try it, can Fire Scrolls be used on a character wearing a Flame Ring, and is it worth the cost?

I just got to the wind shrine. Do I keep my other characters as freelancers until I reach the next crystals or do I make them all my chosen job for Bartz?

If you're doing Natural, only Bartz gets the Wind Job and everyone else is a Freelancer. If you're doing anything else, all 4 characters get the Wind Job until you reach the next crystal.

Excellent I'm just doing the basic run, so for knights I shall have.

Just tested this, you cannot target your own party with scrolls.

My jobs so far in my fourth run are: Monk, Thief and Knight. As I ran a lot in Karnak to get Elixirs the Brave Blade is off-limits. And again these jobs are all physical.

Dear Gilgabot,

Screw you.

Yours truly,
Heropon

Edit: The fourth job is Chemist and it has a specially good sinergy with Monk. I suppose Gilgabot isn't that evil.

Does this even count as a boss battle?

!RapidFire makes quick work of her.

Got my weapons and my Magic Lamp, ready for the Rift (I'll have to make one trip out to buy Hermes Sandals, probably).

Hit my first snag high-tailing it out of Karnak -- ten minutes goes quickly! I was having the worst time dealing efficiently with the Gigas enemies (absorb wind is not a world 1 blue mage's friend).

Compounding the problem was a rookie mistake on my part - I broke a rod against Liquid Flame, but forgot to re-equip a sword on Lenna. As a result goblin punch did a whopping 9 damage, which I assumed was due to high defense so I didn't use my other, well-equipped mages. Basically had to wait for my one berserker to do decent damage. It took...a while.

Can't blame Gilgabot - just plain careless on my part. Can't wait to run it again and get my third job!

Managed to talk down Garula with my 4WM party thanks to the Healing Staff, Protect, and well spamming group heals.

Next job: Time Mage!

Oh, and it's kinda funny that the mobile version of FFV gives Melusine stockings and underwear. Not like anything's visible anyway.

After running through the start of the game with Knight/Berserker (only a bit rough on Liquid Flame), I'm actually kind of disappointed in getting White Mage, because it reduces the party's damage output by almost a quarter. It'll make up for it later, but it's just annoying now.

So characters with high magic have stronger heals and offensive magics, right? But what about something like Protect? Is that altered in any way, like lasting longer or reducing more damage?

Different status effects have different durations, and the caster's magic stat doesn't affect that in any way. In the case of most positive status effects (Protect, Haste, Shell, and Float, but not Reflect), the duration is "until the end of battle unless dead/dispelled".

Offensive status effects aren't affected by the magic stat either, iirc. Their hit rate is just based on level of the caster, level of the target, and the target's magic evasion.

So my 2xKnight/Black Mage/Thief party actually makes the early game really easy. The Knights Two-Hand a lot of stuff (quick takedown of Magisa and Iron Claw before either could do their thing), the Bl Mage gets me rod-breaking and decent offensive magic, and the Thief lets me load up on hi-potions plus other handy stuff.

Guessing it'll get tougher late game as not being able to mix and match catches up to me.

You going to grind for Flame Rings for healing? Other than that I can't imagine you having much trouble.

So my Dancer has the highest defense on my team right now White Mage/Red Mage/Beastmaster/Dancer

Never thought I'd see a day where Dancer was the "tank" lol

This team was pretty boring until the chemist came. Chemist is very overpowered but I think I prefer bards for murdering Exdeath, the songs are faster than using Antidote + Holy Water all the time and I don't have to buy so many items.

I crashed last night after doing it, but I can't believe I got past Atomos in good shape. Yeah, I had to throw Phoenix Downs, but wooooow. At this point, I feel like treating the party like a 3x Berserker + Monk/Potion-thrower party, because... that's kinda what it is.

I suppose Gilgabot isn't that evil.
Nope, Gilgabot is evil.

I probably should, but it's such a pain. Think I'm going to skip them and hope my piles of Hi-potions last me until I can steal some.

I think you'll be fine. You can steal Reflect Rings in ExDeath's Castle to counter the magic onslaught, and other than ExDeath you shouldn't have any major trouble with any World 2 bosses.

I think after this run, I'll do either a Natural 750 run or a random 750 run to compensate for essentially doing a Natural/BerserkerRisk/Random/SurpriseNo750 run.

I say I don't like using magic much in FF games post-FF5, so I'm starting to really miss using it in FF5. Plus FF5's cast animations look so good.

Yay! Got my GBA copy in the mail two days early so I can start this for the first time this evening. Plus I picked up the official guide to go with it because I love having guides to go with RPGs. Allows me to be nostalgic without putting 70 hours into it again.

It is done.

Red mage, white mage, summoner, and dragoon is a pretty easy set of jobs to go through the game with. It's pretty fun though and there is a lot of synergy. !Lance keeps my mages MP up as I'm wandering through dungeons, letting me spam my spells. Dualcast allows me to blow up bosses with holy and whatever summon I want to use; it also allows me to toss on my buffs fast.

Thanks for the event! It was fun as usual.

Kientin, I'm so jealous of your party. Mages are the best thing about this game thanks to their versatility and stupid Gilgabot keeps giving me thieves and monks. My next playthrough is going to be random team 750 like I said yesterday to see what kind of crazy overpowered stuff my party can do.

Garula down with my white mage party!

I wonder if Gilgabot will grace me with the awesome Mystic Knight now?

NOPE. TIME MAGE.

Fucking white mage and time mage.

Sounds like Gilgy might be saving a Bard/Chemist for you next. Minimum physical attack potential! (Hopefully not.)

Just got past Garula and Gilgy gave me Time Mage

1 Freelancer + 2 Black Mages + 1 Time Mage

This is actually only my second time through FFV so I have no idea what I'm doing

Time Mage is great. Sure, it means you have two support classes and no real offense, but at least TMs can equip knives and break rods!

And who knows, you could still go Ninja/Samurai for the last two. ;)
Okay, as a complete FFV newbie, what does "breaking rods" mean?

You can buy Flame, Frost, and Thunder Rods in Carnak (or find them in a few places prior to that). Equip one, then use it as an Item in battle while equipped (select the Item command, then push up to see what you've got equipped and use it). It casts the -aga version of whatever element the rod is, and breaks the rod.

This is enormously useful for bosses early in the game.
Oh, that is handy! Good to know then. Thank you!

These flashbacks sure are orange tinted a lot more than I remember in the GBA version. In any case Solune and his crew plow through the next 3 bosses with focus punching. Having auto battle is rather nice for these simplistic boss fights. Karlabos, Siren (with some potions) and Magissa were just quick focus punch auto battles. Forza didn't get to show up. Thank you monk for doing all the work. Also what a coincidence, green is Solune's favourite colour~

Garula was a slugfest of focus punching, hoping for counters and potion usage just like my 2012 run that started off with Monk. And just like in 2012 we get Berserker on the water job. Barehanded + Berserker means at least I don't need to grab any weapons until at least the death sickle.

You should either have 2 Freelancers or none at this point. Are you doing a Natural run? Then you should have two. Are you doing a standard run of any kind? Then you shouldn't have any.

standard
and i'll keep that in mind and change my last character now

Turns out the revived form of Archeoaevis is immune to all elements save one.

Bear element

Edit: Bear element is also the Jackanapes weakness.

How have you been holding up?

I guess I would make 3 of the members Time Mages to allow for the better range of item equipping, with !White as their set ability.

If you haven't yet, go back to Lenna's castle and get the Healing Staff. Equip it on your lowest STR person and have them "attack" your party members to heal them for 250-ish HP, which is more effective than low-level healing spells. Also very effective against undead.

Once you get to Karnak you can finally ditch the starting weapons/armor for your WM(s).

Buy a crapload of ice rods. You'll need them against Liquid Flame.

The trick to surviving aginst Liquid Flame is to get him into the tornado form (where he casts FIR3 on himself) and DON'T ATTACK. Wait for him to run out of MP healing himself. Then start breaking ice rods 'till he's dead.

Just about to clear through the rest of World 1 in my Fiesta run tonight. Have to knock off the individual meteor bosses (Titan, Purobolos and Manticore) and after that it's smooth sailing. Will need to steal that Gaia Hammer from Titan.

I will admit that many of these boss fights are turning into a routine of click Auto-Battle, watch Berserkers/Knight slug it out with two-handed weapons, unclick Auto-Battle to potion up with Thief when HP gets low, wash-rinse-repeat. But on the bright side it's allowed me to blaze through a good chunk of World 1 in record time.

After that I'm going to hop back over to my "all jobs" playthrough and tackle Castle Exdeath to wrap up World 2 of that run. Seeing how some of these Google Play achievements require me to level up my guys to Level 99, I wonder how tedious that'll get after I clear through all of the optional dungeons. Also looking forward to taking the new jobs (Oracle, Cannoneer, Gladiator and Necromancer) for a spin as I've yet to try them out. Heck, for that matter, I've never used a Mime either.

While farming cash for Flame Rings...

Two Death Sickles at once!

Money in da bank.

Flame Rings were bought, Rods were stocked up, pianos were played.

All his loose ends tied up, Darius enters a brave new world.

How does Catch work if you deequip it? Does the game save the monster you caught if you switch the ability and bring it back later? Or do you have to run with 4 catch from save to boss if you want to release cannon rush?

It saves the monster you have caught. You can even see it on the status screen, whether you have Catch equipped or not.

Well that makes catch 10x better then I thought it was, not just for the fiesta but for future normal runs of FFV (I know what a crazy thought). Guess once I get to Baal castle I need to grind until everyone has catch and at least grind my white mage to mastered red so that they can have double cast.

Well, I finally got back to playing tonight and got to the Earth Crystal.

And my last job is....Dragoon. (Dammit.)

So now I have Monk, Time Mage, Ranger, and Dragoon.

Should be...interesting?

just got past the Fire Crystal and got...Bard....
Black Mage, Time Mage and Bard...

I don't know how to feel about this guys...
