Well, the characters you're not using have to do something, right? You can probably set gambits or whatever, but I don't doubt they'll be pretty dumb.

I don't want to do that though. I hate the automated approach of gambits. I want to be FORCED to choose the characters actions.

Full party control is the biggest thing we've lost since turn-based fell off, and it's damn frustrating to see a game with unique characters and actions abandon it as well.
 
If we're confessing, I kinda like Dirge of Cerberus.
Yo, the best part about DoC was that I played the entire thing with mouse and keyboard hooked to my PS2. It was crazy :lol
 
Yeah I noticed that too, definitely took it to be an updated versions of the "this isn't just a reactor" flash of white in the early part. It's hard to tell but it seems like they fight the robot on top of the train, so maybe this just precedes the fight like in the main game.
I think the Scorpion boss fight is still just in the reactor; if you watch closely, you can see the transition is just sneaky editing so the scenes flow together well.

If you look at the floor, the differences are pretty apparent. Also the background; you can tell they're inside the reactor when it drops down.

I can't wait to see Cloud's and everybody else's weapons.

I can't wait to see the summons.

I can't wait to see how they'll change the overworld.

I can't wait to see how they'll handle giant boss fights.

Something I noticed in the trailer...

At the moment before he jumps off on to the train, there are some differences in the scene. The main thing is the distortion effect, which suggests Cloud is having some sort of mental thing, but there's another thing too.

Right before the distortion, there's a Shinra grunt who seems to be surprised by Cloud or something (just lip movements, so it's hard to tell), possibly saying Cloud's name. Cloud turns to him, and then there's the distortion. Then when Cloud runs, the Shinra grunt moves towards him, and it actually cuts to him with his helmet lifted up, face visible and hand outstretched to Cloud. (It's hard to see his face in the gif, but in the video itself you can see it's actually fully rendered, not just his jaw.)

I'm wondering... is this a new character? A grunt that recognizes Cloud, and causes Cloud to have a mental spasm because it clashes with his
false memories as Zack
?

My guess is that it is either Kunsel or Luxiere, both soldiers who knew Zack (Crisis Core tie-in)?

Cloud's posture.....holy crazy back pain Batman! Game's lookin great, but Cloud looks fucking ill. Couldn't they put just a little more bulk on a character who's holding such a huge sword? I know it's fantasy and all but come on man. Little more Guts, little less Alucard is all I'm saying. And fix your posture Cloud.....

Hmm don't know how to feel about this. The music brings back the nostalgia, but everything else just feels out of place. Barrett doesn't feel like Barrett and the kingdom hearts combat doesn't feel ff7 to me.

I have a feeling that this is going to end up worse than the original game.
 
The final shot of Cloud's face almost instantly reminded me of Lightning. He's gonna make for a very pretty Cloudette come Don Corneo's scenes. lol

It wasn't a full retranslation. The job was to "clean up" Woolsey's translation and translate the new bonus content. However the translator admitted that he didn't have perfect knowledge of what people liked about the old translation (unlike on FFVI Advance, which he also worked on), so he didn't know what lines should be kept and what should be changed. So a lot of the charm of the SNES version's script was lost. He even changed "Good morning Crono!" even though Square was selling a t-shirt with that line on it as part of the promotion for the game, lol. He also never played Chrono Cross and ended up missing practically all the references to it in the bonus content.

Aside from missing a few lines like "kissed a princess yet?" I think the DS translation is much better than Wolsey's. It certainly reads a lot better.
 
other than the battle system, what i'm interested in is the weapon/materia system
is Materia staying? will they keep every weapon in the original, and thus having to do models/actions for each one?

I wonder what your opinion on the battle system is.

Battle system, I'm open to. More so now only because I really didn't know what to expect.

And how much of the story would you change? You still have to retain the main gist of the story. And while it's too early to know HOW much of the story they've changed, we won't know until the final game is released. Most of the scenes of the bombing mission are pretty damn faithful to the original. Now, I don't thiink EVERY beat will be the same, but I don't think Square will go out of their way to adhere keeping everything in line with realism just because the art style is more realistic(which basically means axing the non-realistic aspects of the original game solely because they don't "fine in" with one's perception of what SHOULD be included in a "realistic looking world"). I know people get hung up on that shit("Oh, it's so unrealistic to see certain fantasy creatures in modern looking worlds..."), but I really don't think that Square sees that as something of a problem worth addressing. Final Fantasy world is a Final Fantasy world. It can have realistic tones of darkness and bleak atmosphere, as well as really fantastical, illogical and bizarre things. I don't see that kinda thing changing anytime soon, regardless of more "realistic art styles".

Nah, it lacked the whimsy in my opinion. Especially for a game that's about time travel and the vibrant characters in that world.

Time Devourer having a different name in CT DS than CC sucked, too.
 
For a game that is years? away I cannot help but be disappointed by the trailer. Graphics look great (not shocked). Presentation looks fantastic (not shocked). Game-play looked rough, sluggish (not shocked).

And it's a completely different game. Totally different genre now. I like my action RPG's as much as the next person, but this seems completely out of character.

Huge fucking bummer.
