Final Fantasy 7 Remake: Chunk 1 (CyberConnect2, UE4) Trailer, "PS4 Console Debut"

They've have been constantly showing some tech demos of XV mentioning that's it's running on the Luminous Engine but I don't know. If what you're saying is true then LE is even a bigger failure than Crystal Tools lol.

BTW, Kingdom Hearts III dropped LE, and use UE4. (and KHIII is a Square Enix games too)

I just realised them going with the FFXV engine and style means no more random encounters.

Getting better and better.

OMG, I can't imagine this scene, with this graphics:

:D :D

Or this:

Is Motomu Toriyama working on anything right now? He can help.

Its not the 15 engine. Luminous is only for 15.

This is apparently UE4, and Tabata confirmed that 7 was not using Luminous only a few months ago, when it would have had to been long since in development.

Only the aesthetics make it similar

Pleasant surprise to see Nomura incorporate his ARPG gameplay onto the remake. I did think I'd be upset to see the turn based modified, but pleasantly surprised to see the man do the title justice! I suppose it's just a sign of the times - with FFXV seemingly heading the main line titles into other directions, it would be expected of a remake also. We still have our handhelds for turn based!

Now bring on the
Cloud vs Sephiroth final encounter. Hot sauce... Knights of the Round as well.

Where's that time machine again?

Do we think this will see a retail release or will it be download only?

Also has anything been said at all about materia? I hope nothing gets cut content wise.

I am one of the biggest FFVII fans IN THE WORLD. And I don't know...
There isn't much trust left for Square-Enix. So I'm gonna wait and see. Yes, I'm gonna try it. I will give it a chance. But I still prefer the Active Time Battle system.

^ IIRC, Jet voiced Barret in the rest of the compilation too

Nope. FF7 Remake is UE4, FFXV is UE4-LE hybrid engine

That's what i said.

Why would a remake on this level not get a retail release!?

Looks better than I expected. At least they didn't jpop up all of the characters like I expected. It retains a similar vibe to the original.

It would be one of the dumbest business decisions of all time if they released this digital only. Son, get ready for some fat CEs and LEs and SEs

In a way I understand, but at the same time there are still things lost in these "evolutions" that I and many other people aren't a fan of. There's something special about full party control, and none of these advancements have done it. It's all either handing things off to an AI or giving a vague means of directing their actions ala paradigms. 12 is closer mechanically if you ignore gambits, but it still doesn't feel like an advancement of ATB and more follows the design mindset of an MMO.

There has to be a way to maintain party control while still advancing things. The last real one we got is ATB 2.0 back with X-2. To me, anything else is a completely different beast.

And what about the amount of options in battle? Even when controlling a single character, no frantic ARPG has or would be able to pull off the many actions you can take with materia, and mapping them to face buttons sure as hell wouldn't be a solution.

These issues need to be addressed or we're going to lose a very special style of play that's been on the decline for over a decade. As you say, the possibilities are endless, and I've thought about many ways things can be advanced without abandoning the things I want. Minor positioning aspects, dynamic camera angles, background fighting that is purely there for aesthetic purposes and not actually affecting the battle, etc. AI controlled characters and less options will never be part of my vision, and it shouldn't be something people that want to preserve a genre should accept either.

That is pretty much saying, you are allowed to change as long as you keep thing the way it is. It's quite selfish (in a way) and limit the possibility of game creation, especially for entertainment industry like this. Dude, it's been 20 years, the whole world has moved on. Even RPG made by japanese nowadays no longer being fully turn-base.

And this change is introduced by (mostly) the same group of people who envision this game in the first place. They use turn base, random encounter, materia, etc, at that point because it fits the game and circumstances at that time. If they change things 20 years later because it's no longer the same environment (market, gamer, hardware, etc) then so be it. It's called creativity.

Materia's a huge part of FF7's plot even outside of the gameplay so I'd be weirded out if they were to remove it.

I remember the rumor that CC2 was co-developing it, did we get confirmation on this or is it all in-house?

They havent even told us what engine it is, let alone who is developing.

We've had to speculate this whole time.

I still say CC2 and its on UE4.

"Prior to its rebranding and full move onto eight-generation consoles, Final Fantasy XV (then called Final Fantasy Versus XIII), used lighting technology from Luminous along with a purpose-built proprietary gameplay engine."
You don't know what you're quoting, do you? Final Fantasy Versus XIII was using a proprietary engine (called Ebony) which had some Luminous tech implemented later on (lighting tech & cutscene stuff, at least), but they've since moved fully to Luminous Engine with FFXV. FFXV's development started with that hybrid Ebony + Luminous engine but they finished moving to Luminous over a year ago, IIRC. I don't know where in hell you are getting your information that FFXV has suddenly abandoned it because they sure as hell don't look to have done so given that they have given several updates about the engine this year & held talks about the current state of Luminous Engine and anything & everything they are doing with it at several conventions directed at that kind of tech talk. So it doesn't sound like any kind of move to UE4 has happened earlier this year, given how much they've been touting the Luminous Engine. Hell, the Episode Duscae demo was officially said to be running on Luminous Engine 1.5 and they've laid a road map to how they'll get to Luminous Engine 2.0 by the time FFXV is released.

BTW, Kingdom Hearts III dropped LE, and use UE4. (and KHIII is a Square Enix games too)
KHIII dropped Luminous Engine mostly because Square Enix needed the Luminous team to focus on helping with FFXV so that they could reach all of their goals with that game while also finishing its development in a reasonable time-frame after the move to PS4 & Xbone, and they didn't have time to help the KHIII team with their woes. The team developing KHIII had been making PS2 & PSP level games for ages so they didn't have experience of more modern game development and would have needed to rely heavily on the Luminous team to help them get to grips with it all & up to speed with PS4 level development. As that fell through & as Epic has really stepped up their support since UE3, they decided to switch to UE4 because Epic could give the support to the Osaka Team that they required immediately. The Osaka team couldn't wait until FFXV is done.

Man. I was speechless yesterday. I'm so, so satisfied with the designs and how perfectly they nailed the atmosphere. It's basically exactly how I imagined an ideal remake. I couldn't be happier. Time for one of my nearly yearly FFVII playthroughs. Haven't done so in 3 years or so. It will be last time before the remake in '17 for me.

They even made Cloud's face look more like what I hoped for! They NAILED Barret, too. I swear, it feels like they read all my posts on GAF and tried to make me happy as much as possible :D

Battle-system looks great. Though, I hope you can set some of the commands on face-buttons. Maybe more like Type-0/LR. I don't want to switch between D-pad and stick too much. Let us use L1/R1 as modifiers + face-buttons to cast spells so you can quickly switch through pre-determined sets (like Schemata in LR). You'd have 3 x 4 = 12 possible spells to choose from, which is only 4 less than the maximum of 16 Materia slots per character in the original, if I'm not wrong. That's not the end of the world. You'd just have to customize your Materia a bit more wisely. That aspect was really fun in LR, too.

I knew Nomura would try to revive Versus, haha. Some of the scenes of Cloud walking through the streets and the battles in the city at night look like they're straight out of the 2011 Versus trailer with Noctis walking and fighting soldiers in Insomnia. I think Nomura did that deliberately as some sort of nod to it.

Given that I've best FF7 7 times, I was pleasantly surprised by what I saw. Pretty much one of the only things that would get my tickled reaction.

I happen to like Steve Burton as Cloud. Did someone say he's a bad actor way earlier? Damn.

General Hospital interest back up ;)
