Final Fantasy 7 Remake: Chunk 1 (CyberConnect2, UE4) Trailer, "PS4 Console Debut"

Looks great! I'm a little concerned about the voice acting.

Barret's VA really impresses me. I absolutely love his work in this trailer.

The rest are okay, but I'm not expecting BioWare/Naughty Dog acclaim here. I'm okay with okay.

Although Wedge's in particular is pretty o_O.

Agreed. It's nice to imagine that maybe- just maybe- this might be the first actual competent major FF development since FFXI.
XII, XIII, XIV, and XV (well, as Versus) all had their share of production problems.

I want to believe in the 'new' Square-Enix. :}

Absolutely, it looks like they are serious about getting their mojo back, now they just need to actually release their games so we can judge that, lol.

I like how FFVII remake completely overshadows FFXV now. Who even cares and as excited for the latter after this.

I do. FFXV's world and characters interest me more. But that doesn't mean I am not excited for FFVII Remake. I can be excited for more than one FF. I don't need to pit one against the other.

FFVII Remake:

GC 2015: Final Fantasy VII Remake won’t run on Luminous Engine

FFXV:

Not official source unfortunately, but I had a conversation with another developer. (sry for the wrong english)

Me: As i know, FFXV use Luminous Engine.

Dev:
No. The FFXV use hybrid engine (LE-UE4). The Square is licensed the UE4, because the Luminous is not working. They tried, but it is not working. The used parts must be included into the UE4. They have a license, which fully edited, altered. Of course, therefore, pay a lot more than others, but this is also an option at the Epic.

No. FFXV uses Luminous Engine. XV does not use UE4 in the slightest.

That's not going to happen. They will make what they want to make. What people consider faithful is completely objective based on the varied nature of the game.

There is literally zero way everyone was going to say this game was 100% faithful regardless of how 1:1 they made it to start.

Not going to happen simply because they probably chose to recycle what they had for FFvXIII and they think this gameplay and style might appeal to the nowadays audience. And it's not objective what is faithful or not - the source material is there and everyone knows it. Also, you're overestimating the power game designers have: by investing millions of dollars in the projects, SQEX is probably dictating almost everything thanks to focus groups, market researches and so on so the final outcome might be more something made to appeal a specific audience than what Nomira and co. Would actually make.

So the battle system seems kind of like Crisis Core with modern visuals, 3-character switching, but still a level of strategy and the materia system? Sign me the shit up.

I'm a little bit worried about how they'll handle the open/overworld; I can only imagine concessions being made here, but we'll see. This has been a super-confident and quick reveal, I'm stunned. Hope they nail my favourite part of the game Meteor reveal--->Tifa televised execution--->Sapphire Weapon chaos---->Escape and slap fight :D

Vincent will be interesting. I wonder if they'll make his transformations more prominent.

Cait Sith is a Gambler and Aerith is most definitely a White Mage.

Just thinking about what the different characters will be able to do with this new system is so exciting. Yuffie disappearing and re-appearing behind enemies? Tifa with a combo system?

Dead Fantasy Tifa finally a possibility.

I think they switched that model of production when Wada left (for good :) )

When you make games to please X, you please no one, they have to just make good games not thinking much about targets audiences and such, and the game's quality will speak for itself and attract new people, i think that's the new SE's bos policy and it's paying off for sure :)

Also, can't they fix Cloud's hair dithering? c_c

And i'm glad they don't use liminuous, from what i've seen in duscae, the HQ is too variable, it looks like a PS2 game when there are too things on the screen, and it looks like the better PS4 game when it's night time or when there are few things on screen lol

Comparing back to the XV 2013 reveal trailer, this trailer is actually really similar and most likely a vertical slice like XV's was. Seems to be pre-recorded footage with game assets and heavy PP (VIIR cutscene segments) that looked considerably better and ran much smoother than the gameplay segments, mixed with some actual gameplay footage that ran at a shoddy framerate.

Does this game share any tech with FFXV? I swear some of the animations remind me alot of Duscae...

This is what I've been saying, yeah.

If this game gets shoved into mid-late 2018 or so there are going to be some folks here asking "what went wrong?"

It looks like this game is definitely not console exclusive. I have a feeling it's going to come to X1 and NX eventually. Especially with Smash getting Cloud, it just seems to point that way.

Well, XV had problems with it's engine. They had some amazing tech, but some shoddy nightmarish engine architecture to deal with. So they have been working on the engine at the same time as the game.

UE4 is in another class as an engine. It is very well refined, very well documented in English and Japanese. I think they will have a far easier time developing this game. Plus they have had all that time in XV to test real-time combat systems. They have FF7 as a reference material. I just don't see it as taking as long.

Snake appeared in SSMB and his next games didn't ever show up on a nintendo console, so...

Square is already choosing to forget about X1 for many of their japanese games, i don't see why this could be any different, it might come out for X1 if microsoft chooses to help with it, but then again it might not.

So what do people make of the battle system?
It looks like theres a bar on the bottom right of the screen. At first i thought it was an ATB gauge that switches characters once it runs out, but it looks more like a limit bar. It fills up as you land hits. And all limit breaks shown seemed to be done when the bar was full.

So yeah I just wonder how character switching will happen. At will or with a timer?

Honestly, I'm beyond happy. It's an amazing time to be alive knowing that we have three major Final Fantasy RPGs on consoles to look forward to. Those two, plus World of Final Fantasy.

It's a lot like back in 1999 or so when SE confirmed Final Fantasy IX, X, and XI all at once.

I sure hope this is more tactical type combat like something like Valkyria Chronicles or Parasite Eve and not some watered down action RPG trash like Kingdom Hearts.

That happened? I guess that makes sense, PS1, PS2, MMO. Man I'd love to watch the reveal of that.

Haven't been following it, but are you telling me Nintendo is actually making a *gasp* technologically competitive system to the big boys again? :p

If this sells like crazy and I think it will...what are the chances of a FFVII-2?

Practically guaranteed.

That's exactly what this was. It shows they're making good progress tho, 2-3 years of dev time if they're not using Luminous. This trailer brought back a lot of memories from childhood, it's like a visual representation of what I thought I was playing.

Yeah, the game looks like a FFXV reskin at points.
They were a couple of contextual animations from FFXV in this trailer.

What were you expecting?

The combat was my main concern. The whole turn-based or not on top of if it would have any influence from XV. I'm open to 7 having a new combat system but I'm still impartial to ATB (hoping it won't be in it but who knows). Overall, it looks pretty incredible and I'm still extremely excited + anxious to see more.

Yeah, I wasn't there for it, but it's true. Those three were announced together as being three totally different games that together marked "the future of the series" in the ways that you described. Can't find any videos but here are some articles from the time reporting on it:

I wouldn't mind a Crisis Core HD version before this comes out.

I think it's surprising that it and Dirge of Cerberus were never on PSN. Maybe a package of the two? That'd be nice.

Snake appeared in SSMB and his next games didn't ever show up on a nintendo console, so...

MGS TTS (a remake) came to the Gamecube though. And 3ds has proven exceptionally capable of catering to high profile Japanese game releases like Yo-kai Watch and Monster Hunter. NX doesn't seem farfetched.

This is... a really good point.

I'm actually still thinking late 2017 is when we'll have this game in our hands. I just... also think it wouldn't be the biggest surprise in the world if it got pushed back a little bit.

Contrast this with some the guesswork from earlier this year, though (2020 lol) and I think we're definitely in a good place right now. I've always held that 20[th Anniversary] VII-teen was just too good not to shoot for, hah.

And add to that the CyberConnect2 collaboration, if it's true.

Just how far into development is this? I've heard everything from "since the day they announced it" all the way to "for over a year before they announced it".
