Their new movie about the life of Howard Hughes, "The Aviator," is an action-packed, stylish epic that is easily the most involving motion picture of 2004.

After seeing the gorgeously realized biopic yesterday morning, my guess is that it will not only be nominated for the Academy Award, but that it will win without too much trouble.

Almost nothing Leonardo DiCaprio has done prepares you for how good he is as eccentric billionaire Howard Hughes. Scorsese and screenwriter John Logan concentrate on Hughes' active middle years as an innovative aviation expert, filmmaker and playboy, rather than on his later years as a crazy recluse with a poor public image.

There's only one more Oscar-buzz film to see, Clint Eastwood's "Million Dollar Baby."

Otherwise, it seems like we have five nominees from a slightly larger field, and a front-runner in "The Aviator" that combines the spirit of Scorsese's lamented classic "New York, New York" with the movie-making of "GoodFellas."

Well good news I suppose, especially after the self-indulgent, badly plotted mess of 'Gangs of New York'.
Though to be honest, I've never been too much of a fan of Scorcese's work.

Aviator looks way, way, way too over-produced. It's so glossed up that I'm put off. I'm also quickly getting tired of seeing Alex Baldwin play the same damned character over and over again.

Gangs of New York is also a favorite of mine, though it has its problems. (Daniel Day Lewis, though, is probably the reason I like it as much as I do).

By the way, who is that in your avatar?

Daniel Day-Lewis really does make the movie great. I like to pretend that the guy his character was based off was actually as cool as him. Supposedly he actually did yell out "I die a true American!" when he was killed in a gang fight.

Devendra Banhart is the man in my avatar. Musician from San Francisco, he basically started the whole freak-fok(indie-folk) revival thang.

i think the 4 and half hour cut of gangs of new york would solve a lot of the problems i had with it. bring it on scorsese!
