Sorry, but this looks great.

DAY 01
Bad

DAY 02

DAY 03
Bad

DAY 04

We need to see it in motion, though. I hope it doesn't look like bad CG in motion.

:D

but! I still stand by what I said a few pages ago. that NO football game in the coming Xbox360, Revolution, Playstation3 generation (2005-2010/11) will look like that commercial.

I agree. They might be able to get models looking like that, but not at a respectable framerate with that many things going on at once, like the field deformation, snow, blur, particle effects. That is still VERY far ahead of what we can do realtime right now.

How can Day 3 be bad and Day 4 be good when it's the exact same models? :lol

And I know the game prolly won't come close to that commercial in alot of aspects, but the character models are pretty comparable,IMO.

Becuase the further away from the models the better it looks ( meaning the less flaws the trolls can spot )

It looks great but the models are nowhere near accurate. Runyan is 330 pounds, Thomas 350 pounds. Maybe EA is expecting them to lose a ton of weight in the offseason.

No game make it look like shit, but it's not that big of a jump from current games.

mlb2k5_blt4_x_7867.jpg

From a technical perspective MLB had self shadowing and shadows that applied from one player onto another, and even added them up appropriately.

The reason why I'm posting the pic is to show that people have good reasons to be unimpressed.

Like demon said, gotta see it in motion.

It's clear from the latest pic that all of their pants sport the same texture, and it looks like it doesn't change when they are in different poses, so the wrinkles will always be there. On the other hand, every player there is in a unique and interesting looking poses, meaning that they'll all have different animations

Note the player on the Jumbotron. I'm guessing it's #30, but it's missing the breath. You can see some great detail there!

Thank you, the point that i tried to make but yet people ignored :lol

Very impressive.

Except the skin texture. It's too shiny or smooth or something. I guess it could be intentional and is supposed to be sweat or something, but I think if you sweat like that, even during the most intense of activities, you need to see someone about it.

Besides, it's snowing.

OMG,ESPN MLB does not even come CLOSE to this.

Not to mention ESPN MLB is probably the worst sports game animations wise out of the VC camp this gen and a crap ass baseball game to boot.

I like the pic but like others said, the size of a couple of those players is way off. I hope they don't abuse the plastic look like so many games have done this gen.

Yea I'm the biased one...where were you in all of the baseball game discussions? The ESPN MLB league? All the other ESPN league threads?Oh thats right, you weren't there.

Yea I spent 80 bucks this year on all those ESPN games just so I could call them crap, and no the animation in ESPN MLB is not fine. The batters do complete corkscrews no matter where they hit the ball,it could be an opposite field hit and they still turn a corkscrew towards the other way.The dive animation is terrible, the game has matrix animations just like NFL,seriously what is that? The animations just all of a sudden start running at 5 FPS.

So no,I'm not biased,I just know a good sports sim when I see one and the ESPN games were not that.It pisses me off when trolls try to tell me that something is good or fine,or that Madden is a roster update when they've probably never even played the game before.I played and bought them all this year,I could write books on the problems in the ESPN games. But back to the main point, that pic is no where close to the detail in these pics,it's just insane to even suggest that.

uh, modus there's nothing biased when you call out a crappy game like espn mlb

ramirez said it best already, so i will summarize: espn mlb 2k5 is the worst sports game i have played in at least 5 years, and possibly longer. i'm not exaggerating, i'm not overstating it, that game is complete and total garbage.

MLB 2k5 has good animations? :lol :lol :lol :lol its has the worst animations out of all the baseball games. If you want to see good baseball animations play MLB 2006.

I will back it up x2... though I think NBA 2K5 was the worst.

It's interesting to me that the guys that play ALL of the sports games like Ramirez, FMT, DM, myself, and Bob are all in agreement, yet the guys who don't even play with us are crying foul. Only person who's opinion I would even entertain about ESPN games is Jobber's, and maybe even Konex.

No one even mentioned in this thread the absurd amount of useless animations and the way that they are triggered in ESPN games. Trying dribbling in NBA 2K5 at all and it triggers like 3-4 different animations, all of which take the control out of the players hand in favor of having the artists dictate where and when the player controlled character moves. Fucking garbage.

Back to the idea of cloth physics,McNabbs jersey is hardly crinkled at all compared to Strahan in that one pic,so it looks like it does vary...

So you haven't played Triple Play I take it? Also, looking at gamerankings.com, it's easy to point out that you are in the minority in your way of thinking. MLB 2K5 didn't score much less than EA's baseball game.

OMG,ESPN MLB does not even come CLOSE to this.

Judging from the pics, it's pretty close, and IT'S LAST GEN FOR GOD'S SAKE!

i really dont give a shit what other people say about it. i am an unbiased baseball gamer in that i neither love nor hate the sport. what i see when i play the game is total garbage, and if any EA haters actually had the balls to admit MVP was the superior title we'd all be better off.

but, always gotta root for david, $19.99 and the little developer that could. i guess it's your opinion that ESPN MLB is better, but it's like saying you prefer to wash your hair with your cousins nut juice over shampoo: i just find it hard to believe

I never said it was better, I'm saying that it looks comparable to EA's next gen football game from a graphics perspective.

The EA fans realized that what I said was very true, and got all defensive and then sought to trash MLB, a game that only scored one or two points (out of 10) lower than MLB according to most reviews.

The fact is, EA has and apparently still do suck at visuals, and Madden 2006 is no exception. That is, to put things bluntly. My original points weren't so blunt, but it was obvious that people weren't accepting them as valid points, and then took the time to attempt to trash other games. Which is why I'm being so flat out about it now.

I also posted examples of ESPN hockey, which makes Madden look like a cartoon. It makes the NEXT GEN Madden look like a cartoon.

Before we dive deeper into the EA baseball praisefest, let's take a minute to remember when EA's baseball game was inferior...
tripleplaybaseballps2.jpg

I think ESPN MLB is fun for informal 2 player and I like the feel of the batter/pitcher duel, but MVP is 10 times more polished and has all kinds of good franchise stuff for 1 player. I don't think ESPN MLB is even close to the worst sports game of the last 5 years, maybe I'd nominate Live 2k2 for that, but it's not as good as MVP for sure. I still need to play MLB 2006 too though.

Sorry, I'm still impressed.

The Madden pics crap all over that baseball one. Love the soft self-shadowing on the Madden models. And if the worst thing you can say about a game is that the Runyan body model looks off or their arms are too shiny for a game far from finish then they must be doing something right. Trust me a dlineman looking like he lost 20 or 30 lbs want be a deal breaker for me.

I know it's still impressive, but its looking a lot more possible now.

The first close up is great because it gives you an idea of what kind of LOD and great textures this thing can bring to the table, and what kind of snazzy weather effects its pulling off. The picture of the tackle was one I was skeptical about. The motion blur and other factors gave it a very pre-rendered look... it instilled the feeling that the coming video will be purely a non-indicative movie thats probably more tech demo than gameplay. Hopefully that's not the case.. I think the most disconcerting with the close up shots was the darkness.

This latest picture falls in line with what I was expecting and pleasantly surprises me by exceeding it a little. Unreal 3 stuff is gonna look awesome on this machine. Having said that, I do think this looks like more-refined this-gen/Xbox graphics. I don't know what I expected, but the leap now doesn't have me shitting my pants with awe or anything. Maybe that big screen in the background and some cool cloth effects could change that. But the stadium doesn't appear to have that wow factor yet. It looks quite blurry and I'm betting we're getting crap crowds again. This is a first gen game if its a game though, think how great things are gonna look down the line.

I'm more interested now in improved framerates, animation, AI, new things...
bring E3 on! Can't wait for more!!

b) they're starting now to look like bad CG. (like a bad made for kids tv cg series)

Well, I always figured this would happen eventually. When technology reaches a certain height, then it's left to the developers to utilize that technology correctly. And with a field as big as videogames have with developers, you're gonna get a far range of good to bad. I'm expecting this generation to benefit more than any before, from 1st gen titles, 2nd, 3rd, etc. A lot of things will be allowed with these machines, and developers will keep pushing it for a long time. But that's what will be exciting. I'm expecting certain projects to blow away some of the weaker stuff. They're not only going to be moving at the same pace, some studios are far ahead of others.

Anyway, as far as this goes, I'm really happy with it. But I think they could wow us a lot more. I'm waiting to see stadium lighting, and overall detail. That should be amazing. The other thing meanwhile, animation. It should be interesting. Can't wait for Saturday... Hell, can't wait for the next image. :D

we need to see close up shots of the grass.
If the grass looks half as detailed as it does in the concept pic, i'll be impressed

Are we seeing the Uncanny Valley effect here?

http://slate.msn.com/id/2102086/

In 1978, the Japanese roboticist Masahiro Mori noticed something interesting: The more humanlike his robots became, the more people were attracted to them, but only up to a point. If an android become too realistic and lifelike, suddenly people were repelled and disgusted.

The problem, Mori realized, is in the nature of how we identify with robots. When an android, such as R2-D2 or C-3PO, barely looks human, we cut it a lot of slack. It seems cute. We don't care that it's only 50 percent humanlike. But when a robot becomes 99 percent lifelike—so close that it's almost real—we focus on the missing 1 percent. We notice the slightly slack skin, the absence of a truly human glitter in the eyes. The once-cute robot now looks like an animated corpse. Our warm feelings, which had been rising the more vivid the robot became, abruptly plunge downward. Mori called this plunge "the Uncanny Valley," the paradoxical point at which a simulation of life becomes so good it's bad.

As video games have developed increasingly realistic graphics, they have begun to suffer more and more from this same conundrum. Games have unexpectedly fallen into the Uncanny Valley.

LOL. They definitely went overboard with the wayfarer wearing creepy mustachioed guys. All they needed were raincoats.

If you want to see good baseball animations play MLB 2006.

I'll second that statement. Some amazing animations in that game.

Anyway, I'm loving the background in the latest Madden shot. The lighting in these screenshots really seems well done.

Have you actually played the game or are you just fapping to review scores?

Modus, you weren't being sarcastic,I made you look like an idiot, then it turned into a joke! :lol

Boy...am I gonna be right about Japanese devs shaming those Unreal3 shots when they start putting some delicious artwork in their games. If EA is even thinking about doing something like this with their hack employees, then the likes of Namco, Tecmo and KCEJ are gonna blow our socks off. MGS4, get! PEACE.

That is my main problem with ESPN games. All the extra animations. It is like their style or something because it is in the NFL, MLB, and NCAA B-Ball games. Take out the extra animations, then those games rate higher on my list.

Where was the humor in your comment?Calling someone bias=teh funny?I must have missed the boat on that one!

What is funny though,I try to make some valid complaints and instead of discussing the matter at hand you retreat to the sarcasm comment and totally change the topic, give me some reasons why ESPN MLB has good animations, which is what sparked your comment, because I said they were trash, which everyone here aside from like 2 of you are in total agreement about.

At the risk of sounding condescending, citing reviews in sports game arguments is not going to get you anywhere. 99% of them are regurgitated PR bullshit written by people who don't know shit from shinola about how the sport is played.

Reading one impressions thread here or at Operation Sports written by people who forked over $50 for the game is vastly more informative than reading a review in EGM that gives NBA 2k5 a "7.5," talks about 24/7 mode, and makes lame jokes about Iverson's tatoos.

NFL 2k5 looks great for about an hour, and then it falls apart faster than Jason Campbell did his junior year against the Ole Miss defense. You have to play it for a long time to appreciate how broken it is.

OS is a joke too, they gave football game of the year to ESPN NFL...and have you read the forums before?Good lawd...it's like GameFAQs sports edition :lol

There are good posters and bad posters at OS. But after reading a 10 page impressions thread, you can generally figure out if a game is worth your money or not. Plus Jistic's sliders are invaluable.

Operation Sports is honestly the biggest joke on the net when it comes to "sports gaming" sites. here is why:

1. their boards run like shit

2. i will NEVER EVER trust them again after the NCAA 2005 xbox fiasco. for those of you who dont know what happened i will tell you. I personally went to E3 (the highlight of my life btw as i for some reason keep bringing it up!) and played madden/ncaa 2005 on all systems. NCAA 2005 ran great on ps2, but i noticed slowdown on the xbox version. i posted here and there and wherever else i could get people to listen that there was something very wrong w/ the xbox version and i hoped they would fix it. i said i will not buy the game if it performs as it did @ e3. so, along rolls june, and Steve @ OS has the final version of NCAA 2005 for xbox a week or so before it's coming to release. of course i am very interested to hear about the issue of slowdown. he says "nope, no slowdown that *I* notice, game is great". then i say thank god, i will buy it now. i buy it. the game is likely the worst football game EA has ever released (for its time). there is major slowdown on the xbox version (just as there was @ e3) and the game is shitty. why wasn't this disclosed? i know that guy isn't a fucking RETARD, so what kind of games were going on? either he didn't have the game, he doesn't know what to look for in a sports game, or he was kissing EA's ass so his site wasn't deprived of future pre-releases. either way i have only been back to that site once in the past year, and that was a few weeks ago to tell a developer from VC that he is full of shit and espn mlb 2k5 sucks nuts

3. their reviews read like press releases

so, for all those reasons and more, i say fuck off to operation sports. if i get into e3 again this year you guys will see what sports gaming reporting SHOULD be. and that's not even bragging. it doesn't take a genius to write about exactly what you play and see, but apparently that's too hard for some dedicated sports sites

Its not the uncanny valley thing.

i think its the DOF, it seems to extreme so it makes it look like the characters are standing in front of a blue screen.

also the lighting on the arms is a little weird...

anyway im just nitpicking but technically this is still miles beyond what were getting currently.
