Ugh I can't seem to get back on track. Getting moved into the new house was the most stressful thing I've ever gone through. Add to that work and finishing up school and I had to take the last 2-3 weeks off. Trying to get back on track but it's one step forward, one step back. Only had time for the bare minimum reps today, and my rep max is off like 40lbs. I have also lost like 9 lbs in the past 3 weeks.

Ugh.

You should be happy that he helped you improve. This is why people take videos of themselves or have someone watch them. You can't see how your form really is while you are lifting.

You can improve your form for the rest of your time lifting.

Yeah. He was actually very nice about it, and he was right. I have taken video of myself before since there are no mirrors or anything, and I don't have any gym buddies anymore, but I guess I'm still having trouble getting the form right. I just try to tell myself to keep at it, until I get it right I guess.

Well it has been a fun 3 months, butI think I am going to have to stop GOMAD. I thought I was impervious to bad breakouts but it is getting a little out of hand this week for some reason. Now I just hope it is reversible so I don't have to go through an awkward pizza face phase while I am in college...

My body feels done for. My last workout a couple days ago was amazing, but I've felt so fucked since then, plus i did something weird to my back when I was sleeping last night. One of my ribs hurts like hell at the point in your back where the ribs connect to the spine. Fuck, really dont know if I can workout tomorrow.

Double over as long as you can. I can double overhand 405 right now for reps because I went this route.

I saw a vid where a guy wraps his hands over his thumbs for the over or underhand grip. Is that the proper way to grip for deadlifting? I found that was one of my biggest issues when I moved up in weight, my grip declined after about 3-4 continuous reps. But I tried wrapping the thumbs today and it felt better. No gloves by the way, thanks to Gaf advice.

That's called a hook grip, and you CAN do that, but it can fuck your thumb up.

Thanks to all who suggested rotator cuff "warm-ups"...I did them throughout the day and before my workout and my shoulder was MUCH more limber...much appreciated.

Anyone have any cable fly variations I could try out? I do incline low cables and a high-low fly super-set but wanted to see if anyone saw benefits in another style...thanks again.

Well, congrats on the new house, I know it's a pain in the ass at first (and I have no idea what unique complications you got to deal with) but in a few months it will be sweet and hopefully feel like you've always lived there. In less time than that your training will get back on track, I'm certain of that.

I tried the hook grip for a week and couldn't stick with it. Felt like my thumb was going to be ripped off.

When are the best times during the day to consume protein shakes? I'm reading conflicting reports online. In the past I'd do it after my workout but given that I won't be going to the gym until after I finish work (5pm), is it good to do so at any point prior as well?

What are your goals? Bulking or cutting?

Someone did that to me on Pendalay Rows. I was glad he did, I dropped the weight, corrected that, and now I've progressed higher than where I had plateu'd with the incorrect form.

Somebody corrected my form today at the gym. I'm absolutely distraught. I keep hearing his words in my head over and over. It's driving me nuts, and it's ruining my day. and the very advice he gave me was what I had been telling myself in my head. "Keep your chest up," but I guess I was doing it incorrectly.

I would pair them with meals, personally.

Ugh, this diet... I have an idea of what I am doing but still, there is so much conflicting information out there, it gets to be frustrating. If I eat too little carbs, I look deflated. If I eat too much, I feel bloated. Combine that with the fact that I don't know how many grams I should eat due to various information, it tends to be overwhelming.

Definitely the worst part about training.

Bought Kinetica Chocolate mint flavour protein shake. Fuck me.
Its like a liquid aero. Taste and smell are unreal. A step above Met Rx whey (taste wise)for sure. Makes for a great evening treat before bed. I wonder how long i will go before I am sick of it. Have to cut down gym sessions for 4 to 2 a week cuz of it exams.
Hopefully get on the dole this summer so I can get back to 6 days week training and out on some size.

Personally I take 2 different protein shakes.

I take Serious Mass, which is a weight gainer/meal replacement.

I take this 2, but mostly 3 times a day.

Once with my breakfast, as we are very depleted of protein after the night's sleep.

Once about 45-60 minutes before I go to bed, as we will need the protein during the night.

I also take one when im at work because I usually have 4-5 hour shifts and im not allowed to eat, so i sneak one in about 2-3 hours into my shift.

My second protein shake is 100% gold standard protein isolate, which is designed to be used straight after a workout as it gets straight into the system very quickly which is perfect for post workout supplement.

Right now I personally hook grip during my warm ups and then go to a mixed grip for my 1x5 work set. Eventually I am told the hook grip will be stronger than mixed, but I'm not quite there yet. Worth working on though.

Broscience 101

Also 4 protein shakes a days seems like a waste of money.

There's nothing magic about carbs. If you look deflated ( carb depleted) then you're carb depleted. If you're eating on a deficit and are still able to manage a certain degree of intensity with your training, then everything is good.

Hook grip is great if you have a great bar to work with and your fingers are long enough. Mine are long enough, but I struggle with the bars at LA Fitness. Now if I could use some chalk...

Hook grip hurts like a motherfucker. My fingers are on the average side, though. I can barely palm a men's basketball.

Yeah, it works great for some people. I have small hands, so I prefer double over for warm up and working up to my last work set, then just doing mixed grip.

I also rest the bar on the ground between reps too, resetting each time. So strain on my grip isn't as bad. I've also found resting the bar between reps to be better for strength gain too. Prevents you from bouncing the weight and all that jazz. Just gotta be sure to reset correctly each time.

I can't even do that, lol.

Im making all kind of muscle gains and im letting that guy know what works for me.

You're a novice, you're going to make "all kind of muscle gains" regardless of that tripe you just posted as advice.

and you know fuck all about me, except for the occasional post I make here.

You're right, and what I'm posting has to do with what you're posting here. If you're gonna get all butthurt go cry somewhere else.

Yeah Drealmcc0y, what you posted isn't necessarily wrong but the idea behind it isn't needed. Being protein deprived in the morning? What does that really mean? Same as taking a shake before going to bed. It won't hurt if you do take it but you aren't at an advantage if you do.

Butthurt? Like a give a fuck.

O wait, I guess me replying equals me being butthurt and giving a fuck.

Congratz you win over the internet, once again.

The body is not good at storing protein right?

Well it makes sense that the time you need it the most is before and after sleep, when you go so long without it. Including after a workout.

I mean doesn't Jay Cutler wake up at 2am to take a protein shake?

Building muscle in our case isn't nearly that serious.

Come here for advice but beware on giving it out.
Cut him some slack, he was just sharing what's working for him..

Anyways, for the others coming in here with creatine questions and whatnot I would like to say that it is working quite well for me. I can feel it in those last reps/sets. Then again I also believe in the positive attitude/energy in the gym, so that could be a factor.

On top of that I have been making all kinds of gains in places that have been stagnant for a while, feels great!!

How long to you guys think it takes for your body to get "too familiar" with your workout?

Settle down, fellas. If the body was that bad at storing that there protein, most of the human race would be fucked. Getting into the mindset that you must douse your body with protein shakes every 3-4 hours, lest your muscles dissolve, is what the supplement companies want you to think so you can keep buying their products.

This sucks, I have sciatica, it's not severe but it's a dull ache that takes a few days to go away right around the back/butt/hip area. I guess I'll have to cut back on the deadlifts/squats for a bit.

Sorry to hear that bud. Injuries always suck ass. I hope your recovery is a swift one.

Guys at the very cutting edge of physical conditioning probably have their nutrient intake down to the milligram but I doubt anyone here is at that level. Even still i cant imagine it's a huge difference either way.

I've cut my whey protein down to a half a scoop with my oatmeal in the morning for flavor. It's situationally useful if you're trying to gain mass I suppose but meh. If anything I should be taking fish oil. Maybe cycle creatine now and again for strength gains during the winter. Other than that everything else is of dubious use.

Good whole foods and plenty of it is my focus now.

At what part did I say you have to take protein shakes every 3-4 hours?

Food is always better than shakes.

I just use it as food costs a lot of money and I need 5000 calories a day, which is hard to get from food alone. Its hard for me to gain weight

I got that vibe from your post as well. It came off that you need to have several protein shakes a day every few hours so that your body won't use muscle as fuel.
