Final Fantasy XV SPOILER THREAD

I'd like to learn about the development cycle of Shimomura's OST. An RPG score of this size would probably take a few years and I remember she was announced as composer like 10 years ago. I wonder when she started and finished it, how long it was sitting in a locked safe somewhere or if she had to go back and rework the score or change things as the game went from Versus to XV. Hopefully there's some interviews with her in the coming weeks if there hasn't been anything yet. Will be cool to read since I've been looking forward to just her music for so long.

The OST aside from a few tracks isn't very memorable, Kingdom Hearts 2 is still her best work imo.

Tracks I liked:

Hunt quests have awesome fight music.

Cape Caim's theme is so good.

Post credits sunrise scene music.

Chocobo Theme.

Somnus.

So the ending... I did like elements of the storyline at parts, but the second half just fell apart for me. Chapter 13 in particular felt like a bad PS2 game where they were still figuring out how to do stealth/action gameplay. Liked the very finale of the game but I was confused by how vague the rules of the universe are.

I mean, we have to kill the bad guy, then we have to get killed so that we can team up with other magic entities to DOUBLE-kill the bad guy? The rules are so ambiguous it felt like they were making them up as they went along. I did however like some of the team bonding at the end of the game.

I posted this in the impressions thread:

I am going to write up my impressions because I feel that this is another bait-and-switch Metal Gear Solid V situation where the game falls apart as it goes along. And reviewers praised that one based off of the first ten hours. I feel the same will happen here.

So if you are on the fence about buying this game, please read the following first. I have basically kept the following basically spoiler-free, but I am gonna mark it with spoiler tags because I know some people are sensitive to this kind of stuff:

ATMOSPHERE: Overall, I liked the open-world areas the best. I wish that they were more varied, but there are some very scenic visuals along the way. I felt distracted by how much of the landscape evoked classic americana: The diners, the classic cars, the vibe of Hammerhead. And the product placement is just super weird. Cup Noodles becomes the focus of a big side-quest for one character. I also wish the world was bigger. The map is about 8 - 10 miles across, total. (That’s based off the distances given in-game when you get in your car)

COMBAT: I found it to be really simplistic compared to turn-based entries in the series. Although I know other people here will argue with me on that. You can easily get through the game by hacking and slashing. I did, for the most part. I was playing the game on normal, not easy, and the main story was a cakewalk. Certainly optional bosses require more finesse and leveling, but overall his was deeply unsatisfying.

STORY: Like I said, I will keep this spoiler-free, but the way the story is told in the game is a complete mess. It feels like there were six writers who were all working independently and never spoke to one another. Major plot points are either unexplained or barely referred to, and when you get to them, it’s like, “Wait, why are we doing this thing again?” The rules of how the universe works are also frustratingly, distractingly vague. As for the bros, by the end of the game they grew on me a little bit, but their dialogue is usually so superficial, repetitive and non-sensical that when they switch to serious mode, it’s almost laughable. No wait, it literally is laughable.

THE BIG THING: Okay, so I have to keep this vague so as not to spoil you on specifics, and if you don’t want to know something about gameplay, stop reading. But the rumors are true: The game basically turns into a super-linear game a la FF13 at a certain point. This was the biggest disappointment to me, and it really shows the seams of the game. It feels like they couldn’t really deliver the entire game as an open world game, and so they were just like, “screw it, let’s just finish this off as a linear action game.” Seriously, it’s my biggest disappointment with this game. It makes me feel like they ran out of time and money to really do this idea justice.

So now you’ve been WARNED. There are some nice elements here, but overall this is a big thumbs-down from me.

I think I beat 10 - 12 within 2 hours. Now at the dreaded 13.

But the linearity is even worse than FFXIII. Its a small train, and then some stupid stealth level.

Why're you keeping your post spoiler free in the spoiler thread?

The story felt like they were badly adapting a well written story. The story had all the potential of being great, but they dumped all of it and only focused on the bro trips and camping.

ngl the road trip feels kind of incongruous with the plot, considering they go from AGH MY DAD'S DEAD to HEYYY LET'S PLAY SOME PINBALLLLLL in 0.1 seconds.

the pinball minigame is stupidly fun tho

Hmm I didn't notice this. Really liked this moment. Well the ending was great and it's the only thing keeping me hating on the story entirely

To summon the Knights of the Round, as he did, Noctis had to sacrifice his life. If you had seen Kingsglaive, you would have understood the rules.

The final fight didn't kill Adryn. He is immortal, remember. Noctis needed to get the help of the Royal Kings or whatever they are called in the game (Knights of Round?) and that required a sacrifice. The same happened with Nyx in Kingsglaive movie.

Ardyn is then killed with the help of the 13 kings which also results in the world of ruins finally ending, bringing light to the world. But at the cost of the death of Noctis and Luna. Although I am not sure of the fate of the 3 bros but since they appear at the end as well, they are also likely dead along with everyone that appears at the end to help Noctis.

Hmm on my phone the subtitles looked like a error.

Ugh, bummer to think your friends die too.

I'm 15 hours in i can't stop facepalming. The game is a mess as a whole. For now, i want to punch in the face to the guy who was in charge of trying to fix the camera, it's horrible.

The dog with the notepad is OP.

1. Chapter 3. You need to do the Duscae quest with the Dead Eye. Go to Wiz Chocobo Post to start it.
2. Average play time is around 25 to 30 for most if you ignore majority of the side content. More than that if you try to do as much as possible.

So I'll take it that the Chocobos are not far off for me.

I'll do some of the side stuff so probably a few hours more than thirty. Is the game open ended as in I can go back and do side missions after I beat it?

Oh and can I ever drive the Regalia? Declined in the beginning because in my experience the driving in games where it's not a focus is terrible (LA Noire flashbacks).

I refuse to believe the bros are dead .. nope, they're not :)
How do you explain their appearance at the end?

You can always return back to the open world at whatever point you desire aside from a certain story related sequence later in the game. There is also post-game stuff that is unlocked once we beat the game.

You also manually drive Regalia starting chapter 3.

They're dead? I thought it was one of those bullshit power of friendship moments in JRPGs. It didn't cross my mind that they might have actually died.

Fuck that makes that camping scene even more sadder :"(

Also, why the hell there is Stealth sections in this game, it's an RPG goddamn.
It is not forced at all. It is just there as an option. Stupid section and all but certainly not 'Stealth' contrary to what others say.

I know.

'Titanic' scene followed by camping scene. Emotions at their peak T_T

Chapter 3 seems to unlock everything that I desire.

Thanks.

Who the fuck greenlit the Leviathan fight? Its even more terrible to do yourself than to watch on stream.

The first part makes no sense, apparently you just have to yolo hit him a few times. The second part is bash attack to win and succeed at certain QTE. Maybe everyone is doing this wrong, but it takes like 10 minutes to beat this bitch.

I kind of miss the open world. I grew used to it. The story is garbage anyway.

This was such a huge disappointment. They should have consulted Platinum on how to to giant boss fights right.

How do you explain their appearance at the end?

A memory Noctis is having before he dies? I honestly can't take it if Prompto did die, its too much for me to bear and I am already sad that Noctis is gone :<

I know right? I want to believe that it's a bullshit power of friendship moment than believe they actually bit the dust, too cruel Tabata, too cruel.

Are they dead now or not? SolidSora(was that the name?) said they weren't back when people brought it up during the ending stream.
I'm confused. To me it looked like they died which is why I made a comment about how the ending had the missed opportunity of hammering the bro theme home.

I am just saying that it was left ambigious but the hints about them being dead are strong. They appear at the end in the after life or whatever the hell it was, so yeh, it can't be simply memories.

Jesus christ does 13 even end? That train was a metaphor for the fucking trainwreck this game becomes.

Its not hard, its just so fucking repetitive and weak. How did this even pass play testing?

Sora was just saying the bros werent dead because it was hard to tell and they don't actually die ons creen.

But i think its obvious even just watching streams that they died off screen. They sacrificed themselves to hold back the monsters so Noctis could absorb the previous 13 Kings in the throne room, that's why they had a touching goodbye beforehand. Its a common drama tactic of most media.

Yeah thanks guy, I thought so too but was thrown off cause he/she seemed so adamant about it. Good to know I didn't hallucinate their "deaths". :-x

The classic cinema rule of "they didn't die if we didn't see it" really doesn't apply to this game, because like, 95% of the deaths in this game are offscreen...

I just hope XV is his last FF, give him a new IP the guy has potential but he's just not FF material.

Tabata did say his next project is a new IP. I hope it goes well for him, no doubt in my mind in his perfect world he never would have had to touch Nomura's baby if he had a real choice.

Game is a failure if you need to see some shitty CGI movie to understand it.

Ummm... This is explained the same and clearly by the Bahamut in the game. He basically tells Noctis that he will have to sacrifice his life. Ardyn is also revealed to be an immortal god who has scary powers.

I am saying this also alludes to what was witnessed in Kingsglaive, where Nyx had to sacrifice his life.

First you need to see a movie then it's fine since it's actually explained perfectly in-game.

This plot doesn't sound much better in execution than XIII.
