They're waiting to see it drop on your head. ;)
If I was convinced that they were concerned about my grip I would really mess with them and half-drop it on my head on the way down. I would writhe in agony and scream GOTCHA when they came to help. Except that gym injuries are never funny. Ever.

Except for that twig of a kid who loaded 600lbs on a Smith machine and folded like a plastic 80's lawn chair. Even that's only half-funny.

Lacks the power of instantaneous movement
Question for the group:

I just got a pair of dip bars that latch onto my power rack. I've been supplementing SL 5X5 with chin ups and will now add dips to the mix.

What kind of set and rep plan should I follow with these exercises? I've seen people say to shoot for 3X15 BW for chin ups. Is this too many? Should I just follow a 5X5 format for these as well or maybe 3X8?

Currently, I can do around 3X10 chin ups and 3X8 for dips at BW. Should I just start adding weight (I'm going to ask my GF for a dipping belt for Christmas) as soon as I can?

Thanks.

Definitely get a belt. I do both high rep bodyweight and lower rep weighted pull ups that I rotate every week. As for the dips I would add weight every week and skip the body weight ones. I'd stick to 3 or 4 sets of 6-12 reps. This can changed week to week also. There's no rule that you have to do the same set/rep routine every week.

Dawn Simulator (Philips Wake-Up Light) - Amazon

Prior to waking up the light begins to slowly get brighter until your desired wake-up time and then the room is lit up so it supposed to artificially simulate the morning sun.

As of now I wake up everyday at 6 AM in pitch blackness and it's terrible. The only issue is it's price. $90 for this seems steep.

I bought one a few months ago because my room in my place is really dark and this makes it easier to wake up. I think it was worth it, I seem to be more refreshed in the mornings and it isn't a chore to get out of bed as it used to be waking up in pure darkness. It's also nice to wake up to the chirping birds since it feels somewhat natural.

There are some downsides though. If you are a light sleeper (like me) you will probably end up waking up 10 minutes or so before your alarm goes off, though it's not a big deal and gives you kind of a built in snooze timer. This happens to me because the light wakes me up earlier. The only other downside is price which I just bit the bullet on. It's kind of one of those things where you don't notice how well it works until you don't have it anymore.

So I started logging my workouts into fitocracy. First workout logged in fine and I tried logging my second workout and then went back to yesterday and then back to today and my workout logs are gone. I tried doing it again and the same thing happened. Anybody else getting this as well in fitocracy?

I've been going over http://www.silverhydra.com/ for the past few days and it's been quite a treat. This guy's a riot, and even if Cheat Mode is a slightly retooled LeanGains form of fasting for better training results, it's still nifty. I like his "angry bear" eating strategy for bulking, it's pretty amusing; it's also not too far off from how I've approached my intermittent fasting when I want to add a little muscle. People who watch me eat wonder how I don't look like a beached whale. Ones who are closer wonder how I don't fall over and die from fasting for 16 hours every day. Nutrient timing is awesome, folks.

The Angry Bear

  • Fast: Pulse ephedrine and caffeine with some fish oil, drink some black coffee straight out of the pot. Sneak some yohimbine HCl in there as well. Dominate life.
  • 2 hours out from workout: 500kcal, 40% protein (50g) and 60% fats (33g). Some trace carbs from veggies.
  • Workout nutrition: The Muscle building Approach protocol
  • Feast: Two scoops of whey with 15g Metamucil to get requirements out of the way. A few burgers or sandwiches (3-4) with some chocolaty treat on the side; a few (3-4) bowls of chili or borscht as well. A few babies.
  • Relatively ‘Light’ snack: What you didn’t eat before, carried on over later in the night. Maybe make some protein pudding with casein protein and cottage cheese.

Hey guys, I'm back with a question for the experienced lifters here. I absolutely hate working my back because I never feel anything either during workouts or after workouts. Because of this I often feel like I'm doing something wrong. Is it normal not to feel a burn for everything?

So the difference between the Cheat Mode and Leangains method seems to be emphasizing eating a meal 2 hours before training and carb loading on the meal after training right?

New pb 475 deadlift. Went for 500 but was too exhausted to get it off the ground. Either way fuck yeah!

Nice gains. Seems like just not too long back you were lifting in high 300s. Quite the improvement.

My bad, it was 405 back in July! 70 pounds in 5 months is amazing. What routine have you been doing for posterior chain since this summer?

When doing bench presses, how many sets should you do? I'm doing 12 sets at 8 reps each. I start off at 110lbs, then drop as I Max out. By the time I'm done I'm usually around 75lbs. Yeah I know I'm weak, fuck you!

Warm-up set(s) then 3x5 at as much weight as you can manage. 12x8 is stupid, sorry.

Hey, never be embarrassed about how much weight you put up. Just lifting it is awesome.

For strength, you'll typically hover near your max for low reps. For hypertrophy, you'll typically go for higher reps (say 8-12). Depending on your regimen, you'll do 3 - 5 sets.

My goal is to get a bigger chest and be stronger. Hypertrophy (learned a new word) means my chest gets bigger right? So if I want to achieve both, what do I do?

Thanks! Just do good mornings on back day, squats the next day and Deadlifts on my mixed day which is today. My back day I do a crapload of rows including 2 variations of bent over row barbell and heavy upright row.

I can fully breakdown my routine later if you want. I'm at the barber atm. Posin from my phone so it's a bit of a mess

Check this graph:

For sarcoplasmic hypertrophy you'll do higher reps, and for myofibrillar you'll do lower. I personally think 20 is a bit much, I prefer around 10 myself.

You will, however, get stronger as you work more. I'd recommend 6-10 reps, and also it really helps to keep a small journal. Write your weights and slowly attempt to increase them. 5x5 deals well with strength gains.

And, of course, make sure you're eating properly! Good luck!

Excellent work, Shogun.

Thanks!

Tell me... why didn't you want to take a stab at powerlifting again?

My squat is weak. I mindfuck myself with it because I hurt myself back this summer doing 315 x 5. It's hard to overcome and I always worry about hurting myself again, so I'm taking it REAL slow with squats.

Edit:

Deadbeef, I'll break down my back routine instead of my whole routine.

Back day I start with pullups 3 sets of what feels fine until I need weighted assistance. Then pulldowns 3 sets at 140+, seated rows 3 sets at 150+.

Then I move to the barbell. 3 sets of close grip bent over rows at 145 x5+ . Then 3 sets at wide grip also at 145x5+.

Then I do goodmornings. "to feel" Typically I warm up (duh) then I finish anywhere from 3 sets at 135x10+ to 3 sets at 185x10+. Again, it all depends on how my back/hams feel.

I then move to Upright rows. 3 sets at 155x5+.

Then I move to the bench to finish my last to exercises. 3 sets of 110lb bent over DB row for 6+ reps (not krock rows, I make a complete stop at the bottom). Then I do 3 sets of reverse flys at 25 lb dumbbell (slow) just to hit rear delt again.

Then, like I said I do squats the next day. This week I did 295 3x5. And well, you already know deadlifts.

It looks like a lot, but it goes really fast (like an hour or less fast).

I was wondering why your squat was so low compared to your bench. Anyway, good number on the deadlift!

Yeah, definitely my weakest area next to my pullups. Not proud of it, but I really don't wanna hurt my back like I did before.

Thanks!

Side note, wife bought me more Beefaroni, fuck yeah! Hot sauce up in this bitch. Real Results.

Are you just working up to heavy singles for the DL, or 5x5, or what?

Also, why do squats hurt your back, but heavy DLs do not?

Sounds like its more psychological than anything, since squats apparently caused his injury.

I could be just spitting bullshit though.

So I skipped squats on my SS routine today. Im bartending a show until 5am so ill be on my feet for 10 or so hours, and simply didn't want to deal with exhausted legs. Hopefully doing so once every so often wont kill my progress.

I should clarify. Squats don't hurt my back at all. However, I did get a pretty nasty injury last summer.

The main issue I have now is I can't get my shoulders back enough to stablilize the bar for squats (I want the bar to be more secure. That and everything was going awesome (like it is now) for me back in the summer, then I squatted and hurt myself and it set me back. So it's a form issue and a mental issue. The weight isn't an issue at all.

I typically work up to a 1x5 set for Deadlifts. Today I did a work up to 1rm.

I think from now on I may just do heavy singles working up, especially with how my body feels right now.

My pelvic pain is back and my shoulders have been fucked for the past month or so, out of commission for a week now.

I wanted to get to 350x20 and eventually 400@200 for my squat goal. I'll restart that when i'm healthy.

Just do high bar squats or front squats.

I didn't get to that chapter yet, but Ultimate Back has you qualify before doing squats by meeting certain positional requirements.

I got a new max in BP today at 245. Now I just need to get 10 more lbs so I can bench 1.5x my weight. That last 10 pounds is going to be tough though.

My body, holy shit my body is fatigued and sore. Jesus, I was going to go for 1rm in press today, but I'll just stick to trying 200 3x5.

Fuck me.

I've been following SS/Strong Lifts protocols strictly, which are BB focused programs. I'm starving to customize the programs, mostly out of boredom.

Customize. If something like switching to DBs every few weeks energizes you then do it I say. It's not like rotating BB and DB will impede your progress. It might speed it up actually.

I agree, better to add a bit to keep yourself "entertained" than to get bored and ultimately unmotivated. Just don't get carried away.

Think I'm going to take today off. I'm pretty sure my body wants to recover today, and putting 200lbs over my head is probably the wrong answer.

lol. Probably. I'm gonna max on OHP Monday. I usually finish 165x4 so I'm hoping to get 190-195 once. Just typing that hurts my lower back!

I been in a gym rut for a while now, I've pretty much only been going so I don't get fat again. I'm bored out of my mind when I go, does anyone have a good routine I could use? I'm 6"2" 250-255lbs. I'm trying to shrink down to 215-225lbs. It seems that no matter what I do I'm just stuck.... and also very very bored.

Probably can't tell from the pic but I have a huge gut. Start weight was 350lbs so I guess I can't complain.

Welp,

1. There's always the routine in the OP. If you want to get fancy: http://board.crossfit.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=5781&d=1265323011

2. Your diet determines your body weight and body fat levels, not your gym routine. How is your diet?

3. What's your current routine like?

Edit:

I'm jealous of you guys hitting PRs. I won't be hitting PRs until next year with this current diet I'm on. Well, not gym PRs anyway. There will be plenty of scale PRs as I go down from 250 to 215.

Double edit:
Are those gloves?

The weight loss you desire will be achieved almost entirely by diet. Stick around 2,000 calories and lift hard. Tell me your routine and maybe I can offer you some suggestions based on my experience.

2000 is pretty low for a 250 lb man. Where are you getting this number from?

It's low but he can get his 250 g's of protein at that amount. I'm sure he can lose at 2500 a day but the fat would fly off at 2000.

You're going standing right? Try without a belt if you can. I don't use belts, straps or gloves for anything. Although, if you're more comfortable with a belt, so be it.

I did 225 press back last summer when I went through all my 1rms. Last week I did 195 3x5, and I WAS going to do 200 3x5 today. I think 245 is pretty much a given for me given my progress, and 265 is what I really want. (and would put me at elite for press).

I just want my back/body in perfect condition for the 1RM next week, so I'll probably go light on DLs next week.

Brolic Gaoler

Damn you and your monster strength, Shogun. The standing press is my worst lift due to my pelvic tilt.

Be happy in the fact your squats probably dominate mine.

Plus most of you guys are much thinner builds, I am not.

Sucks about the pelvic tilt though. :(
