Final Fantasy VII has aged extremely well

The graphics render the game barely playable.

You people are too much sometimes. You can't enjoy one of the best games ever made because it has some rough edges? The art direction is fantastic in this game. Some of the most recognizable FF character designs are from this game, the backgrounds are incredible, the music is stellar, the battle system is still fun as hell.

But by all means, ignore it because of "the graphics".

Yeah, that's what I said. Keep living in denial.

It hasn't aged, it's the same game. You've aged and the gaming industry has aged.

It's still as beautiful a game as it ever was.

This game has not aged well at all. I spoiled of course but I cant even enjoy it on Vita anymore. Outdated graphics that carry none of the atmosphere anymore and the battlesystem is pretty basic. A remake with FF15 engine would be fine.

Such emotion.

I haven't played it since it first came out, but looking at screens, the character models aren't that bad. I was always a FF7 character model apologist, though.

And yeah, the materia system was the greatest thing ever.

His arms look like paint brushes.

Just remembered one thing that didn't age so well. Those shit minigames everywhere in the game. And there are a lot of them.

I can play it with rose-tinted glasses (and I started with FF before 7 came out), but it's undeniable that the non-pre-rendered graphics are hideous. The gameplay is still great though.

I´ve been playing it on my PSP GO (I suppose I should transfer it to the Vita).

It still looks great. So far, the only terrible part graphics-wise was the snowboarding sequence. I don´t know why they couldn´t make it fluid like the motorcycle part.

But it is two minutes in an 80 hour game. I still feel it is the most fun FF to play.

lol, I didn't question what you said. I was saying you are missing out on one of the best RPGs ever because of your hangup on the graphics. No denial here, just pity.

No I didn't miss out on it, I played it from start to finish. Decent story, great music, shit graphics which became very harsh on the eyes. I wouldn't want anyone to endure the eye strain again, so PC mod is a must.

I never played it until last year when my GF introduced me to it, I think it's amazing. I wonder why we don't see any prerendered backgrounds/camera style like FFVII anymore. I think Bravely Default does though?

Graphics have aged poorly, but the materia system is absolutely rock solid and provides opportunity for more strategy than any other FF game imo. The ability to "create" any type of character takes away from the unique characterization that the other FF's have a bit, but allows for more control over strategy. When it comes to pure gameplay, I still consider this FF at its best.

Only character models need to be changed by combat ones, other than that I agree, FF7 looks good and is as fun to play as it was.

It's one of the best games ever for a reason. The graphics get a lot of hate, but I think the blocky characters are endearing and you never really see that design in other games (possibly for good reasons). The backgrounds of this game are absolutely incredible.

Definitely. I think it's clear that the blocky graphics were trying to be a 3D version of chibi sprites (while looking more tonally serious than, say, FFIII remakes models). It was an experiment with varying levels of success but if you play the game, the animation and humor was a perfect fit for that kind of model.

After replaying the game with a hard mode enabled, it absolutely stands the test of time.

Character models during combat still look great, imo.

Gameplay is still solid as ever. But I feel like the translation/dialogue did not. I replayed FF7 a few months ago and felt the tone of story suffered a bit.

The graphics are what they are. I was never a fan of the Popeye models but the rest is still pretty good.

I've been (slowly) playing through the game over the past two years for the first time.

It's pretty great, even today.

It's weird because FF7 seems to be going through some cycle where a few years ago the idea that it's "overrated" and "aged badly" was dominant and half the stuff said about it from both sides was half-myth and not even true (in terms of the myth that's built around the game some characters are portrayed as having personalities completely contrary to how they are in the game). Now it seems like people are actually properly revisiting the game, rather than the myth the game has become, and positive opinions have become more common again.

Umm I can't play it because it looks so bad. So rose tinted glasses my friend.

Or they just don't give a shit about "bad" graphics (while most of the character models are pretty ass I think a lot of the backgrounds still look great anyway, even if they are let down by the low resolution).

When viewing this game through nostalgia glasses, rare is it that anyone discusses the narrative as a "brilliant feature".

Count me in the group that thinks it still holds up in many respects. It boggles my mind that you guys think the graphics are so bad. The pre-rendered backgrounds are still pretty to look at and the low-poly models actually have aged better than some of it's contemporaries who tried realistic looking models.

The one thing that keeps me from getting far in my replays of it is the frequency of random battles, but that is my taste in games changing (every since I played Morrowind JRPG random battles have been hard to deal with).
