First impressions of The Last of Us: Remastered (Game Informer)

I like this kind of thing actually. I can't stand judder and Killzone, Infamous and even Sniper Elite had the option to make it 30fps and the experience imo was much smoother and better. I wish TR:DE would have done the same.
 
Also, TR:DE was not "locked" either. However, not once during that amazing game did I concern myself with: man this 52 FPS fucking sucks...

Talk about overblown (if it turns out to be true).

Completely locked 60 would almost be an inefficient use of resources though, as that would mean there are sections which would run faster than 60. It is a really difficult balance to hit on a console. On a PC it is your choice how much detail you are willing to lose to guarantee 60fps

I couldn't finish tr:de because of the fluctuating frame rate. I'm glad this has a 30 cap. well, that's if it's not a steady 60 which employees seem to of been hinting at.

There's few games - I'd never prefer to play Ico at 60FPS, and I'm glad they remastered that game at original framerate. I'm not sure about TLOU, but the dreamlike look of 30FPS and janky motion blur added something to the atmosphere of the game, even if it made gameplay less smooth. Besides, it's what the original game felt like, and I'm glad they're leaving the option. Lets not throw insults and/or pretend there's no people around who wouldn't think along the same lines, while knowing full well tradeoffs their decision consists of.

Besides, they're advertising the 30FPS lock as a *feature*, along with other enhancements. If it was there only as a crutch to help smooth the unsteady framerate, I doubt they'd go out of their way to advertise it.
 
From what we have seen a 30fps lock is usually implemented when a game has an unstable framerate, i.e. it's not 60fps locked.

I would like to be surprised however, if it's a reliable 60fps then I'll play it at that.

Yeah but that is the nature of a locked 60fps game... But are we talking Tomb Raider/Killzone multiplayer "60fps"? Or a 60fps game which is pretty much always 60fps but suffers from the odd dip (e.g. COD multiplayer)?

Agreed, which I alluded to in my previous post. My ideal 60fps target is an average frame rate that is extremely close to, or basically still is 60fps, with only very rare drops in more extreme circumstances, instead of an outright locked 60fps. That way you aren't leveraging away too much graphical fidelity for circumstances that could otherwise be very rare and barely impact the overall gameplay experience.

Bare in mind, an average but not locked 60fps, is still going to be a significantly smoother experience than 30fps is, even more so than a locked 30fps, so long as the drops are rare.

Drops a bit at times, but generally you can say that it's 60 and is quite noticeable (60).

I'm not particularly fussed if it's an unlocked 60, the option is good so I can test which I prefer. Choice is never a bad thing.

Ok, I'm poor at technical aspect of a game. So there will be some kind of a trade off for playing the game at 30fps like better texture, loading time or something, right? No!

Seriously? I mean, maybe two places (shantytown of course) I remember the frame rate dropping but outside of that it was silky smooth.... I just can't see it being that bad someone stops playing a game.

Yes, but it was a much improved alternate. I didn't have issues with the first aiming although I felt something was wrong, but when you I tried the alternate (which should be default btw) I noticed just how bad the first one was.

I'm all for giving gamers a choice, and in this case it might be just that, but UC3's aiming was more of a fix than actually giving players the option.

It would mean that if they actually succeeded in pushing the game past the 60 FPS. That tweet is no real indication that they did though.

well if they "remastered that game at original framerate", then it would still play at 20's range and not 30's

so, it was improved and you liked it too.

on the contrary, I think its insulting for our intelligence and our long years going hobby, to even accept such defensive statements as correct and true.

yes, all of us, many times we have played games in less than stellar framerates, we have even played good games with bad framerates, but its not like we should acknowledge the wrong thing as the right. and thats what I see that some minority is trying to push (ie "its not objectively bullcrap, because I LIKE IT BETTER like that") and thats bad for all.

edit: and i am not talking about the particular game here, but for the entire notion "half framerate is good because I looove filmic games". such bullshit.

Guymelef just posted a Tweet from - what looks like - a Spanish journalist that says the game drops a bit at times, but runs at 60 for the most part. I'm guessing alphas bring it down during gunfights.

Given that the porting process sounded painful, I'm not all that surprised. Hoping the drops don't take it below 50 and only happen when effects fill the screen.

1080p/60 FPS in single player and multiplayer.
Texture maps are 4x more detailed. Shadow maps 2x.
Higher resolution particle effects.
Occlusion mapping on decals.
No texture streaming.
Longer draw distances, better LOD
Expanded audio menu options.
Possibility to lock frame rate at 30 FPS.
Possibility to swap trigger and thumbsticks controls.
DualShock 4 touch pad, light bar and speaker supported.

I think its absurd, but opinions are subjective and choice/options are always good. Subjectively, the game got better for a tiny minority.
