Final Fantasy XV SPOILER THREAD

I finished it and I enjoyed it for what it was. Around 60 hours and I've done the secret dungeon and all the normal dungeons but not the vault stuff. Done most side quests too.

I liked the world and liked exploring and seeing stuff. I liked the guys and their relationship. I liked Prompto taking pictures and how it factored into the ending and credits, very nice touch. I liked the Regalia and driving about. I like the summons and how they are the most impressive and scary yet.

Don't really like how so much of the story just seems left out. How you need Kingsglaive to get an idea of what is going on at the start and how Luna has the ring but then the game also pretty much ignores the giant, massive demon/old king war that levelled the city. Don't like how characters like the emperor were just nothing and how Ravus just flip flops allegiances in a note.

There is a lot I like about the game though, I think it looks great and some areas are super cool. I like the music and characters (of the ones we have time to get to know). I liked the time skip. Really does feel "rushed" though, like there are just plot threads that are just explained and that is it, stuff told through notes, a lot of telling but not much showing.

Had nice set pieces though. I really think they spent too much time and effort trying to make a massive open world and not enough time working on a story to fit it, or having a plan for a story that didn't fit the open world. Maybe it'd have been better if they didn't scrap and redo the game so many times and instead just stuck with what it was originally? Definitely doesn't feel like 10 years of work.

I don't know. I interpreted it more as them all being with him in spirit, but your interpretation is definitely possible.

Aren't the DLCs taking place after the end of the game?

Pretty sure the DLCs will take place during the game. Like Gladiolus' gets his when he goes off to do "stuff" when you're off getting mythril, Ignis' will have his during the Leviathan stuff where he loses his sight and Prompto will have his when he gets knocked off the train.

All super telegraphed "Character story DLC here" moments.

Though it'd be nice if we saw more of the World of Ruin and got to play as the guys during Noctis' ten year nap time.

The only character I found to look even remotely aged was Noctis. Everyone else just had facial hair

But that is the Japanese way to quickly age someone... Thought it was hilarious.

How does a mere human change the mind of Ashtrays exactly? You'd think they'd know Ardyn's was legit. But nope. King Jelly deceives these upper beings. Okay.

I liked it but I have to wonder if a lot of these reviewers got past chapter 6.

How else would they have all been able to comment on the weird tone shift?

The time skip was confusing to me. Conceptually I like it but, was Noctis asleep for 10 years> That's how I saw it. He was stuck in the crystal that long? Was he just exiled there for that long? There should have been a lot more explanation between Noctis coming back and leaving for insomnia.

I like how he ages and grows just a beard

For all the game's faults, it gave us 30-year-old scene kid Noctis, and I can't hate it for that. God bless.

30 year old Samurai TV drama Noctis is a perfectly suitable husbando tbh, but they can't capitalize on him because spoilers.

Bros died for sure. The monsters wrecked them. You could barely take down one of those things as a party with the help of royal magic. Their purpose was fulfilled when Noctis' was. No wonder he was such a brat at first. He had a fiance and 3 best friends basically assigned to die for and/or with him, whichever came first.

And they don't even use that song!

Too Much > Stand By Me

You're KIDDING me. It's not used in the game???

lol. Honestly lol at this game. I have never been more disappointed with something in my life. The main story in this game is ridiculously embarrassing.

Probably going to be used in one of the DLC "chapters" which i am 99% sure will have horrible gameplay.

After sleeping a night on it, it fucking sucks how they did all of the characters in this dirty.

Regis: okay, he dies right away. Fine, he serves as motivation for Noctis.

Luna: a few cutscenes, but dies once reunited. That sucks.

Ravus: his motivations? Who knows. Barely any screen time then dies who knows how.

Those two old dudes from the empire: one cutscene. Really?

Oracle: not enough screentime to be any more than an enigma. And not a particularly interesting one.

I theorize that one of the old empire dudes (the guy responsible for manufacturing the Magitek stuff) will probably get screen-time in the DLC, since there's a big revelation about him in external media:
He's Prompto's father.

The fact he just disappears from the story after one line in a cutscene is especially suspect, as the other old man at least gets transformed into a monster and you fight it.

I tried playing ARR a while ago but I felt lost because I didn't play the vanilla crappy FFXIV.

Making ARR a sequel to it was a very bad idea.

I don't think it was a bad idea, necessarily. Some people feel lost in the story but having only played a little of the original FFXIV it felt like so much of ARR was for a new player and that the recent history of Eorzea is a nod to people who played 1.0. It also works because it means whatever work they did put into it is not thrown away and totally wasted and its also an interesting chance for backstory.

I thought this at first, but their designs are actually fairly different if you look at them up close. Prompto's face looks older, and his hair is much less "teenager-y," for example. Ignis also got rid of his spiky hair. Gladio was already 25 pre-timeskip, so it makes sense that he doesn't look that much different at 35.

Also, I was looking everywhere for that Ardyn concept art, thank you so much for posting it. Now my post about external information is complete.

I think, kinda like MGSV, gameplay and visuals took a forefront over storytelling and overall coherence.

I love the big open world, the attention to sidequests and post-game content. Visually, the game is amazing. A lot of detail has been put in to creating a beautifully detailed world. Entering Lestallum and Altissia are some of the series designing high points. Also the dungeon feel realistic. Somehting you could find in the real world, in contrast to the usual 'wooden scaffold coal mines' and 'Mystical Castle' stereotypes. A really good job on Square Enix's part and really lifts the standard for JRPG's (Do note that I've missed DA3:I and Witcher 3).

Now for the story, a lot has been told already. I do think it mainly boils down to Square Enix missing the 'Show, don't tell'-mechanic since FFXIII. Can anyone explain the nature of the relationship between Luna and Noctis? I mean, I assume they're lovers. This is never explored thoroughly.

Back when Aerith died, it felt big because we've done so much with her. We went on a Gold Saucer-date. We cross-dressed. We told stories on our youth. I've never 'lived' Lunafreya, so I don't care too much if she dies. It has barely any impact. When Rinoa is kidnapped and stuck in Adele (hurr hurr), it feels big because who the f* dares to touch muh Rinoa. When Freya explains her cold nature, I feel it because I've 'lived' her cold nature. think of Rinoa's dance scene and Tidus' fate at the end of FFX.

I can barely recall any big lasting moments in FFXV because the characters barely got any exposition. Even Ardyn feels hollow. Why not kill Noct at Galdin Quay? He could easily take on the astrals himself, and the ring would not forever stay with Luna anyway. And even if it did, he could just force himself on the throne. Or is there more to his motivation? I mean, even Sephiroth had a big backstory which was explored. Who the heck is Ardyn? Is he Noctis' brother? Uncle? I have no emotional connection to Ardyn at the end, so killing him felt kinda like: meh, he got wat he deserved. killing Ultimecia, Sephiroth, Kuja, Yu Yevon (and Jecht) all felt big.

Also, why was Nyx not at least mentioned in a sidequest? Feels unfair.

tl;dr let me 'live' Luna, Ardyn, Iedolas, Areana or any other major character.

Well the greatest "Final Fantasy" moment of the game for me so far was getting the Regalia F-Type. The moment you take off and finally have full control of this vehicle and you watch the vast world from above (the engine's streaming is impressive as hell) was simply SPECTACULAR.

But on the other hand, it also says a lot about that campaign....

I can take on the Admantoise any time I want, but zi can never get myself to go through that slog of a fight.

Anyways I've done all dungeons, yet that old lady isn't giving me key to higher level dungeons? Wonder why.

Then you try to land it...and find out it was all a lie.

Wanted to post in OT but someone will whine about their clothes lol

IT TOOK ME 8 MINUTES TO REEL THIS IN AND MY LINE WAS 180/2000 WHEN I FINISHED

There's no way XV's story is worse than XIII's. Absolutely nothing in XIII worked. It had an incoherent, confusing plot, almost every single character was terrible, and its "themes" had nothing to say. At worst, XV only suffers from the first of those.

FF XV's story is actually fairly simple but compelling. The main characters are likable and Ardyn is a great villain. The great foundation is there. The big problem was, they completely failed to properly tell that story in the game. There was so much cut out and/or transferred to other media like Kingsglaive and the anime and to the upcoming DLC missions, which I am sure will show us how Ignis got blind, where the f*** Gladio disappeared to and how Prompto ended up in Ardyn's hands and what his connections are to Verstael.
FF XIII story was a convoluted mess, many of the characters unlikable, even insufferable, and the villain was incredibly disappointing but at least that story was told in the game in flashy, pretty cutscenes and walls of text in the archives.
Ultimately both fell flat but at least FFXV had a great foundation and if you read up the story online you are going: Oh, I see, that's actually interesting! instead of WTF?! That's even more convoluted and nonsensical than what I would have guessed.

I thought it'd be best to ask here, rather than skirt a bunch of spoilers in the OT thread. Post-game roaming, is anyone familiar with how to get to Altisia WITHOUT using your EXP? Resting in camps / hotels to call Umbra uses your EXP right?

I wrote a lot so I copied and pasted from the other thread.

So I beat Chapter 9 yesterday and the story turned from bad to one of the worst things I've ever seen in a video game. This is not an exaggeration. FFXV made me appreciate how bad a story in a video game is and that is in large part to context. I think gamers, myself included, often times complain about there's too much explanation or too much plot or too much they're telling us, etc etc. The list goes on. However, this is a much better alternative to what XV has done which is not tell us anything. There is minimal amount of context, things that are explained better in the chapter intro loading screen, and the amount of information relegated to random newspaper headlines or radio transmissions. Who the fuck thought this was okay?

To get into specific detail about Chapter 9 everything below here is end of chapter spoiler territory and beginning of Chapter 10. First off the chapter pretty much starts with Cor whining to Noctis about how he wasn't able to protect Noctis. Yet… Noctis is off to Altissia knowing there's going to be a fight with the empire but he doesn't tag along?.... Like… Lulz? Did someone look through the script. If you're actually sorry why the fuck wouldn't you got to Altissia and you know… actually protect your fucking king? Also the entirety of the chapter is absolute trash. Then we get to the Altissia and shit just gets worse. Immigration process is bad, meeting the prime minister or the president or whatever the fuck role that old lady was bad, then everything gets even worse. Apparently I'm playing FFX but the characters in the game are assholes cuz everyone seems to know what the fuck is going on how this world works but doesn't seem to explain anything at all. Rites and rituals and Oracles? Eh, things happen and apparently Noctis needs it for stuff. Archaean, Hydroaen, etc etc? Terminology being through around? Sure. Relationship with the empire? Just a random expose via a dialogue choice. Oh yeah, there's also the fact that the emperor who is doing everything is really evil, Iedolas, but the game tries to paint the picture that the Empire was something different 10 years ago (maybe not so evil)? Like… This shit is all over the place and NOTHING is explained. There is literally no foundation to care. There is no foundation for anything outside of liking the brotherhood of the 4 main characters.

Then comes to the part I legit said out loud "Am I supposed to fucking care?" Luna gives a speech to the masses (and for fucks sake Square Enix, do some audio mixing and put on better music) which is absolute shit. The dialogue is supposed to be like Harvey Dent levels of speech in The Dark Knight except is absolutely fails because 1.) there is no context for the starscourge (which by the way they still haven't fucking explained minus the prologue lore tutorial) 2.) there is no build up to who Luna is and why we should care about her at all 3.) there is no fucking reason for us to care that Noctis cares about Luna cuz the relationship wasn't there in the game (saying they're betrothed and having Noctis make comments about him liking Luna doesn't count). Then comes the ultimate shitty payoff. Luna gets killed off by Ardyn. You have two problem characters in the same scene and shit goes off and I was like "uhh.. Kay? Lulz? I guess this happened." Ardyn has shown up consistently but nothing is ever explained about him at all. He does his own thing and I guess the emperor is fine with that? Like.. What IS his relationship with his empire. Literally no info. Not even a little bit. But he keeps showing up. Then we have Luna who we are supposed to care about who only made minimal appearances with also little to no info. Ardyn kills Luna and we're supposed to feel bad but we don't cuz who the fuck cares about a random nobody dying. I actually feel bad for the voice actress for the older Luna cuz as it stands now the younger Luna got more lines than older one did LMAO! Shit happens again except Ignis is now blind? Yo. SE, I get you didn't have enough time to do everything which is why you cut stuff out and relegated to DLC like Gladio randomly leaving (which I'm pretty sure was supposed to be a quest with everyone entirely rather than a solo adventure) and Ignis doing something and getting blinded. I'm sure the Prompto stuff is stuff that got cut too. However, if you're cutting that important stuff cuz you can't make it into a gameplay segment due to time constraints then you have to FUCKING SHOW US. Which brings me to a theory. I think the game before it became XV had important storypoints and setpieces already done. Certain things like the entirety of Altissia was probably something they definitely wanted to carry over. That being said it seems like they tried to fit other random plot stuff around it and build this horrible narrative. There was that 4chan rumor back that confirmed everything was true. One of the things was that the story kept changing even towards the end. I firmly believe this was true. There is a staggering lack of cutscenes, lines, story elements, etc. I can see this being one of the reasons why cutscenes simply don't exist. Just.. UGH. Oh yeah, in the beginning of chapter 10 the loading screen tells us that Cor told us there's a royal tomb in Nifelheim. LMAO. Thanks for telling us that in a loading screen?....

Altissia must've been the oldest part of the game and something that carried over from Versus cuz everything looked like absolute crap. The visuals are PS3 levels and everything between a half-baked city and a shitty boss fight tells me that they had no idea what the fuck they wanted to do. They had a cool idea and panicked on how to fit it into the story. Just floating around spamming attack with your Armiger missiles and not being able to dies is not fun. I literally had something on my attack button while I played Granblue Fantasy. Like… holy shit is this bad.

Fuck everything about this game. This is a BAD game. Narratively.

I can take on the Admantoise any time I want, but zi can never get myself to go through that slog of a fight.

Anyways I've done all dungeons, yet that old lady isn't giving me key to higher level dungeons? Wonder why.

Never crashed so far, i dont know whats so hard about it? Slow down gently pull the analog stick down... hit the brakes and you are done.

1. so the official character bio says noctis has the power to foresee people's deaths, but he wasn't able to foresee luna's or his own?

2. the fmv that appears in noctis' dreams (the one where he dropkicks soldiers and falls into an abyss) is never really explained? there was an extension of it where it looked like he was going to attack luna, iirc?

3. did they make the fmv's, change the story, then use the fmv's anyway?

How did you manage to finish the game without even knowing what's the name of the protagonist?

I mean it's there in the very first scene in the game when one starts a new game...cold opening remember ?

Never crashed so far, i dont know whats so hard about it? Slow down gently pull the analog stick down... hit the brakes and you are done.
Try to land it on that little strip before Pitioss dungeon. I can land fairly well at times but at other times nothing would really happen except a bumpy landing (without actually crashing) and it'd be game over because I'm a bit off the road.

It's not really hard to get the character names right

Nocto

Promptus

Gladiolis

Ingus
I thought it was dumb how Gladiator kept getting mad at Nocto. Especially when Ignatius lost his eyesight.

Promptus was a good character throughout tho
