I just found an awesome post on....4chan....and decided I needed to share it. Semi-fitness related, here you go!

Dihydrogen Monoxide:
is called "hydroxyl acid", the substance is the major component of acid rain.
contributes to the "greenhouse effect".
may cause severe burns.
is fatal if inhaled.
contributes to the erosion of our natural landscape.
accelerates corrosion and rusting of many metals.
may cause electrical failures and decreased effectiveness of automobile brakes.
has been found in excised tumors of terminal cancer patients.

Despite the danger, dihydrogen monoxide is often used:
as an industrial solvent and coolant.
in nuclear power plants.
in the production of Styrofoam.
as a fire retardant.
in many forms of cruel animal research.
in the distribution of pesticides. Even after washing, produce remains contaminated by this chemical.
as an additive in certain "junk-foods" and other food

Can't help but laugh a little.

I remember Penn and Teller doing a bit on the horrors of water, err dihydrogen monoxide.

Adding 50 lbs in two months? Isn't that a lot?

EDIT:: Also elbow pain from squats? There was a link posted not to long ago on Rip commenting on how to fix your position to prevent tendinitis in your arms from squats, it helped me out a lot.

It is a lot but I'm doing SS progression and I'm still not maxed out yet. I had gotten to 340 previously then took a break. Yeah I watched the Rippetoe video and it definitely helped me, but my elbow is still a bit sore.

It's just regular soreness, I can get through most of the ROM without issue, and with stretching and lighter weight it'd probably go away, I just wasn't sure if that still meant I should give the muscle group another day of rest. I don't get frustrated by that, I'm one who is definitely willing to lay off for the greater good for my body.

Perhaps you've gotten to the point where you should do squats every other day instead of everyday. Depending on how much you're lifting relative to your bodyweight, you might be entering intermediate/advanced stage which means you don't have to do squats every workout.

So I have been slowly moving to heavier weights with squats (I am still a beginner) but I am recently noticing a kind of pain on my inner upper thighs on the upwards part of the movement, it seems a lot worse with my left leg actually. Why could this happen, can it indicate bad technique? I am not sure how to fix it because I feel it is stopping me from advancing...

Is it in the joint? Is is muscular? What does it feel like?

I have been dealing with something similar the past month, as has X-Frame. Both of us think it's our psoas acting up. Are you experiencing any lower back soreness, too?

Why chocolate milk, though? Won't regular milk work just as well? Is it because of the insulin spike due to the added sugars?

A study done by UT.

BTW, should people be benching twice, or at least close to twice of their body weight? I was arguing with my friend, and he weighs around 200 lbs. Dude used to bench 395 before he broke his wrist. I told him I weigh 172, and there's no fucking way in hell could I ever bench 340 at 172. That would be beyond human.

It's definitely not beyond human.

Hard, yes, beyond human? No.

That said, I imagine your weight would increase as you got up to that point, so, yeah.

I thought a great bench press goal was 1-1.5x bodyweight.

A lot of police exams are even less than that. 90% or more of your body weight.

I always thought 1x your body weight was a good "starting point." I guess I was wrong in that, especially now that I know what people are actually benching.

I think your body weight is more arbitrary for bench than it is for other exercises. The NFL Combine standards tend to support this.
Edit: which is not to say it's irrelevant.

So what I get from the OP is that in order to build size you must use heavy weights. Three sets of 1-5 reps, correct?

Well, I know I can bench 255. And honestly, I'm not sure I weigh 172. When I stepped on the scale at the gym, that was after my big bowl of oatmeal and drinking a lot of water while at the gym. I'll check tommorrow again.

5-8 reps would be idealy I'd think.

Well get up tomorrow, drink some coffee, shit your brains out and let us know what you really weight. ;)

I bet most able bodied men can not bench their own body weight. Its not a remarkable feat but its also hard enough to require some fairly dedicated training.

What do people use here for recovery drinks?

I used to drink Endurox R4. But wanted to switch to something with less sugar. Tried Gatordae's recovery drink, drinking a protein shake, fruit smoothie, honey and pb sandwich. Nothing seems to be working for the new workouts I've been doing.

I'm guessing the length of my workouts is what has been impacting me the most?

I've switched from doing lifting/cardio for approx 1.5 hours, 5 times a week to jiujitsu for 2 hours at a stretch 5 times a week.

You don't need anything fancy.

Water, protein shake, banana, etc. It doesn't matter so long as your nutrition through out the day is sufficient. The more you lift, weigh, work etc determines necessity.

Don't buy into the GNC snake oil shit.

You're going to be sore if you're training something you're not accustomed to training. That's natural, don't let it dissuade you from lifting, and there is no magical potion to make it go away. Eventually your doms will become less or even non existent.

Just wondering, but I've seen a lot of people posting their bench/squat/deads, and I'm curious - is it standard practice to take into account the weight of the bar when posting lifts or do you leave that out?

Why wouldn't you count the bar? You're posting what you're lifting, pressing etc.

shogun put me on ignore? Finally, don't have to listen to his condescending bull anymore! :)

Safe to say today was a much better workout session with my coach than the previous week, even my coach was impressed with the "night and day" attitude and effort I put into things this week. Yeah, I'm having to go back to light weights to start over because of my downtime, but oh well, didn't expect this to be a simple straight up growth.

lol, oh the 80s how I miss thee. Dude knocked himself the fuck out, haha.

It feels like muscle, I think..or maybe tendon? Definitely not joint. It's like the part running along just under the pelvis on the inner side of the thigh and feels like it's being put under extreme stress/pressure. The pain stops immediately once the weight goes off my legs.

Interesting that you mention this because when I started with deadlifts, I used to get lower back pain on the upwards movement as well. It disappeared as I got used to the movement. So maybe I should just take it easier with squats, increase my reps and decrease my weight and see if it's just an adaptation issue? Because my issue is I did not take squats seriously for a long time so maybe my body is just not used to it yet. I dunno..

Are burpees and other random body weight exercises a good form of cardio in place of running? Having muscles and a crappy heart isn't an aim for me really. Haven't done proper cardio for a while.

Burpees are pretty frigging hard. I say they'll give you a good cardio workout, particularly in combination with some other workouts done in a circuit.

What about stationary rowing or cycling?

If you have a weak heart then I can't imagine you'll be comfortable doing burpees for prolonged periods of time.

If I were you I might think about resetting and having your form evaluated, but I'm working with limited information here.

Oh fuck me, broscience elitism on a gaming forum. Just when I thought I've seen everything....

Are you not familiar with Combine? If you were, you wouldn't be saying this.

It's all for the greater good to have him on ignore, and apparently he's made a name for himself in other forums as well.

And wth does "broscience elitism" even mean? Especially in this context?

x2.

I think if there were two things to teach anyone on fitness and training, it would be

1) Don't rely on supplements for progress

and

2) strength is a skill built on adaptation to progressively intense resistance.

There would probably be ten commandments of the subject, but two is all I got off the top of my head. It should be known that intensity is not measured on sweat accrued.

Make sure your form is correct. If you are feeling your lower back when doing deadlifts, then your form is off.

The most important bit about deadlifts is to drive your hip back and keep your shins completely vertical on your way down. The reason why you want your shins vertical is that if you are putting the weight down and your shins are pointing forward, then you are moving the bar down and over your knees -- which means that the bar is not moving completely vertical. If that is happening, then you are engaging your lower back (and by extension your psoas). That's not good. The bar should be completely vertical on your way down.

This is less of an issue when engaging the deadlift to move up simply because of the mechanics of it and you are more than likely to keep the bar vertical on your way up.

Remember this diagram:

I was browsing through random fitness threads last night and laughed when I read this

Not getting a pump doesn't mean you're not going to grow from the work. A pump is like a bonus IMO. I figure a good workout is like a high paying job, you see the reward a couple weeks later in your pay check, getting a pump is like getting a handjob while you're actually at work - Its the bonus.

Dat pump

Finally getting my strength back, did 100lbs per hand dumbbell shoulder press today for the first time in more than a month. Almost all my lifts are back to where they were before, give or take about 5lbs, so 3 weeks off results in about 2 weeks to get back.

Way ahead of you.

Martin Berkhan is a genuine guru of his craft. He speaks, I listen. To do otherwise would be like a powerlifter eschewing Louie Simmon's advice. Westside Barbell doesn't break powerlifting records left and right because there's something in the water, or all great powerlifters just happened to be born in or around Ohio. That would be something, though, wouldn't it?

I want this.
I'll give a review once I've had a chance to digest it. I think it's about time I re-evaluated what I'm doing again, just to be safe. For the most part my back has been ok, but it still acts up sometimes. I think it gets irritated mostly when I move plates around and rerack them. Also really pushed hard on planks Friday and my back was sore all weekend.

Is creatine worth adding to the supplement repetoire?

I'm currently taking:

Multivitamin
Fish Oil
Jacked
Protein Powder (Isolate/Casein)

Funny enough, I got that link from here. Didn't realize it was you that had posted it, heh. I'm not familiar with Westside Barbell but they got some beastly guys there. Perhaps they should start bottling that Ohio water and selling it.

Louie Simmons wrote the book on brute strength. He called it the Westside Barbell Book of Methods. Totaling Elite over 50 years old gives him that right, lol. It's almost like a novice should read Starting Strength by Rippetoe, an intermediate may follow the Texas Method, and if you have any future in totaling Elite you should listen to Louie. If I had any plans on it I would.

@Troblin

Creatine is among, if not the only strength supplement marketed today that isn't hogwash. It isn't for everybody, but if you dig it keep it up.
