Final Fantasy XV SPOILER THREAD

I just did the regalia headlights quest where you have to go through that dungeon...

That was truly awful and an example of some of the shit that SE did in this game that really pisses me off. Every time when I'm having a great time with the game, something comes up to spoil that.

My issues wasn't in the difficulty or all the confusing multiple paths. I was fine with that. My anger is directed at that fucking stupid ass jumping that you need to get to the other side. I'm glad that I for some reason decided to look at a guide for some reason (I haven't used one on any of the other dungeons yet).

From there I knew that I had to use a weapon attack to make the jump...

The problem for me was that you had to get lucky on the timing of hitting the attack button because you can't go too early or too late. Not to mention, I'm pretty there are weapons you try to use and NEVER be able to make the jump with. I had to repeat this jump over 25 times and I wasted way too time doing this and now I don't even feel like playing anymore.

Bonus: I also hated how the game automatically had you leap off the railing each time if you barely got close to it causing you to descend to the next floor. That's some fucking stupid shit.

Just finished, I did a whole lot of 180s on this game while playing it... Started strong and really liked it... started losing steam as I didn't understand the story... started grinding the open world and liked it a lot again... got to Altissia and got bored decided to mainline through... Archean/Leviathan is hot garbage...hated the linear section of the game... almost stopped playing in Chapter 13... loved how long the fight with Ravus takes because the music is so great... loved the 10 year time gap and returning to the world in ruins... went back to the open world got way overleveled and marched into Insomnia like a boss a took my damn throne back.

Being overleveled really works narratively, I think.

It's a disjointed mess, but everything clicks with me in this game. I don't get why, but I absolutely loved it.

Largely, I think the game feels less like something with a bunch of stuff cut, bit more like what we got was a bunch of stuff cut out of something else and hastily glued together.

I did the entire sewer without ever jump-attacking. What.

It sounds like you basically (unintentionally?) sequence-broke some gating.

Yeah you were just doing it wrong the whole time lol. There's no place that requires trick jumping in that dungeon.
 
I actually enjoyed the Headlights dungeon. It was surprisingly old school in it's design and I was even more surprised that I got to fight
Jormungand
at the end too. Did not expect that at all.

I didn't hate Chapter 13 but I did find it mostly boring, unfortunately. I think 13's real problem is a conceptual one. So much of the chapter is trying to make Noctis feel powerless without friends, but Noct is far from that.

Even with normal weapons and magic Noctis alone is a force to be reckoned with. Stripped of all that he's still nigh untouchable and has the favor of gods. The schism between the narrative reality of game mechanics and the reality the devs wanted players to feel is then exacerbated by him gaining access to some of his most powerful abilities in the ring. Chapter 13 should have been the opposite of what it is.

The Regalia should have still been destroyed. Prompto should still be captive. Ignis and Gladio should have been in more direct peril and instead of Noct losing all his abilities Ignis and Gladio should have been the only ones left powerless. It should have been made much clearer that Ignis and Gladio are cut off, surrounded by foes, completely unable to defend themselves or fight back, and desperately trying to remain undetected. Thus Noct finally puts on the ring not because he's powerless but because his friends need him now more than ever. We've already seen what the friends are willing to do for Noctis, now we see what he's willing to do for them. The rest of the chapter should have been Noct going on a one-man rampage with all his tools available to find and rescue his friends in time.

It should have been the first time he really acts and fights like a king, reinforcing what his friends mean to him and building up to his messianic return from the crystal and apocalyptically powerful showdown with Ardyn. If you look at what players mechanically end up doing in Chapter 13 it basically already is this. But if the developers had worked with their mechanics instead of against them and framed the whole chapter in this more empowering way they could have avoided the temptation of forced stealth, let the player have more fun by being challenged with full breadth of the combat system, and achieved all of the same narrative beats more effectively and with more natural agreement from the player.

Ardyn's been alive for what, 2,000 years? Not that farfetched to think he could rise up the ranks to become Chancellor.

General Glauca still makes no fucking sense though.

Yes but how did no one know he was basically the Jesus of XV's world and also a former King of Lucis? I'm sure paintings/portraits and whatnot existed even in his time? It doesn't make sense to me that he was alive and kicking for over 2000 years and yet absolutely no one caught on that he's, in fact, Ardyn Lucis Caelum.

All of the paintings must have portrayed Ardyn Lucis Caelum as a black guy. After he stays out of sight for a couple generations, boom, he's home free.

He says he was erased from history which makes sense. I'm sure there are many influencial people that made huge contributions to the world that we know.nothing about. Additionally, the one that took the title Lucis Caelum might have also had those deeds attributed to him after casting Ardyn out.

as fantastical as the world is i don't think anybody could've "caught on" much less entertained the notion he was a 2000 year old immortal exiled from heaven, or whatever the ffxv equivalent is

in FFVI the empire overlooked a certifiably insane guy in clown shoes so i guess this one wasn't a stretch for me :P

That's a point, though - 2000 years is a hell of a long time to maintain a representation of someone's likeness close enough to recognize them walking around. Think about it, lets say you ran into Napoleon tomorrow - would you recognize him? Even if you were a historian and had a painting of his portrait with you, at best you might say "Hey, anyone tell you you look like Napoleon?" unless he was wearing the classic uniform with one medal people generally think of (and Ardyn is wearing scruffy modernish clothes that people don't comment on, so it's not likely the same clothes he wore 2000 years ago). And that's assuming there's a good portrait or likeness of the guy - we don't know what Jesus looked like, it's most likely nothing like the pictures we see today. Same with Ardyn, he doesn't look like the picture of the king on the book.

Of course, maybe the emperor of Niffleheim knew who he was...

In Chapter 14 if you click on the paintings in the lobby Noctis explicitly mentions that Ardyn should be a part of them but isn't. And after the final boss battle Ardyn again explicitly mentions being erased from history "once more"

Ardyn was erased from the history books by the gods, nobody knows who he is because the historical information is straight up gone.

XV's story has a metric ton of problems, but nobody catching on about Ardyn's origin isn't one of them, there is an explanation directly in game

Yeah, that was my favorite dungeon in the game, it felt like an old-school RPG dungeon with some good exploration. I just did the full dungeon yesterday, there's no place you have to do any weird jump warping (and the headlights actually are fairly close to the beginning if that's all you want to do, as long as you don't slide down a place you shouldn't). There were a couple water slides where you could hold to the side as you fell to reach an optional area, or to get someplace early, but it wasn't required to get to the headlights or reach the boss in the depths.

I think the thing is that Ardyn was part of the empire for 30 years and no one questioned that this dude was very blatantly not aging. Would've been neat to find a data entry in the hallway chapter about at least one scientist suspecting that something was up with the dude. Or hell even make the plot that Ardyn was possessing the emperor since the dude sounds so utterly bored and disinterested at all times.
 
When I first got to Ardyn revealing his identity I instantly thought of the few times when the Cosmogony books mentioned a man healing the planet and receiving a blessing from the gods and immediately assumed he was that man. It looks like that was the case, but the other king ended up kind of taking the credit and going down in history as the savior instead.

And yeah, the sewer dungeon I felt was the best-designed dungeon in the game. A big maze of hallways and multiple levels that you eventually figure out the layout for as you go through it

At the time I was playing, I was doing a ton of running around and eventually it lead me to the first ladder that you could descend down from. At this point had no idea where to go and wondered if I needed to jump across to the other platform. Therefore, I decided to check and I found two separate guides online telling me to jump across using the attack in midair to reach there. After failing a bunch of times, I went back to check and another guide explained that I needed to use this same method...

Well, I finished reading this thread. Took me a while but it helped me deal with my feelings towards the game (not all of them, mind) - I've written some initial thoughts before elsewhere

Not my favorite FF and probably counted among the least favorite. I said I'd come back to Plat this once all the DLC is in place, hoping for a more cohesive product because I hoped, nay prayed, that the additional DLC would just fit cohesively into the main story. But now, it's starting to sound like something you'd pick out of the main menu ala

Yeeeesh. Much like the Type-F, you couldn't stick the landing, Tabata. Well, at least Stormblood is coming this year and the next FF is guaranteed to be more focused than this.

Still, gotta say --- the "Off my throne, Jester" is probably among my favorite lines in a JRPG ever. A more subdued JRPG focused on realpolitiks™ would've done it far more justice.

p.s the much deserved piling on Gladio was very much appreciated.

Bit late on the dungeon talk but I see Insomnia as the FFXII Final Dungeon
Sky Fortress Bahamut
in that it's a smaller dungeon that hosts the final bosses and some enemies.

Obviously it wasn't meant to be explorable. Most of the outer parts of the city are 2D facades facing the center of the city.
That wasn't what I meant though. I meant, they created this whole amazing universe with these amazing metropolises like Insomnia, Altissia and Gralea or regions like Cartanica, Solheim and Tenebrae and they even modelled big parts of these (even if in low quality) but none of that is really in the game. Well, it actually is but they just don't show us. That's imo a huge waste of effort and time.
 
Getting the Platinum trophy tonight, only one missing is the lvl 10 photography skill.

My second platinum ever, next to Second Son, I'm glad this one is FF. :)

After that I'll finally be at peace with the game until the DLC comes out.

It's looking to be my first platinum game! I have final royal weapon, fishing skill and Big 'Toise to do and I can't wait for the DLC and Carnival.
 
Just curious. Entering the palace just prior to fighting Ardyn the music sounded very similar if not exactly the same as a song from Soul Sacrifice. Did anyone else bring this up and am I wrong?
 
Level 10 Photography was the first level 10 I got lol, I guess I spent a lot of time camping.

Right now I'm only missing 2 trophies but I probably won't get either of them: Level 10 fishing skill (currently at level 3 at nearly 100 hours of playtime lol) and killing the Adamantoise.

Fishing Skill lvl 10 is quite easy to get though, I was lvl 3 as well when I started to get on it. Just get the best reel in Altissia's Colosseum and the rod that costs something like 12000 gils and you're up to catch some fishes pretty easily.

You can always to do quests to have the best rod as well but that's more if you want to complete the fish archives in your beastiary. Me and a friend did a quest last night where the fish was so big that we needed all four guys to get it out! :lol

You don't have to camp for Prompto to take pictures, just need to walk around. I camped maybe 5 times in the whole game outside of when I tried to max out Cooking at the end, as from Chapter 3 onwards I was always saving up EXP in huge chunks.

You know, I thought I'd hate fishing, which I never bothered with in games, but somehow it clicked for me here during the Navyth quest-line.

Adamantoise wasn't hard at all. I don't think you can even die. Just 40 minutes of slashing/warping away after eating the food that raises the critical hit-rate. Equip a strong greatsword or those Zwill Crossblades. Put on a podcast in the background or something.

This is something you were meant to piece together from the notes in the laboratory, and so i guess alot of people missed it.

MTs are created from daemons, which are created from scourge infected humans.

Nifelhiem has an army of MTs, which means they need alot of human hosts to create their army. So to fulfil their needs, their government greenlit the use of clones to be used as the hosts. (This is why Ardyn tries to guilt trip Noctis about killing them. They call them "Empties" because they supposedly have no soul, but they're born from humans.)

Prompto isn't a machine, or an MT, clearly he's a regular person. He was just likely born (as a clone) with the intention of being an MT, but somehow escaped that fate.

It's a big deal to Prompto because he's just a self-conscious guy. But it was of absolutely no consequence to anyone else, because it really didn't matter. It just means he has some kind of plot-convenient ID chip on his wrist.

Yeah, all the stuff about the daemons created by the empire coming from cloned humans I understood, I was just unsure on how Prompto specifically fit into it all, whether he was one of the clones (apparently not if Vestrael was his father) or just a regular human in some way related to the MTs

Apparently in late January (I was just thinking, what if it coincides with the FF 30th Anniversary event on Jan 31st? Let's get hype!). Voice-over work for the English version is done already according to Noctis' VA, Ray Chase. And he also said a few times how funny it would be.

From his recent AMA:
  • DLCs are looking amazing! We recorded for the Holiday DLC and there are some lines in there that are maybe the funniest things I've ever had the chance to say.​

It does seem like some of the localizations didn't get updated with every rewrite. So for example, the portuguese version calls Bahamut "the Aetherean". No reference to "Draconian" in the entire game.

I don't think Niflheim people are born with the thing he uses to open the door, though. Plus the whole wanting to hear that he's real from Noctis.

The guide says that Verstael is his biological father, so he'll probably be the antagonist of Prompto's DLC.
 
I can't reconcile the chubby grade school "I wanna get in shape" Prompto from Brotherhood with the backstory of being ashamed about being a Niflheim MT clone.

Those were my last two as well. The fishing one is a pain in the ass. To make it much easier get the best reel from betting at the coliseum in Altissia. The adamantoise is an easy but boring fight.

He was adopted by the Argentums when he was 1 year old, it's likely that he didn't learn about his true origins until he was older than in Brotherhood.

Real world equivalent would be if Jesus's brother Cletus was the one who did all the miracles and stuff, then Jesus decided to steal his identity for fame, then the people who wrote the Bible went along with it. Of course you wouldn't know who Cletus was 2000 years later.

Ardyn is basically Jesus + Lucifer. He was to be the "king of kings", traveled around to heal the sick and cast out demons, but also fell out of favor with the higher power and was cast down from his place, becoming a lord of demons. Not doubt this was intentional, given "Lucifer" means "lighter-bearer". Kinda really dig this symbolism, and would've loved had they delved MORE into Ardyn's backstory (as in, actual flashbacks). They could've hinted at something when Ardyn stays with you before the trek to the Disc, maybe have Noctis have a vague dream about Ardyn's past, but not knowing what it meant at the time.
