So someone asked you when you're done with a station a few times, big deal.

Personally, I try my best not to get angry at stupid shit at my gym, it tend to fuck with my concentration.

Once or twice, no issue at all. Coming back a 3rd time, with you boy in tow...

As an aside, my gym is huge, with 3 power rack and enough space to do anything you want anywhere you want. The spot I was using is the only one with bumper plates... but it`s a favourite of a lot of lifters, because it`s the only spot that allows you to look at yourself in the mirror from the front and the side.

Wow.
I think we might be going to the same gym.

How long were you there doing deadlifts?!? 20 minutes just at the end or total? I'm assuming just total which isn't that bad. Were you using the only barbell rack?

Yeah couldn`t have been more than 20. Nope, my gym has 3 racks.

Chichikov... nope, canadian. :p

Age:26
Weight: 180
BF%: Less than 15%
Time Training: Six Years total. Two years of bodybuilding, which sucked, two years of Crossfit, which was the most stupid shit I ever did in my life (don't mean to offend), and two years of standard strength and conditioning training. Fun fact, the best I ever looked was now, doing 5/3/1, not freaking out about my diet too much, and still drinking occasionally. So, there's that.

Glad to be part of NeoGAF. If anybody has any supplement, steroid, PCT, or fitness questions, I'm happy to help. I've got plenty of injuries from my own mistakes.

Pissed off about my lifting today, actually. Doing my deadlifts day for 5/3/1, and fucked up on my final lift. Pulled without my back proper on the fourth rep and messed up my upper abs. Feels awesome.

If you even remotely half serious about running, you should at the very least log your miles per week.

when i am serious about running, and training for a race in particular, i don't actually write down my miles, but i go to a set running schedule and mix up the runs (long and short runs weekend, 2 tempo runs during the week usually, increasing the long and tempo runs each week to dial up the mileage - i do have mileage goals each week and divide them up accordingly).

right now i'm just running for fun - nothing like cutting loose after work/class and going for a topless jog

Then I could see asking twice if you had stepped away or something, but the third time with his bud was definitely a DB move.

Anyone have a good video or resource for tips on high-bar squats?

Starting Strength and Stronglifts seem to focus exclusively on the low-bar variety, which I'd like to do, but I'm not quite flexible enough in my shoulders and chest yet. I've started doing shoulder dislocations and other stretches recommended by the Stronglifts guy but I'm not quite there yet, so in the meantime I'll have to do high bar squats.

Question about close/diamond push ups.

Feeling a lot of pressure on my shoulders when doing them, borders on discomfort. Checking my form via a mirror and it looks fine. Probably need to strengthen my shoulders.

Just wondering if others have experienced this and if it goes away with training.

I've been wanting to join a MMA gym here in town for awhile. Last night I went to a local 9 card fight at Harrah's and I think it pushed me over the edge. I'm gonna go down Tuesday and talk to a few gyms. I can't think of many things more fun than inviting everyone I know to come down and see me fight in the cage. I'll keep you guys updated. I'm guessing I'll fight at 175 and judging by the guys I saw last night fighting at that weight I will have a significant strength advantage.

EDIT: I've decided to have my torn ACL repaired before I start. Probably a smart move.

hey all,

just wondering how much cardio would be too much and whether it could hamper my strength gains?

at the moment i'm 22yo, 6"2 (~187cm), 73-74kg (~160lb) and my routine is this;
sunday - light cardio (cross trainer/bike) / leg workout
monday - spin class (bike) (1 hour)
tuesday - indoor soccer/futsal (1 hour)
wednesday - back/triceps
thursday - indoor soccer/futsal (1 hour)
friday - chest/shoulders
saturday - heavy cardio (run anywhere from 5km-10km on treadmill)

i'm lean but i'd like to harden up more and gain some more muscle definition.. i believe i'm sitting on 11% bf (according to the gym scales i used)

anyways, i've only been casually gymming 3-4 days for the last few months and on/off following a program a gym training set up for me. i don't really like it and am thinking of starting stronglift 5x5 next time i head there. is this a good idea?

some of the weights i'm doing are measly, 50kg (110lb) squats and the same in bench (not including bar).. whereas some exercises like bicep/tricep curl aren't too bad, 54kg (118lb) quite easily. i think my body is out of proportion.

anyways, how much cardio is too much? i'm easily doing 5km treadmill in around 21 mins and feel i can go harder.. i feel fit and believe i'm healthy, but the muscles just aren't really progressing.

fakeedit: bolded my real questions.

Hey did you gents miss my question up there? Is it asked so often you're trained to ignore it?

My mistake, I'll start searching through the thread more thoroughly.

It doesn't come up very often. I think the last time consensus was to look for garage sales etc and buy it used.

Stronglift 5x5 is an okay program. It's biggest problem is the amount of volume you'll be doing every other day. 25 squats/press/bench is A LOT of volume and you will plateau on it. What it is decent for finding a good starting weight for a better linear progression program, Starting Strength being the most recognized. I prefer the Grayskull LP, as it has a lot more longevity, but the choice is yours.

The amount of cardio you have could be considered a bit too much. Really, if you're already lean, you're gonna need to grow some muscle and eat right to get the look you're going for. If you must do conditioning, I'd recommend short intense interval training, with barbell complexes mixed in, rather than LSD. Hill sprints, prowler, tabata sprints, etc. won't effect your gains too much. They're also easier to recover from and will build more power. Plus, barbell complexes are great if you can't really train a full session but want something that takes less than 30 minutes to kick your ass.

Just my opinion, somebody else may know more.

Dear Gaf I out of curiosity mixed up my protein powder to the actual specification on the tub ...

What the fuck?

Before I had just been mixing a couple of table spoons of this stuff into a pint of milk ... however following the instructions, instead of getting a milkshake you get like a thick lump of mud ... being a man I drank it anyway ...

... holy fuck that was gross ...

Seriously do you guys actually mix this shit up like they say on the box?

Nope, I mix vanilla soy milk, oats and strawberry whey, or chocolate soy with chocolate whey. It comes out as a nice smooth milkshake.

I actually do more.

I do 2 scoops into a glass of milk or into a shaker about half full of milk.

I do that about 2-3 times a day, but I need 200 or so grams of protein a day.

I have a mug with a wire ball shaker in it that breaks down the powder. I use 2 scoops ON GS + 500 ml milk for about 500-600 calories and 70g protein.

I chop it up and snort it. Hits the blood stream faster that way.

Hmmm my protein powder says to put 3 scoops (150cc) into 200ml of water ... that makes it on volume about 1.5:2 between the powder and milk ... aka you get mud out ...

What protein powder is this?

And jesus christ, those instructions are not set in stone. The protein powder is not going to be absorbed any less well by your body if you deviate from them.

Make your food the way you like it. If it is too muddy, try putting more water or milk or whatever.

And 3 scoops? I usually go one scoop, MAX 2 with whey/casein. Are you using a weight gainer?

They might be trying to get you to buy more of their shit by finishing off their product quicker. There is only so much protein you can process at one time.

I signed up to the gym just over 2 weeks ago now, and part of the deal was to receive three 45 minute sessions with a Personal Trainer. I got a call from my PT on Friday and it turns out she's a woman. I'm meant to be meeting her at lunchtime tomorrow.

Is it normal to be assigned a female PT? I haven't seen any female PTs helping guys at this gym so far so it kind of threw me off guard.

I'm confused because I stated my goals as to bulk up, gain weight and put on lean muscle. These goals aren't typically associated with females so I'm not sure what to think. I mean, would she make a reliable spotter etc?

I hope this doesn't come across as sexist, I'm just surprised they assigned me a female.

I don't see why not, guys train women all the time.

I think guys don't like having female trainers because they don't like being told what to do by women.

If I needed a trainer, I'd want a woman, gives ya motivation. ;)

BTW yeah, sometimes the female trainers at my golds have male clients.

I used to work as a trainer at the club I go to now, and can say that none of the females there, or males for that matter, knew the first thing about adding lean mass.

Many were decent at athletic training, but half of them (both male and female) are 20-28 year olds who just put people through extremely odd and sometimes unsafe workouts for an hour and collect their money. The older trainers were definitely better, but they're no Glenn Pendlay or anything.

It really depends on what gym you're at. If it's a fitness center like mine, you'll find no strength coaches or the like there. It's all trainers who teach people the basics (and even then that's stretching it). All you need is 1 certification that you can get from buying a book and studying for a month and you can train people with injuries -- pretty sad.

Hell, the old nutritionist that was there when I was there used to argue with me that anything about 1/2 of bodyweight for protein in grams was bad for people and would lead to a host of internal problems, kidney stones, etc. I used to look at the diet plans she'd give people and it was basically a C&P of the old horrendous Food Pyramid.

And X-Frame, I hope that isn't the case here. I signed up to one of the better gyms in London so I'm hoping I'll find the right help. I've done a decent amount of research myself so I'll know what to avoid if they end up being terrible.

I do. There's debate as to how much your body processes from one pill and how much of it you piss out. I'm more partial to leaning on the multivitamins that have more substance from plant based produces rather than manmade minerals. My personal favorite is the Rainbow Light Men's One Multivitamins. You can get 150 pills for 16.65 or 90 pills for 11.05, from an Amazon vendor, with prime shipping. Good Stuff.

a question of etiquette,

do you guys shower in the gym or no?

i havent been in the gym since winter time and lately ive just been doing running and abs + calisthenics at home. im concerned about going to the gym, getting sweaty as fuck and come back home using the subway and bus and pissing everyone off with my BO. wasnt a big deal during the winter time since i was covered in layers of clothing but its like 85 on average outside so i wont have the same luxury.

i would probably have to just shower, but some days i might not get a chance to. i may sound like a dirty freak but those that dont shower in the gym, what do you do to prevent your BO from pissing everyone off?

I wouldn't set foot in a public shower. I don't feel comfortable being naked around random people that I'm not intending on having sex with. Especially old men that seem to just hang out in the locker room, for no apparent reason. Seriously, that shit is weird.

The easy work around is wearing a spare shirt and gym shorts and change at the gym. Then, put on some antiperspirant. Then, go home and shower. It sucks to use two pairs of clothing, but if you don't sweat too bad in the second set you can wear the clothing for the next time you go to the gym. If you're really concerned, you can always do the clothing swap and then spray on some Axe. You'll smell like a 16 year old that doesn't understand what good cologne smells like, but it'll be better then smelling like an armpit. Rinsing your hair out in the sink and giving it a quick towel dry can help, too.

I find that post about starting strength and similar programs being geared towards the arnold wannabe's amusing.... if anything my body type is much closer to the "abercrombie model" than a bodybuilder.

Infact one of the draw backs to being relatively small compared to the weights I put up, is the lack of proper gym etiquette or respect some of these bigger guys show.

The other day, I was doing deadlifts and warming up at 175lb, guy comes up to me and ask how many sets i have left. No big deal, I tell him i'm just starting out, and i'll be here for a while. So 5 mins later, I'm at 2-something guy comes back again with his buddy now, asks again how many sets I have left. Slightly annoyed, I tell him again I still have a few more to go.

Would you believe this motherfucker came back a third time in a span of maybe 20mins? Of course at this point I was preparing to lift 405 and he didnt say anything, just kind of stood there wide eyed as I repped out.

I was so annoyed, I didn`t even bother to unrack the weight, just said here you go, and walked off.
Why take up the squat rack to do deadlifts. Those can be done in any 8x5 foot section of the gym floor.

Real talk to all weight lift warrior: deadlifting in the squat rack is the same as curling in the squat rack. It's a misuse of the equipment.

I was just curious if anyone else actually drank it 'mud' like.

If anyone's curious this is the shit

Was the first thing I found, so I really have no idea if this is actually any good or what, however I've already gone up a few kg's while feeling much stronger and it tastes pretty nice.

At my gym, this old guy who is a regular always pretends like he's an opera singer or something when he's in the locker room. He used to be a professional tuba player, I think, so he often makes tuba sounds too. I love it when the locker room is full of young bros and this fat old guy comes in singing his arias, blaring his tubas. The bros get so wonderfully silent and awkward, and scoot out as quickly as possible. The guy really does not give one single fuck. I wish I can be like him when I'm old.

I use Kaizen brand whey. 35g protein per 41g scoop. Find me protein powder with a higher protein ratio than that!
