Yes, you saved the world from the plague, but it seems to me that the gods and the Crystal are not exactly benign entities. At least not completely.

Aye, I really found that Shakespeare quote interesting and wanted to see how they'd tie it to the game's themes. With Ardyn and the gods it does somewhat line up, though I do wonder how else they sought to express this moral ambiguity early on.

Maybe if the game did a better job of telling his story instead of forcing people to hash it out on message boards, he'd be better.

Cauis is a FAR more interesting tragic villain.
 
I think people are downplaying ifrit's role in this. His betrayal triggered a snowball effect that created the events of the game. Had he been compliant with the six, Ardyn would not have absorbed the starscourge ... which would eventually corrupt him.

It's honestly more because the game downplays him. I didn't have a clue Ifrit had a larger purpose until after I beat the game and started to read this thread.

The ending to XIII-2 did give me a renewed sympathy for him, it was pretty well-done imo.

EDIT: The angst was real af throughout though yes.

You don't understand just how much I agree with this.
But in his current incarnation he's still pretty damn good all things considered.

I thought from what I learned of Ardyn in the game itself that it made him pretty tragic. I already had this feeling right after beating the game.

The fact that so many of us are here trying to piece it all together is a testament to how good the story could have been based on what we know.

The thirst is real.

I think it's been quite awhile since we have gotten a great, compelling villian to faun over in video games.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Honestly, I understood pretty much everything about Ardyn during my playthrough only. :)
 
Just finished the game. Man, what a roller coaster.

The game went downhill after chapter 9. Like, seriously, I've spent over 30 hours to meet Luna, and I can't even ride a gondola with her. Wtf Tabata!

Anyway, the last chapter is really great. And the implementation of snap shots is genius, it really brings the feel of a road trip. I legit teared up when I reviewed all the photos before the last boss.

Yeah I'm currently reading about Ardyn and people's opinion on him, I'm interested in your opinion Ishida because most of the time and specially about this game I found myself agreeing with you, so much that sometimes when I was about to post something related to this game I'd found that you already posted something similar so I'd end up not posting at all lol.

It seem I was confused about some things, I thought Ardyn was a king that did something to the healer and that's why he was cursed, but apparently Ardyn was the King AND the healer and he was cursed by the crystal? or one of the past Kings?
Also I don't understand why it took so long for him to take revenge, or why it seemed like he hated Noctis specifically when supposedly his grudge was against the whole Lucis bloodline, wouldn't he want to kill Regis himself for example?

Other thing I maybe missed is the origin of the Starscourge/plague of the stars, and can the plague come back again? like in thousands of years after the ending, because if it can with the Lucis line finished how would they deal with that?

All in all I love the game but the story disappointed me, I'll be sure to play it again from start to finish to see what I missed, but I'll do it until they patch a New Game + and add all the stuff they already announced, until then I'll be busy with the postgame content.

I didn't tear up, but I did reflect on my journey with the bros. Picking a picture was solid execution on their part. The process of having to choose just 1 picture was more meaningful than the picture I chose, I feel.
 
This is why I really hope the story is fixed and completed post launch. Because it has the potential to be amazing. I'm working on a thread about it right now but I'm trying to gather all my thoughts concisely first.

I'm sure someone more knowledgeable can answer better but I'd like to try and get corrected so my understanding gets better

From what I understood, he was ardyn lucis caelum, but wasn't the king. The gods chose him to deal with the starscourge. By the time it was his time to finally die, the gods decided he had absorbed too much and was too corrupt to actually die or something.

There was a king(not him) who was chosen by the Crystal who decided he was a bad guy and he was cast out, which is when he changed his name to izunia from lucis caelum. Since he's not allowed to die, he's apparently immortal and spends 2000 years waiting for his chance

Noctis specifically is the chosen one to end the darkness. I'm assuming this is prophesied since Lunafreya even said she's going to be the Oracle for the chosen king. His death wasn't known to prophecy until he spoke to the old kings I believe

Him killing Regis wouldnt have achieved his end goal of finally dying

When I first got to the end boss of FFXIII, the only thought I had was how badly I wanted everybody to die.

FFXV was the opposite, I wanted nobody to die.

:(

Fang was barely a character. She's hot, that's about it.
 
I remember thinking how ballsy the ending of XIII was when the cinematic had just started everyone was turned to crystal... but then My Hands started playing.. and everyone was back. And then they decided to scrap and undo the entire ending with XIII-2.
 
Ahh don't even remind me of Genesis. That guy was obnoxious. I disregard everything post PS1 FF7.

I wonder how I hate more, Genesis or Lightning. That's a toughie.
 
Really glad I have all you plot sleuths to get all the story/character/narrative puzzle pieces and fit them together for me in lieu of the game/square enix.
 
It's a reasonable assumption. My head canon is that they survived and what was projected was more of a imagery of his friends giving him support. Mainly because the bros survived 10 years fighting Daemons separately, I can't believe they would just die in a few minutes of fighting Daemons.

That's true of the whole plot, really.

The elements were there to make a truly wonderful story. Unfortunately, SE fucked up the execution, especially in the second half.

Umbra couldn't come fast enough after I beat the game.

They survived the Daemons for 10 years because they had the power of the Luci ring. When Noctis dies, the ring powers are gone and so are the bros' weapons.

Huh... No matter how well told games are. Forums are ALWAYS filled with people dissecting, putting together, analyzing and theorizing plot points.

People discussing the plot and speculating on this game is not a weird event.
