First Horizon review [Engadget]

I dunno. Maybe if you don't repeat the same tired shite that's been trotted out umpteen times you get better responses. The discussion over the human AI, for example or the lack if lock-on for melee - both areas that there's actually been some good discussion.

Coming in with a 3 line 'Hur dur Far Cry ubi towers' post, you're gonna get dogpiled because it's shitposting at this point.
Or even worse lol Guerrilla

"She's as clever as Hermione Granger, as tough as Lara Croft and better with a bow than Katniss Everdeen -- and she's the reason I fell in love with Horizon Zero Dawn."

What an awkward way to close. Naming literally the most obvious names.
I think the problem is that it's just a silly thing to say. "You know these beloved, strong female characters? She's better than all of them! COMBINED!"

I think the reviewer liked Aloy a little too much.

I agree with the other poster above that this review is useless. Reviewer fished about her feelings and about how pretty the landscape, the setting and the animals were like.

There was virtually nothing talking about the actual story/storytelling, characters beside Alloy, RPG systems (beside that there were so complex :P), or gameplay.

This was no bette then a preview or a hype piece. The only possible useful information was that the game was about 30 hours long and even then it's unclear on what difficulty, was that completing most side quests or just mostly main story, etc...

Edit: Forgot to add that reviewer mentioned she never plays open world games or really RPGs and it shows. She just discovered that those games are interesting and gushing about that.

Except she actually only says she's better than one of them?

All early copies of games are coated with a special neurotoxin that diminishes the brain's ability to criticize. This is a well known fact.

No but post purchase behavior is a well documented part of consumer psychology. You should look at it.

It explains a lot why we (or a big part of us) defend some games more than others. That(s because we enjoyed them of course but it's also because having the appropriate feedback from gaming community regarding our recent (or upcoming) purchase is something we are looking for.

Many of people preordering are more than happy (even if not admitting it, it's there. At different levels of course but it's there... else we wouldn't even post in these threads) to have a "go" from GAF or some sites.

Except she actually only says she's better than one of them?

It's a bad, meaningless sentence. Reminds me of:

"My daddy's SMARTER than Einstein, STRONGER than Hercules and lights a fire with a SNAP of his fingers. Are you as good as my daddy, Mister?"

Aloy is probably fine. But saying she has all the skills of multiple great protagonists is dumb and hopefully reductive. Perfect protagonists are boring and terrible, and gaming already has way too many of them.

If Aloy is perfect, then why do we care?

Pshh, Aloy wish she could be like the Gravity Queen lol
...Devoid of character?
Sorry, I couldn't help myself :X

No, she says that they never hold her interest long enough to complete them, not that she doesn't/hasn't played open world games before.

ok? It's Engadget - not a hardcore gaming site

So glad to hear about the narrative and our lovely protagonist in this review. I only want the story and characterization to live up to the hype. Never doubted the combat. Always looked great and satisfying.

2017 altogether is a bad year for Sony haters. If I ever wanted to take a break from gaming I'd go back to MS.

jk

not jk

This one gets extra attention because the niche Japanese games don't really matter, but this is a Western AAA so it matters a lot more.
People actually think this way.

1) She says she does play open world games, and even likes them, but that she hasnt stuck with them because the length and time investment is daunting
2) Your comments are built on the foundation that only one kind of review, one kind of lens and approach is the only one that matters. And if it doesn't line up with that, it's "useless".

I mean, that's not what the sentence says at all. It says she loves the character because Aloy shares characterics with the three named, not that Aloy's better than all of them

It has been in the top 10 for a while and now top 5 and #1 game over a week before launch. And this is without critical acclaim yet. It clearly has major mainstream appeal.

This may be one of the biggest 2017 game. Nice that it's a new franchise, I'm hoping to see a few new interesting things in it when reading first gaffers impressions and then I'll bite.

I was hesitating but 49€ is really tempting (still not preordering but this is a good sign the game may be available for this price if you search a little even after launch)

Those looking for gameplay impressions why not take a look at the spoiler free early impressions thread? There are also comments about the story beats too

Where is it in the "best sellers of 2017"? Can't access it on my phone. I know in the UK its definitely in top 10.

Edit - 14th but in terms of games it's only behind Zelda and resi 7, not looking too bad.

"best sellers of 2017" would appear in 2018

LOL I had to look up the Harry Potter character and the Hunger Games person. Don't watch, read, or care about certain tweenage things I guess. I found the review to be pretty decent and well-written.

Not every review has to shy away from abstract expression even in videogames. The game made an imprint on her. She is trying to describe what it means to her. It's fine.

I can't believe what I'm reading.

The review is useless though. What have we learned from it? The game world is about mixture of sci-fi and fantasy, Alloy is cool and the game is about 30 hours long. The first two were already apparent from previews so I guess that leaves the game length for which we have no context.

"See, Horizon is not my typical kind of game. I'm generally drawn to experiences I can play in bursts, like League of Legends, TowerFall, Neko Atsume or Overwatch, and I've never been tempted to play all the way through massive, open-world role-playing games like Dragon Age, Skyrim or The Witcher"

Why the hell would you give a review of Horizon to person like that, lol Engadget....

Why not? Gives a different perspective.

I've made the mistake of arguing with Xbone fanboys on Twitter a few times (the sort who have the M Scorpio symbol all over their name and profile), and they absolutely do think this way. It's so fucking maddening.

I gotta say something these Horizon threads are getting really annoying and it's not cause people are saying something you see as negative, it's because every time someone does the rest of you jump down their throats. Mention Ubisoft, 5 posters jump on them, mention Far Cry, same story. That is getting so annoying, not everyone is out to get this game. This is getting just a tad ridiculous, let people voice their opinion.
I wonder whether exclusivity plays a part in this.

Probably. On some places on the internet it's because Aloy is a non-sexualized female and I really hope GAF is better than that.
O wait, you guys were talking about the other way round. One thing is for sure: people are very vocal about this game.

Non hardcore gamer from non gaming site likes a game and everyone loses their minds.

Just wait on reviews from people you deem worthy and hold your vitriol for this woman who's just doing her job.

I honestly don't think that's true at all. I've seen people who are playing the game or people like myself who saw streams of it, saying negative things or things that are not so great about the game and no one told them to shut up, etc. Some of those even compared the game to far cry, tomb raider in some aspects.

Thing is people in this forum can "smell" trolls and console warriors miles away. If you have an agenda then yeah, you're going to get exposed. Like that dude that yesterday went into the spoiler free thread posting 4chan "reviews" and got exposed.

I wasn't intreseted at this game before. Although hands- on and trailers (I just watched 2 trailers, no more) were really good.
But now, with those freaking impressions, and this bloody review, I am so overhyped for this game. And the best part is that I didn't follow the news and trailers so much.

Horizon is going to be legend... wait for it... dary!
LEGENDARY.
