First Japanese PS4 commercial

Wonder if the Japanese feel hyped about the ps4 or insulted that the rest of the world got a Japan-based console before them?

But anyway, excellent advert.
They should blame themselves... or God.
Maybe if they bought less mobile nonsense and more Playstation products SONY would make them a higher priority.

As other have said, putting a spotlight on how they demoted Japan to a Tier 2 country is an odd strategy for a commercial. I presume it's due to the fact that they still don't have a ton to show yet for a Japanese audience. I guess we'll see how well this'll work out for them.

I like how the ad makes me feel like "kept you waiting, huh?"

I can't wait to get my PS4 and MGS 5. My life will have been complete for a months once I get my hands on TTP.

Thats a terrible ad, first of all its showing people in other countries having fun way before you and 2nd it shows like 2 secs of games

I didn't see it as a demotion; more like a culmination - it's as if the ad is implying Japan is the crown jewel or guest of honor at said party.

Saving the best for last, if you will.

As a Brit, if this ad was the other way around, and showed queues of people in countries like Japan, South Korea, China and India to get me excited, I'd be completely baffled as to what they were thinking.

I'm sure Japan will feel the same way.
. What is remotely baffling about the ad?
It's not hard to figure it out at all . They are showing how excited people from all over the world are for the ps4 and you will feel the same way

There is also some national pride in seeing a company from your own country having such a hot product, and seeing so many happy people enjoying it. Such a commercial could only work for Sony or Nintendo, but not Microsoft if they tried this in Japan, as it would come off in a wrong way.

That commercial is really well done in my opinion, really builds up hype and I've had a PS4 for a month now. Hopefully it does really well in Japan and that steady stream of JRPGs we got during the second half of the PS3's lifecycle are a constant 'thing' on PS4.

Read through the thread and thought this commercial was going to be terrible, then I watched it. That was a great commercial. Reminded me of the "next gen doesn't start until _____ says so" meme. Makes it feel like the whole world is waiting for Japan to join (especially that last scene when the music drops), and also saying there's already a very active userbase around the world, excited to welcome you.

I'm not surprised though. So many gaffers said the "Perfect Day" commercial was a huge mistake and would never catch on.... heh. Solid hype trailer, before more trailers start rolling out.

Why do people think that Japanese are pissed that they are getting PS4 last?!
I have Nippon friends and they don't really care about the delay they just gonna buy it when it arrives.
People need to understand that their mentality is different than most of the gamers in the west, consoles war/fanboyism is almost non-existent there.
Well am just talking from my experience with Japanese friends i know, so there bound to be exceptions but i believe are in the minority.

I dunno. The commercial was pretty cool to me.
Like an invitation to go beyond the velvet rope.
The party just started, everyone's got a drink in 'em.
Come on in Japan, show the world how to make it hype.

This.

Those saying that it's rubbing it in their faces that the rest of the world got it first are clearly being cynical for the sake of being cynical. *shocker* It's already been explained, and widely accepted by the Japanese, that the console wasn't ready for Japan in November (game wise).

The theme is almost this party that is happening world wide, and then the music cutting and point to Japan "???" as in, are you gonna join or what?

Its pretty well done, this one, the UK "nostalgia PlayStation" one and the perfect day are all really good. Especially compared to the PS3 ones where finding just 1 good commercial was a project in and out of itself, too weird before Gaga made weird cool

This as well. I think a lot of the folks that find that this ad would be "offensive" do not actually understand the Japanese as much as they think they do..

what is up with the cynics in GAF? Is everyone successful marketing majors with great track records? Who the fook knows what is catering to what market based on race alone?

Simple message, "people around the world had fun with the PS4 launch, this product coming to Japan soon as well!! yaay!"

I'm sure they'll be more gameplay commercials aired closer to launch, but what is wrong with celebrating people having fun with a product launch?

Sheesh, everything is friggin negative on forums. You guys need to go eat a rainbow or something. No one cares about getting iti "last"...not every place is immature prideful U.S

Decent enough ad I guess (lol at posters getting puffed up about it) but my main find in all this was the link on the side to that FFX/X-2 HD TV commercial running in Japan where everyone is crying. That's a truly wonderful advert :)

yup....i can't understand the dialog, but i almost teared up as well....nostalgia!!!

Before people keep posting the music is weird for Japan, guess what, they live on planet earth and have internet oh and a thing called airplanes!

"western" music and artists have been popular there for decades and will continue to be. Hate to put all you guy's weird assumptions that Japan still lives in some crazy bubble where they get nothing from outside their own land but stuff like Gaga, has been in their pop culture since the start too. Theres nothing weird about the music choice, or the commercial. And its not some "new trend" for western music there, it might be new if you count... the 1950's as new since thats when it started.

#getabookonhapanesemedia

Fuck, even David Bowe had a goddamn concert there like 2 months ago sold out.

sorry to blow you guy's minds like that with common information lol but its really annoying to see almost an entire thread of people assuming that this kind of stuff isn't every day for them... like they arn't human or something.
don't waste your fingers man...sensibility comes and goes at this place...

No knock to the staff/mods/news seekers on gaf, really is a wonderful place, but ignorance stands out more in a big forum where there's over 1000 posters every day. meh, pros and cons...

lol some bizarre comments in here about this 'not' being Japanese enough hahaha

Good commercial and a good way to kick off the JP marketing campaign

This !

I am growing sick and tired of people thinking of Japanese people as a bunch of aliens all locked on their island and oblivious or non caring of anything not Japanese .

Think about it :apart from having a different culture like any other race they are no different from you .

They love western music
They love products made in the west
They eat western food unless you still believe the stereotypical view that all a Japanese eat is squid .whale Rice and Sake .

The fact that The console was designed by an American or that the world got it first before them does not matter one bit .

Did Europe reject the PS3 and almost all game releases during the PS2 and 3 era because we where always last in line to get something ? no!

PS4 can fail for many reasons in Japan but it failing because they get it last or that it was a western design will be one of the very last reasons Why it did .

I think this is a pretty smart commercial. Japanese in general love popular things and they showed people lining up for the PS4. I remember a TV show where they experimented by having people line up in front of a store in Tokyo and passerbys just started lining up for it even though some weren't sure what it was for.

Bizarre music choice for the Japanese market.

A catchy tune is catchy anywhere. The real hook is the visuals. Presentable, enthusiastic people out in public, mugging and waving for the camera, spliced with masterfully-edited shots of cool-looking shit makes for a commercial that plays to Japan's zeitgeist-centric aspirations.

I don't know Bout you but when all of the lights start arching and shoot in to the territory of Japan and the beat drops and the camera swooshes across the light bar and ps symbol well I just want to go buy another ps4 lol for my brother in law of course.

Seems like exactly what I thought Sony where doing. Building hype in the rest of the world to try to get Japan hyped..... since nothing else seems too unless it's handheld.

Shouldn't they be showing why the product is awesome? Ok, show the world getting hype, but then maybe spend some time showing off the thing you're trying to sell.

Compare those BBC bumpers, which were 100% gameplay and nicely subtle.

This ad is for Japan? If anything the vibe I got from this ad is very anti-Japan. It basically says that we have the world so fuck you Japan get on board or get out.

I'm fairly certain that's not what the ad is 'saying'.

A huge mistake Sony could make right now (in terms of advertising and promotion) is to start pushing the PS4 as a product tailored for X country or X region. In order for the PS4 to succeed globally it needs to be positioned as a global product. It's really that simple.

Which begs the question: Are there those in Japan that are still interested with console gaming, or is that going to become obsolete?

This ad is only going to run for a week. There will be others that are sure to be more straightforward and informative.
