People tend to forget that FF games are linear as hell for like 60-70% of the game.

Technically, yes, but they felt non-linear because of the wide open feel of the world maps, and I do think that's important. I hope each game covers a continent or two in open world scale. That would fit with their claims of each part being a full game.
