Final Fantasy IX-You are not alone, is the greatest set piece in any RPG

I've been saying this for years. FF9 is an s-tier jrpg, 7 and 10 are both overrated after having played in comparison to 9.

On an adjacent note, FF6 is a darling from the 2D era but I've always preferred FF4 and the GOAT Chrono Trigger

Fun fact: I'm playing FF9 for the first time ever. It's my 2nd FF. I don't have much experience in JRPGs.
It's funny how the emotions and motivations seem somewhat simple in FF9, maybe targeted at 15-year-olds. You know, with knight leader Steiner throwing tantrums like a child, Quina the comic relief, Amarant the edgy loner, Eiko and Vivi are actual children, Dagger and Zidane are teenagers.
But the You're Not Alone moment is so mature, beautiful and touching.
I'm 43 years old.

BTW, it's the last part of the game I completed yesterday.

It’s not even in my top five FF games.

Glad you like it though. This game is a B tier FF game overall. We will see if the remake can change my mind as I haven’t played it since release.
At release I wasn't that excited to be honest. It didn't had the impact of 7 or 8 to me.
But later when I replayed it, it easily became my favourite FF. And 3rd favourite jrpg behind Xenogears and Chrono Trigger.

The last good Final Fantasy and still my #1 although Chrono Cross is a close 2nd.

Always nice to see more people shit on VII and X. ESPECIALLY X.

Bought it on release, had a great time. But the combat was slow. This always a bit of a nuisance to me. Its probably the most 'pure' FF game if that makes any sense. It has it all; medieval fantasy setting, a less lifelike art direction, likeable characters and emotional scenes.

FFIX is the last of its kind. I wouldn't expect FF to dumb down from there so much. Who didn't think of a new FF being much bigger and better on PS2 hardware? X was still extremely well done, but it wasn't exactly the next-gen FF I wanted or expected at the time (I expected a more detailed world map and bigger scale into next-gen, a plane you could actually fly etc). XII offered a bigger scale, but also was an aqcuired taste and especially the vanilla game wasn't without its issues. The rest is what it is.

till this day FFVII-VIII and IX feel like they were pushing technology, story telling beyond the capabilities of the Play Station.

I loved when this song kicked in 1st time. Got chills. Just such a dark and moody song. Crunchy bass. 1st vocals in the game I think.
