Final Fantasy IV Advance is one hell of a great pickup for portable gaming fans and is an even better acquisition for old-school players that can't get enough of it. No other port of the title has been as thorough or content-packed as this one, and when it's blown up on your Super Game Boy player, don't be surprised if it sucks into its world for much longer than you'd expect. It's only real hitch is that it has been seen several times before and compared to today's more complicated RPGs, is a little too basic. Still, if unadulterated fun and strong storytelling is what you look for in your RPGs, then you can't do much better.

Sadly, the translation isn't quite perfect, which means that Gilbert is still referred to as Edward, and Tellah's "Spoony Bard" line is still in there. Then again, hardcore freaks like me are probably the only ones that will care.

Isn't quite perfect... er, right. I suppose that depends on your perspective. I'd be shocked if those alleged imperfections were due to oversight rather than conscientious decision making considering most western fans of the series know the character as "Edward," and the "Spoony Bard" line is now oddly considered classic. Frankly, I'd be disappointed if they had changed stuff like that.

Gilbert is the gayest name ever

That IGN reviewer loves the penis and isn't hiding it

Stuff like that translation whining makes no sense...the translation is designed to be a mixture of old-school fan service and new-school grammatical correctness. Plus there are references to SA Forums and Real Ultimate Power. Now that's translatin'!

I've never had the joy of playing through FFIV and I assume its mandatory RPGing? Anyhow, is the in-game art any bit as orgasmic/fucking sweet as the cover art?

I enjoyed parts of Advent Rising, and it got better as it went along. I also own its guide by virtue of heroically saving it from some evil entity named "corporate field destroy memo"

Absolutely. FF4 is one of the mandatory SNES RPGs along with FFVI, Chrono Trigger, and Secret of Mana at the very least.

Please inform me what said SA Forums references are.
Somebody says the word "goons."

Only reason I believe JackFrost is because of his OMG INSIDER INFO. Otherwise I'd say he was reading waaaaaaaaaaaay too much into the word choice. It's one of those things that passes right under the radar.

This has nothing to do with "insider info" and everything to do with "basic reading comprehension":

And you know, if they were complaining about that... they should be also be complaining that the Magus sisters aren't named Mag, Dog, and Rag like in the Japanese version.

Makes me wonder how much they'll be complaining if FF6 Advance retains some elements of the original FF3 SNES translation.

What is it with game companies and their total lack of respect for the people who wants to keep the old games sacred and untouchable?
If there was such a public outcry over the changes George Lucas implemented in Star Wars I expect nothing less now. Is there a point to owning games anymore?
The companies just treat games like some piece of code that can be repackaged over and over again.

The least Square-Enix could do is to have a press conference of some kind and apologize to the fans.

This is a vastly improved version, you ninny.

And Jackfrost, "something awful" was a slangish expression before there were SA forums. How exactly is that a SA forum reference?

If you're going to be a joke character, could you at least try to be funny?

SA Forum denizens are called "goons." One or the other by itself wouldn't be a reference, but the two in such close proximity is mighty suspicious.

I'm interested in playing these FF games again, i played them so many years ago and never completed any of them, i used to rent them, so i'm planning on buying final fantasy 1 - 2 dawn of souls , final fantasy tacticts advance along with this one.

FFTA makes me a sad, sad panda

Don't buy it, you're supporting communism :(

Edit:

If you're communist, don't buy it, you're supporting democracy

Ahhh, I figured there must be more to it, and I agree. Probably not a coincidence.

Yeah, this isn't the first FFIVa thread that hahax trolls. Of all the games to choose, too.

FFTA's great! Helps to fill a niche in the portable world too. Not without its problems, but I"ve sunk over 200 hours into the game, and like it loads, flaws and all!

Look, I simply cannot see how anyone can find this okay. (the localization with SA-references)
What can I say, you lack passion.

He's just weird and sad. If you want to play the original version, then drag it out and play it. It's still there. It hasn't degraded. Hell, thanks to emulation, it's gonna be around forever. I just don't see how a version with an improved translation and new gameplay features "hurts" the old one...but then, I'm not insane.

It's not like the line only makes sense as a SA reference. Even missing the joke, his line still made perfect sense within the context of the conversation. You're just looking for another idiotic thing to latch onto for trolling purposes.

Particularly when the old one was by no means a faithful adaptation of the ORIGINAL. He's an idiot.

Saying that FFII is the "original" version of Final Fantasy IV is like saying that "Warriors of the Wind" is the "original" Nausicaa, and that stupid Hayao Miyazaki adding in all those boring scenes with people talking ruined the DVD release.

Saying that FFII is the "original" version of Final Fantasy IV is like saying that nerd nerd nerd nerd nerd nerd nerd nerd nerd nerd nerd nerd nerd nerd nerd nerd nerd nerd nerd nerd nerd nerd nerd nerd nerd nerd nerd nerd nerd nerd.

If you take away our arcane minutae, we nerds have nothing left. :(

Speaking of which, another reference thingy that seems to have unspoken until now is the cats found in the Dark Elf cave being named “Cait Sith.”

Love this game. Its presentation, story and characters.... such a breakthrough at the time.

How could it go from the weak storylines of FFII / FFIII to this? Huge leap.

I'm not really sure how I feel about some of these modern l33t jokes appearing in localizations. I'm 100% for it in comic stuff like Lunar/Grandia/Mario, but in serious tales...hmmmm....I find the references funny but at the same time I think it's not right.

I mean if Vagrant Story was all serious with awesome writing and then suddenly some guy made a joke about GAF...yeah...I dunno if that's a good thing.

Eh, if a game has awesome writing, it usually follows that the in-jokes/humor are similarly awesome in their subtleness. If Sydney was all blah blah blah FALSE RELIGION AM CRY, or Cecil was all WE'RE IN THE CAVE OF MIST AND IT'S FULL OF MIST, then yes, l33t wr1tz0rz am fail.

Item descriptions are the perfect venue for parody and reference, in my opinion.
