Final Fantasy 7 Remake: Chunk 1 (CyberConnect2, UE4) Trailer, "PS4 Console Debut"

My main points of interest are:

-How will they handle the transition from town/city to worldmap (we don't know how this will be in FFXV either)
-Style and scale of the worldmap, 1:1 like FFXV or large zones like in FFXII
-How will the full party be handled on screen?

I'm not too optimistic on this releasing Holiday 2017, unless FFXV is at a stage very soon where the development team can start transitioning over to VII in mass.
We know they are/were trying to make it totally seamless in FFXV and IIRC they've kind of hinted that they've achieved that when they said that Noctis & Co would be taking a real-time boat trip from that coastal area to Altessia.

It'll be interesting to see what kind of solution they'll do with the world map/overworld/overall structure of the game world in FFVII though, and probably the inevitable backlash when there is no flyable airship in the game, not with these kinds of graphics.

Why could there be no airship in their version of what the overworld is because of the graphics?

If they seperate the city areas completely off from the world map like the original game, they should have no problem simply creating a big area like that and just filling it with stuff

I feel like if I were to search for "sick anime guy", this version of Cloud would show up. I know I just need time to adjust to his new look but dang... I like this Kingdom Hearts design and Advent Children design so much more at the moment. His face looks sick and seconds away from coughing blood. And that would be actually be a cool element... Imagine Cloud coughing roughly or stumbling at times.

Looks like a bunch of other "cinematic" games out these days. I think people see the Final Fantasy VII name lose all sense of objectivity.

Modern Final Fantasy games (IV onwards) were cinematic games.

Because of the camera angle limitations and how there was no voice-acting, less cinematography, etc, you don't realise it, but FF's core story beats were always highly cinematic.

That's true. It's also true that how cinematic was meant back then is quite a bit different than how it is intended today - FFVII had a lot of humor and funny moments that might get lost nowadays, simply because they don't fit the new mature & serious style (which is completely understandable at this point). We could witness this in AC & CC.

Not really. Wasting time on showing off the luminous engine over and over, the broken state of FFXIV 1.0, letting Toriyama run amuck with FF13 and its sequels, the awfulness of The 3rd Birthday, the utter contempt they had for Bravely Default and its developer, Final Fantasy All The Bravest - it was an embarassing gen.

I blame Wada.
You just proved my post right. They struggled with console FF that caused other console development to suffer as well. And 3rd Birthday was a decent game marred by Toriyama's horrible story. The combat was pretty enjoyable as a portable shooter/action RPG. Otherwise they released plenty of good stuff like Dragon Quest games, Kingdom Hearts BBS, TWEWY, Nier, some FF spin-offs like Dissidia & Theatrhythm, XIV ARR, Bravely Default & Second and plenty more. Even XIII-2 & Lightning Returns aren't totally hopeless as games, mostly just rushed & with yet more shitty Toriyama storytelling.

And lol, what contempt toward Silicon Studios? They've pretty much admitted that Bravely Default & its success almost single-handedly changed the course of the whole company and made them re-evaluate their whole "people really aren't all that interested in JRPGs anymore" stance and to green-light more games in the same somewhat nostalgic vein.

Good. If they want to streamline and put this in line with AC and CC, that's what Nojima and Nomura want to do. They'll still keep some humorous aspects, but i really doubt its gonna be like the original to begin with, which they intend.

Its intentional. Cloud is really sick from mako poisoning, and in the trailer, is fully feeling the effects of...what happened in Crisis core.

It seems like they are really trying to make everything connect

That's what I envision. You see a huge representation of Midgar and other cities in front of you and you can fly over them all, but you 'press x to enter'. I think airship exploration was too important in the original to leave out.

It's so hard to take your arguments seriously with that tag. lol

Re: Final Fantasy Versus VII: This trailer definitely sucked some of the hype away from "we just rendered a rock" XV

Even if this combat was like ff13 minus paradigm shift the gameplay would have been great. I always felt like ff13 combat was the next generation of ATB combat from the old days. But the system they have now looks like a generic kingdom hearts type of garbage.

Luckily - I'm a different person than Nojima and Nomura and I can have different opinions and preferences; the fact that it's their intention to make a game in a specific way doesn't mean I have to like it - I found both AC and CC quite meh, and completely unnecessary.

Am I the only one who found the huge ass sword distracting on Cloud when he was exploring the city?

It was kind of distracting; but it'd look even weirder for it to disappear or shrink when out of combat; like with the original field models. Though they could have made it less reflective - maybe it's something that won't be as much of a problem when you're equipping other weapons.

It's kinda, but not a problem actually because we can change his sword after we leave Midgar.
I wonder about this, actually. The original game made you keep the Buster Sword in your inventory for the entire game. I always assumed Cloud was hauling it around on his back long after he stopped using it.

As someone who routinely beats FFVII (its my favorite game) I have to say that I am really excited for the deviations in gameplay. You see, I loaded up the new FFVII PC port on PS4 last night and it just hit me - I can no longer sit down on the couch and grind for 50 hours. I'm a busy guy with work, grad school, and a baby. I was able to beat Xenoblade on the 3DS but that's only because I have a 45 minute commute to work on the train so I get a good 1:30 of gaming time a day if I could play games on a handheld. JRPGs are just a total chore now on a console. It's hard to describe why, and I know I have heard others echo the same sentiment. A new more action-oriented system would go a long way in holding my attention for a console game. I welcome the change when if you would have asked me this question 3-5 years ago I would have scoffed and demanded the original battle system.

The light reflecting the sword was bit annoying at first but it would be better than not having anything I guess.

So wait..if SE is possibly outsourcing the development of this project how does Nomura direct?.. Are Nomura and Nojima leading a 3rd party team? Doesnt that kind of ruin the exisiting hierarchy of that development studio?

Mmmm like a MAKO radiation exposition ill??

Remember in the original game in the bombing mission he starr hearing voices before planting the bomb... and even in the last trailer he seans to suffer a disease when he runs away before the battle parts of the trailer

Action-RPG and grinding are not mutually exclusive concepts. To be fair, FFVII can be totally completed without much grinding.

Yeah, their "jobs" will make a difference this time, unlike the original game.

Cloud - Warrior?
Barret - Gunner
Tifa - Monk
Cid - Dragoon
Vincent - Other gunner?
Yuffie - Ninja
Cait Sith - Cat?
Aerith - White Mage?
Vincent will be interesting. I wonder if they'll make his transformations more prominent.

Cait Sith is a Gambler and Aerith is most definitely a White Mage.

Just thinking about what the different characters will be able to do with this new system is so exciting. Yuffie disappearing and re-appearing behind enemies? Tifa with a combo system?

I'm interested to see how they pull off Vincent's transformations here - whether they'd be mechanically different, just cosmetic changes with passive stat changes, or singular attacks, like summons. In any case, I really hope they ignore the Dirge of Cerberus designs for them.

Cait is a gambler

Ah ok, that makes sense =p

You know, I'm really curious about this either. His gameplay can turns out really amazing thanks to his limits break.

I doubt it'll be cosmetic changes, we can wait for new attacks for each of his new transformation. Even differences in gameplay for each one of them also.

The ultimate question: Will Vincent still be able to turn into Jason?

And that's your right. I want the devs to make the game they want to make. But its gonna be different, so expect that right off the bat.

You have the original for the original feeling.

How does Yoko Taro direct over platinum games? He has to go to that studio. If Nomura and Nojima are collaborating directly from CC2, that's what they will do.

Normally I agree with this, hell if it was Sakaguchi heading this project I would agree but I have absolutely no faith whatsoever in Nomura

I do.

I have faith in what i have seen so far. So i can't really agree with your opinion. Sakaguchi also has not had anything to do with FF for years and years, so what he has to do with anything matters very little especially for FF7.

Nojima and Nomura as well as Kitase all were apart of FF7 more than Sakaguchi was.

I know we know very little, but is the assumption that there are multiple playable characters or that the player controls Cloud only?

My point is I have dislike almost every game Nomura has been heavily involved with in recent times so I would rather him not being apart of projects I'm interested in anymore, in any event what I want isn't gonna happen so at the very least I'll be happy for you guys.

SE already said FFVIIR didn't use Luminous so unless they plan to go back their disaster engine, Crystal Tools or they develop a new engine (unlikely), they have to use external engine. Only Epic games has Japan studio to support developers there so most people guess it uses UE4

That was a mistranslation in a Tabata interview. They never actually said VIIR wasn't planned to be used with Luminous.

https://forum.beyond3d.com/threads/final-fantasy-xv-xo-ps4.54382/page-20#post-1865907

There is some misunderstanding in overseas interview.

Tabata told famitsu that when he was asked if FFVII remake will be made with Luminous engine by overseas media,
Tabata just said " Luminous is currently used for producing FFXV, and it hasn't been used in other titles, therefore I don't know."

(Overseas media reports "FFVII re is not planned".)

He also states that currently Luminous is still a custom engine for FFXV. They will consider Luminous to be a general-purpose engine after completing FFXV.

And that's your right. I want the devs to make the game they want to make. But its gonna be different, so expect that right off the bat.

You have the original for the original feeling.

I want the devs to make a game that is both faithful to the source material and new at the same time - so I can enjoy it as I enjoyed FFIV remake and Pokémon HG (to make some examples).

Is the game releasing on 7/7/17?
That would be neat. January 31st, 2017 is another possibility considering it would be the twenty year anniversary. But really, they can do whatever they want.
