Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn - Beta Phase 3 Impression: Phase 4 August

All the music and sound I've heard so far are fantastic. I usually get sick of game music after 40 hours or so then I just play with real life music on. ngl, last weekend I played XIV to my own soundtrack of classic FF music : ]

I don't know what happened to my eligibility, but I've never gotten a beta code despite buying 1.0 a year ago. I'm unable to log into my account, and customer service never got back to me on the matter. I also tried registering two other email addresses.

If any kind soul has an extra beta code and wouldn't mind parting with it, .. well that would be just dandy.

Also chiming in to say that I (a) really like the music in the game and (b) think it plays either enough or at appropriate times. I'm one of those people that will play a game for a very long time before deciding I want to play while listening to something else, and I'm entirely happy with how music is handled in the game thus far.

Has GAF collectively picked a server for the non-legacy players? I know Ultros is the go-to for beta, but curious if that'll be the case in retail/phase 4 too.

Speaking of music, it really sucks that we can't turn off the chocobo theme. As much as I like it, I'd really rather hear the BGM of the area I'm currently riding through. I found myself jumping off my chocobo every now and then to check out the music.

for phase 4 and release I believe it will be as like this:

Ultros is the server for players who want a fresh server. (it does not accept legacy players)
Sargatanas is for Legacy AND non-legacy players. (it accepts all players)

Was thinking the same thing. I do like how the music tones down when you stop for a bit though.

At least we have the option of turning off mounted music entirely.

I don't see what the problem is. To be honest, I rarely even notice when the music fades and goes to silence. I only notice the lack of music when it comes back in and I'm pleasantly surprised again and again at how good the OST for this game is. I find it much better than just dropping the music all together until you zone and keeps the music fresh.

I DEFINITELY notice.

I understand what they were going for, but the experience I'm getting is not what you guys are getting, at all. I hear the music clips when I go into a sanctuary, and as soon as I leave one...and that's it. Pure silence and boring ambiance the entire rest of my time in the field, with few exceptions where another track actually kicks in when I move to another area.

It's like Monster Hunter, you hear music for like 20 seconds and the rest is dead air until you fight something. And it sucks, IMO. I just wish they'd put the themes of the area on cycle, where you hear one, then say, 20 seconds of dead air at the most, then another theme from that area plays, repeat.

WoW had a loop music option in the settings. Maybe they'll add it if people ask on the forums?

Personally, I play my own music and turn in game music off.

I do love that the music isnt constantly looping, if just because the ambiance sounds on this game are fantastic and very well done.

Actually if you stay in one area long enough the music comes back and it seems as if it does so at certain times. I was looking at some scenery while on a cliff and as the sun was rising the music gradually swelled until the sun was up and I thought it was a brilliant moment.

Some of my favorite music of all time is from FFXI, can't wait to check out XIV's.

I haven't really been able to play the beta too much because of being gone all last weekend on a trip, but... Does ARR have skill chains? Those were always super fun in FFXI, and iirc, even XIV 1.xx had them at some point (they were less useful/cool than the ones in FFXI, though).

How fast did those Zam keys go yesterday? I thought I would have definitely been able to grab one by the time that I got home, but they were already gone. Oh well, reading the impressions here are giving me more than enough information for the time being, despite making the wait that much harder haha.

Think there might be any more chances in the near future for some more beta keys?

So...this sounds silly, but am I the only one that's annoyed they use a "Fire, Fire 2, Fire 3" naming scheme rather than the classic "Fire, Fira, Firaga" spell naming system? It's not really a big deal but I think they should take every opportunity to pay homage to "real" Final Fantasy.

Or maybe it's something the subclasses learn? Who knows.

In FFXI and 1.x, -Ra and -Ga spells had different functions.

Like, Firaga in XI was the AoE Fire spell, etc.

I actually wish they would return to this and collapse the IIs and IIIs into the original spell. Lots of redundant spells to fill up gamepad hotbars.

Well technically... the older Final Fantasys used a "Fire", "Fire 2", "Fire 3" naming system. The "Fira" and "Firaga" scheme was done much later.

As said already, in FFXI, the -aga spells were AOE.

EDIT: Unless in the Japanese versions, they were always -ra and -aga, but were translated into II and III. That could be it as well, but I'm not sure.

Well... not really redundant ravi, WHM and BLM booth combo their cure 1-3 and Fire1 and 3 based off procs, so it's not redundant :)

Firestarter
Grants a 30% chance that upon casting Fire, your next next Fire III will require no MP and have no casting time.

A little less than 12 hours, I believe.

It starts Friday, 2 AM PST.

its so annoying that it shuts off Sunday morning. I understand its a weekend beta thing, but they could have atleast made it so that it ended at midnight on Sunday since Sat/Sun would be when the largest group of people would hlave time to get in and playtest the beta.

Beta times are suited for JP players. Beta ends on Sunday afternoon for them.

Total Noob over here. I have never played a single FF game. If anyone has a spare pc or ps3 code please let me know . I'd really appreciate it. This games looks really interesting and looks like it could hold me over till my PS4 arrives haha. I also never got to try the whole White Knight Chronicles online exp and this looks similar.

Huh, I randomly got codes for the beta test (I wasn't one of the XIII registers and I only did so on a whim like a day before the last test opened).

So if I am understanding this right, the beta is only online from tomorrow morning to Sunday evening?

Edit: Silly me, didn't realize that the OP was updated for this session too.

-ra and -ga have always been used in Japan, except for FFII where the spells have 16 levels of power and it'd be hard to come up with names for all of them

Yeah, the Japanese versions always used -ra and -ga. They started using -ra and -ga in the English localization from FF8 on and have used them in every remake and re-translation of the older games.

Japanese game runs on Japanese time. =/ (They are 17 hours? ahead PDT if I remember correctly.)

Sweet. Got in the beta, though I don't know why. Maybe because I played FFXI and registered my other SE games? Now I don't have to go to my brother's house to play around with it.

It hasn't been too hard to get into the beta at this point. And a couple of places have even started beta key giveaways.

If I pre-order with amazon, you dont get the code until it ships thus after they charge you

If you don't mind the digital version GMG had it pretty cheap and they give you the code immediately. (They also charge you immediately too lol)
