Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 3 Plot Complete, Development Underway

Yoshinori Kitase and Naoki Hamaguchi attended a seminar at the Korean event G-Star 2024, during which the duo explained the challenges the team has had with the Final Fantasy VII Remake project.

Many facets surrounding these games were discussed, though it was also confirmed that the plot for this trilogy’s third and final entry has been completed, and the concepts have been decided. In fact, the development team is already working on the title, though details were not shared.

Still, Hamagauchi emphasizes the use of the Highwind, claiming that they aim to let players fly freely around the world map.

Thanks to Audrey of Aitai Kimochi for sharing this news. For additional comments and details, you can view 4Gamer’s full coverage.

I feel like you'd kinda have hoped that the plot was done back when the trilogy was started... else we're just making it up as we go along? The plus side is I guess we can react to feedback, and holy shit Chadley needs to be nuked off the face of the planet in part 3.

Still, pretty hyped and looking forward to it, the gameplay, and music are amazing in P1 & P2.

I really enjoyed Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade, but all the bloat/pading in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth put me right off of continuing the story. Hopefully the third game won't be like Rebirth.

Calling it now, it'll release in 2H of 2027. We'll get a title drop at next years TGA's.
If they start the development mid 2025, there’s no way they can make the game in just 2 Years, End of 2028 minimum… And we are talking about Square.

I get so close to buying it, but I know for a fact I'll get burnout and I'll stop playing.

To me it's like the AC games. You can do all that side stuff if you want or you can just focus on the main story and move on. That's what I do with all AC games. Just focus on the main story and that's it. Had to do the same with Rebirth cause I knew I would get burnt out otherwise. Plus I knew if I wanted to I could come back and do all the side stuff because apparently it does add to the characters so I'll just consider it some post game DLC when I come back.

As long as it will have versatility pro mode like Rebirth, I will be extremely happy. I just pray the PSSR patch FF7 Remake Integrade

Here comes some two hour final boss fight. That’s the best part of these remakes, seeing all these boss fights play out. We all know they’re going to impress us with the final installment.

"dev team is already working on the game"

They've already started development on the game.

They've confirmed it took them a year to finish the Remake DLC after Remake released. So they made Rebirth in 3 years, which was the most asset-heavy part of the trilogy. I can definitely see them completing this over the next 3 years, provided they aren't switching to UE5.

2027 for the 30th Anniversary of FF7 I'm sure is there target, but if they do switch to UE5 (at this point the decision will have been made) then I think it'll be a late 2028 game.

My PS5 Pro is ready for this. 👀

I'm in the sunk cost fallacy phase with this remake trilogy, so the sooner they finish the third part so I can play it and forget this whole project exists, the better.

I guess with plot perhaps they may also mean the whole “screenplay”. Keep in mind that the game has many more scenes and detailed story bits that need to be fleshed out.
Also additional content / side quests may be included to some extent.

They are switching to UE5. I remember reading this a bit back. I hope they had initial team working on it once Rebirth finished and had full team on the game once DLCs were done.

But with engine upgrade I think it’s going to be late 2027 at best. :(

Also, where the F is the PC version of Rebirth and I really hope SE pulls their head out of their rear and releases 3rd game Day 1 on Steam.

They never confirmed or denied it. Hamaguchi said this back in August :

"We'll have to assess the pros and cons of [Unreal Engine 5], but I think it's possible," he said. "However, I think what our users want most right now is to deliver the final game in the series in a good form as soon as possible. We'll think about it objectively and decide whether changing the environment will accelerate that, or whether it's best to make it all at once as it is."

So the question is, do the benefits of switching to UE5 outweigh the cons of not potentially delivering the trilogy in a timely manner and there not being delays due to the changeover? That's for them to decide I suppose, but switching over from a custom-build of UE4 made just for the Remake Trilogy to UE5 isn't just a case of copy and pasting all of the code across, there's a lot more work involved. Plus, staff will need to familiarize themselves with new procedures, processes etc. The changeover itself might end up costing 6 months to a year, and who's to say it won't be a stuttery mess of a game if they do switch over like a lot of UE5 games right now?

Can't wait! Vincent with the full party and the conclusion to this epic journey, add in some surprising cool twists and it could very well be the best FF game of all times. Rebirth is already up there but even that was a stepping stone to this one.

After the way rebirth ended, they got a lot of explaining and catching up to do when it comes to the plot for part 3. Purists didn't like the timelines crap that they pulled, and the casuals were confused. I am personally interested to see how they wrap this up.

Purists don't like anything at all, that isn't verbatim to the OG though, to be fair. And casuals will probably just watch some youtuber's playthrough. All that's left all the FF enthusiasts and even they have limits.

I think if they did it in two games instead of three it would have made many more people happy, while still giving some room for expanding out, but three was a mistake. Even the actual fans can only take so much. A single game remake without changes would have been pretty criticized too I think, ain't no pleasing everyone here.

IMO they hamstrung this whole project by keeping it exclusive, at first I was on board to day 1 as they release. Forget that. I’ll just wait for the rest to release as a full set for a much better price.
I don’t think I’d have gone this route, if they dropped Rebirth sooner, on PC.
Then, I would have felt a bit compelled to buy the final one on release.

Can't wait to see it not meet SE's expectations.
Sales have declined from Remake to Rebirth, I don't expect Reunion will meet or surpass Rebirth sales which were only around 3 million last we heard

Square Enix are lucky they can keep reusing assets from Remake and Rebirth because at this point they are just completing the trilogy to get it done, they probably have zero expectations it will ever turn a profit overall

I hope they launch a new Highwind mechanical arts along the game, or packed with the deluxe premium etc. edition.
