[First info] Final Fantasy III DS !!

According to our sources, Final Fantasy 3 for the DS will put less focus on the characters' health points and more on their defense meter. When your character strikes a monster, its defense meter drops and the monster executes a blocking animation. Completely deplete the enemy's defenses and your character will attack directly at the monster's health points. This new innovative concept could bring up new strategies and abilities as well as the turned-based battles looking more realistic. Final Fantasy 3 currently has no solid release date as of yet.

thanx to Basic-Zombie from IGN boards :)

Sounds pretty cool (and realistic, attacking = lowering defenses).

Let's hope they implement this properly.

Well fuck.
Basically. When they said they were going to remake FFIII I didn't think they were going to radically change the gameplay. Inasmuch as it's never been remade or released in the US, that kind of misses the point entirely.

Eh, sounds like it's making battles more tedious. However, I'll wait to see how the battle system is implemented as a whole before I say anything more. If it can bring added strategy, I'm all for it. I'm hoping for good things from this title.

I was sure the "big news" was going to be "LOL CANCELLED!!!!!1"

Good to know my DS won't be collecting dust for too much longer.

God, I can't convey how much I want this game. Not that I'm wishing away the days until it comes....

There may be more to dropping their defences. Something a bit more typical of DS changes to gameplay.

Aren't you jumping ship too early here? It in't that drastic. You still do damage but not as much as when when the defense meter is gone. It opens up new possibilities for classes and enemy types.

If anything, that franchise could use a breath of fresh air. I can already play FF3 in its current form, so why the fuck do I care if they release the same damn game again. Kudos to Square for trying something new. You fuckers will be the end of gaming, I swear to God heh.

I remember reading an interview (or was it just a rumor?) where someone from Square said they may include the original FF III on the cart, because they made so many changes to the game. I sure hope so, I'd prefer to play the original.

Besides, outside of a few quirky decisions in the earlier Final Fantasies, when has Square(-Enix) ever made a bad battle system? One the reasons I love the FF series is because of it's battle systems and the changes they make in each installment. My guess is that this is being implemented the way it is becuase they may be considering a Vagrant Story type apporach to the battles? Perhaps you can target certain areas of a monster to exploit weaknesses? I eagerly await more details on FF3 DS and I'm glad we now know it's not cancelled.

Perhaps you don't, but there's a lot of people who would like to play the original game but have never been able to.

They should have saved this change for a FF VII remake or something that's already been released here, not a game we haven't seen before (though I suppose they figure if we've never played it, we'll never know the difference :/ ).

I second the Kawazu love. He may be the bane of Final Fantasy geeks, but he's still one of the greatest innovators in video game RPG history. Can't wait to play Final Fantasy 3 DS. As long as they retain the job system and the hidden secrets, this game should rock all amounts of ass.

This already sounds like a different game...

I hope they include the original FF3 mode or something cuz this defense meter crap is just another Kawazu Gimmick(TM).

I havent lost hope yet. The story better be a faithful remake because its pretty cool.

*dances*
Bring it on! Can't freakin' wait.
rk am <3 Kawazu

*goes and plays Romancing Saga 3*

Seriously though, this sounds pretty swank if done right. Imagine if you will, there are armor/defense breaking spells/weapons/classes, and direct hit stuff. So your knights will smack up heavy armored creatures with maces and such, and then your black belts could strike through for multiple times of damage. Arrows or lances could pierce, its freakin' awesome.

I agree, but I just can't get into the RS3 games. I hate not having exp. :(

the fuck? Whoever Kawazu is, he's a tool.

I'll just keep my copy sealed until it's confirmed that the original is playable (I can just play the original cart and be happy otherwise).

Good post, my thoughts also.

Cute, FF3 is gonna get SaGa'd. Let's hope someone taught Kawazu how to implement his ideas into an understandable product rather than an incomprehensible pile of goo.

why, why couldn't the Wonderswan Color version have been made? It was one of the reasons I bought the thing! Damn Nintendo.

If it wasn't in the original I don't fucking want it that way. Damn you Square, some of us are experiencing it for the first time.

Well...that's um er interesting. We'll see how it's implemented.

Why hasn't someone FIRED Kawazu? That guy hasn't made a quality game in his entire life.

He's one of Square's top Producers, since Hironobu Sakaguchi left, alongside Yasumi Matsuno (Ogre Battle, FFT, Vagrant Story, FFXII) and Yoshinori Kitase (FFX, FFX-2).

The "SaGa" series is Akitoshi Kawazu's baby. And when Square set up "Game Designer's Studio" to release GameCube games under Hiroshi Yamauchi's "Fund-Q" scam, they put it into Akitoshi Kawazu's name, so he was the producer on FF:CC, and most likely will be again on any other console game Square decides to make on a Nintendo console.

Sounds a lot like Dragon Quarter's Absolute Defense, or whatever they called it.

I like it. I'm sure FF3 is a good game as originally released, but at this would be like the 75th time I went through a game with this type of class system. Spicing stuff up is good sometimes.

Hasn't Matsuno allegedly been fired? Heh, if that rumor is true Squeenix is the worst company EVAR.

What was the last game he worked on that wasn't crap though?

SaGa 1-3 were the only ones I could tolerate (largely due to the low # of rpg's for the Game Boy then).
