Seems like your form was not good if you stalled. In my experience people reaching deep down just overcompensate with other muscle groups. I hope your next one is cleaner now that y know you can do it.

Not sure what I would have compensated with. It's not like I bounced or did something other than press. Thanks though I guess.

When I see people explaining "digging down deep" it usually ends up being calf or back tensing up. Its pretty hard to just recruit significantly more muscle fibres mid-motion like on a stall.

I'm specifically talking about the transition between getting the weight up, and getting your body under it. That takes a bit, especially for a 1rm. That's the point in which the bar "stalls" for me while I try to get under the bar.

Shit's heavy man and it takes a bit to get that last little "in and up."

Also, how would someone use their calves to assist in a press!?

Perhaps I'm just misunderstanding you.

Does anyone know of any workouts that revolve around total reps per exercise as opposed to any specific rep/set values?

For example, today you go to the gym and get 30 total reps of pull-ups without going to failure. Once the reps slow down, stop. So you may do 3 sets of 10, or 6 sets of 5 .. doesn't matter so long as you hit the reps.

Oh nm. That's not the stalling I was thinking about.

You don't want to use your calves to assist.

I kinda do that now, I aim for 3x5, but any reps I miss get added to the end in a 4th (or 5th if need be) set.

On a side note, I have tied my personal bests for complete 3x5 at press and bench this week. Next week maybe I break them (despite having lost over 60 lbs in the last 7 months).

Haha, yeah not hundreds of reps. For example, 5x5 is 25 reps. Instead of forcing yourself to do 5 sets of 5 reps .. maybe you do a set of 7 to start, then 6, then 4, etc .. until you get 25.

I think it's important that people are not hitting failure even if the program calls for them to hit a certain number of reps. Either you rest longer, or you save reps in the tank for another. No big deal I think.

Holy dick tits I did OHP for the first time today. It was at the end of my (arm) workout, so I didn't expect much, but wow it was more challenging than I thought it would be. Went from 0 reps @ 95lbs --> 1 rep @ 85lbs --> 3 reps @ 75lbs --> 6, 8, 6 reps @ 65lbs. Gained tons of respect for the guys in here who are pressing as much as they are. (Shogun 1RM'd 245!?)

You will get there man, just keep at it, but don't get in a hurry, that's how injuries happen.

That reminds me, my belt came in over the weekend. I'm currently trying to break the bitch in, my god it's stiff.

Yeah, I can probably do only 155 for 1 rep. That's insane.

You guys are also a lot lighter than I am. I'm just happy I can press a bit over my weight now.

I'd be ecstatic if I could press my bodyweight. Very nice on the press. Weird workouts this week for me, feel like I'm breaking down with upper body workouts - not doing so hot in bench/press but I managed to get a PR on squat. Hopefully it's just an off week.

Well, after training for a while I was able to run my first half marathon. I did the Las Vegas Rock and Roll Half Marathon on the 4th. What I discovered though is that I don't really like my shoes, so I'm looking for some recommendations. I see ones with what looks likes shocks in them. Are those any good?

I am actually pretty proud of my press numbers, with a weight of 150 (5'10") I can do 95x5 and 115 1rm. It's not thy much, but I've made a lot of progress since I started.

Seems like a good snack, as long as they taste good. Plus if there is too much sugar you can take out honey I suppose.

Just make sure you eat them relatively quick...I made the mistake of letting mine go uneaten for weeks, and the next time I had one it was rancid. Tasted like SHIT. Waste of protein powder + probably half a pan of the bars.

1) Melt the pb, honey, chocolate in the microwave
2) mix it in with the dry ingredients, add water until you get a consistency that is difficult, but not impossible to spread
3) spread evenly in pan, stick in fridge
4) melty stuff gets hard again and you are good to go.

On the eat them quick side of things, between my brother and I we easily eat 8/week. He eats like a monster since he has started wrestling for his high school.

Its this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dv-LcIC5gtc&list=FLRmT64sQ295viRrTdiH8oGw&index=9&feature=plpp_video
With modified ingredients to increase protein and cut some of the carbs.

Would it be wise to take a meal replacement and whey protein supplement on the same days?

I would be taking the whey protein on gym days only and the meal replacement on most days.

Should be eating protein consistently bro, about the same every day (workout and non workout) - you're meant to cut back the carbs on non workout days.
As for your meal replacement, i have no idea what's in it nor what your goals are, without any background there is no answer.
I'd personally never use 'meal replacement' supplements as i believe they're only meant to 'add' to your diet.

I'm bulking, what do you mean what's in it?

I'm using it to help with my diet.

Question about Starting Strength: Since you alternate the A and B workouts only 3 times a week that means you do one of them only once a week right? So do you do A/B/A or B/A/B i.e. do you press twice a week or do you deadlift/bench press twice a week? Or are you meant to alternate the two possibilities as well?

Yeah you do ABA one week, then BAB the other. So one week you'll end up doing dead lifts/bench press twice, and the other, press and power cleans/rows twice. You'll do squats 3 times a week of course.

Posted this in the weight loss thread, but I know many of you guys stick to the Fitness thread.

Here's a good case study for those obsessing over the scale. Dude lost a grand total of 12 lbs, but underwent an amazing transformation. Don't obsess over the scale, guys, especially if you're doing resistance work.

70's Big - Sweet Potato Hash Browns (YouTube)

Mmmm .. eating that dish right now. They're delicious.
Alright, I know what's on my shopping list today.

I have sweet potato in my garden but for some reason I've not been able to get any decent ones. Maybe I'm not pulling them out at the right time. They tend to have holes all in them and I'm not sure what's eating them. I know they are always covered in ants. I eat the leaves anyway. I got my starters from my friends who have it growing all over their yard and they have the same problem with holes. It's a tasty one though; I've dug through their yard and collected enough useable pieces to make a pie, and it was awesome.

Yeah those weightloss guys are cantankerous. He still lost 21lbs of fat and gained 8 lbs of muscle over the course of a year.

I'd be cantankerous too if I were fat.

Hey now, I weighed myself this morning, 198, the first time I've been under 200lbs since...95ish? I've got at LEAST another 10-15 to lose, but I'm cantankerous because I'm a jackass. It has nothing to do with my being slightly overweight.
