on 5/3/1 I rest a long time between sets. It's actually the most frustrating part of going to the gym for me. Sitting there and recovering is just a little boring - except when I do squats. When I do squats, rest time between sets is like waiting to walk up to the gallows
It's funny cause it's true. I love exercise and I was thinking to myself on Friday 'but I hate squats!'. Sometimes it takes me like 5-6 seconds to get back up in a standing position because of the heavy load, my face being the color of blood with the veins on my neck and temple popping out.

I just started doing deadlifts this week. How much soreness in my lower back is normal? My back isn't so much "sore" as it is tight.
I say three weeks and you will have a basic 'frame' in place.
Three weeks ago I couldn't lift my current deadlift weight minus 15KG (33lbs). No chance to even move it. Tomorrow I'm going to increase my current with 10KG (22lbs), it's taking off like a rocket.
I've been through four weeks on the beginners program.

Weird, I love cutting and always do it hardcore. I think I'm just crazy though.

I'm just new to weight training and cardio. I have no issues maintaining a sound diet considering I've lost 165+ pounds over the last 2 or so years, but most of that was without any exercise, so I'm new to restricting food on top of the hunger that weight training/cardio forces on your body.

I'll definitely be able to do it since I'm pretty fucking determined to finish off my body transformation, it's just going to suck :)

Put up 75lb dumbbells on Incline today for 8 and 5 reps. Very pleased. That's the most I've ever done.

My diet has sucked fucking ass though. I've been eating like shit. Gotta clean it up, ugh.

Okay what the fuck. Last three weeks I've eaten less than 80g of carbs a day with some lifting. I've clearly lost fat. I look thinner and things fit looser. I weighed about 152 before this, then didn't eat for a day because of some shit and I went down to 148. Water weight loss but after that I was consistently 148 in the morning. I hadn't weighed myself since around that time.

Now Ive been eating right, look right, and I weighed myself this morning at 146. Do you think this is actual fat loss or did I only lose 2 pounds? I was feeling great until I saw the scale and now I am so bummed.

That's early August to now.

Very insecure post. I weigh 189 right now. I lift decent weight, run, swim, bike fairly fast and have decent measurements. But because I am hairy and still feel fat, I think all of my photos suck.

the way I see it, this is how it works in this thread.

before/afters should be done with pics 3 months apart, if not a wider interval.

once that's clear, make sure the "after" pic specifically shows the area with results and make sure you are flexing in both. Don't take generic pics, think about the angle.

if you have been doing decent workout, everyone we'll see the difference if you respect the time thing. If you are considering sharing here, don't sweat it and give it a go.

and don't take the internet too seriously :)

Yeah no more after pics for me until January. But I'm still snapping a monthly pic.

Btw, 315 on deads today. Next goal? 405 of course!!

Hmm would any of you know what type of injury this might be? For the last few days, my right arm (liike right above my bicep, and below my shoulder (maybe the greater pectoral it's called) has felt like I've just had a flu shot (that sore, kinda tense sensation). I didn't feel any pain or tear or anything while lifting the last week, but anyway, I go to lean on my right arm while laying down and this muscle lights up with a searing pain and my entire arm feels like it's just turned to jellow and is going to get crushed by my body weight. After that it went back to being a tense/sore flu shot feeling (even more than before).

It's just weird to me since I don't remember any possible way I could've hurt that muscle, in or out of the gym. It kinda just came about when I woke up one morning.

Hmm, could it be from doing too many dumbbell flys?

It kind of makes sense though. If you are doing 45 minutes of cardio activity in the morning, you realize the effort it took to burn those 400-500 calories. Making it less likely for you to want to overeat or sneak in some junk food on the side.

I'm having a real hard time cutting. Got no will power to say no to friends and family who invite me to all these restaurants, then end up ordering shit.

I just googled "Cutting Bulking Cycle" and what a mess.

Lots of forums with different opinions, mixed heresay/broscience with what seem to be facts from professionals.

For someone new to this process like me, that's awful.

and the worst part is that probably everybody is right because it's all depending on the goals...

in general terms I am as disoriented as a month ago, no matter what how much I read about it (not that I've read all there is but I try).

" hey! do cardio after workout! = "NO!! IT'S BAD! don't do cardio after, muscles will fade away"
" hey! eat 5 times a day with mixed nutrients" = "NO!! just three with lots of beef, boiled eggs and tuna!!"
"hey! train/workout everyday different bodyparts" = "NO! take free days, rest and allow your body to gain strenght back"

it's annoying.

I think I'm going to have a real easy cut. Just stop drinking sodas, eating ice cream, drinking milk so much and junk food (yes, I'm a hard gainer).

It's not that difficult. What do you want to know. Here I'll help.

Cardio won't melt your muscle away.
Eat however many freaking meals you want.
You should probably have some rest days and train like 4x per week. Do cardio on your non lifting days if you want. Whatever just listen to your body. It will let you know.

Long time fitness lurker first time poster here!

I've been lifting trying to do SS since about February. Over the course of a couple of months however, I was unable to lift and in turn decided to stop tracking calories and macros. Now though, I've been back lifting 3 times a week for about 2-3 months, and man I cannot be more excited. I just weighed myself the other day for the first time in months and I'm at 205lbs. Holy shit. I started at 180lbs and the last time I weighed myself was at 190lbs. I went into my calorie counter and checked what my fitness goal was when I started this whole thing: 210lbs. I am so close without even realizing! I realized however, that this to me today is not much, so I bumped my goal to 220lbs.

I absolutely cannot freaking wait, just have to bulk a little longer, then by the time winter rolls around, I'm in cocoon mode cutting for the a glorious spring.

Seeing the benefit of hard work coming into fruition is absolutely why I adore fitness. Also, hoo-ah! for the bulkers ;)

Hah! Same here my friend, my gym (YMCA) had a deadlift challenge posted so I pushed myself and hit 315 for the first time ever. It felt good and according to my witness it looked good too!

should I use perfect push up or just do normal pushups?

PPUP.jpg

moved into a new apartment and my roommate has these so I started using them. They are harder than normal pushups. I was doing 5-sets of 30 pushups every day, or other day. I can usually only do around 15 pushups in a set w/ the perfect pushup.

As opposed to the posters having trouble on a cut, I've been doing intermittent fasting and it has yielded glorious results. The meal size gives you incredible satiety, really filling you up as opposed to eating a bunch of puny meals throughout the day.

Strength gains are going great, too.

They allow you to go deeper, meaning more resistance (thats why they're harder) and they're easier on the wrist. I see no reason not to use them.

So, fizzy drinks are a no-no regardless of any sugar-free/carb-free/diet claims, right?

I'm trying to give up the cola/energy drinks and I'm wondering if I'm craving sugar or if it's something psychological that I will get over eventually.

Has anyone ever been to Koko Head Mountain in O'ahu (Hawaii)?

My friends and I wanted to try something a little different then beach every day and I saw these stairs in an episode of Hawaii Five-O and had to try them when I went. Check this out, it's steps straight up the mountain. Took 30 minutes to get to the top.

Almost done! You can see where we started where the shadow from the clouds meet the steps, all the way down there.

Three weeks? A pound a week of fat loss seems about right. Usually with carb reduction there's a big drop initially as you drop a little water weight. I wouldn't think of fat loss as taking weeks though, it's more of a months thing. If you want to lose 10 pounds for example, that's usually about 2-3 months.

Are those stairs or an old railway? Either way that's awesome. Makes the climb up the Cahokia mounds main mound seem tiny.

Either way thanks for the pics, that's cool as hell.

It definitely has the railroad tracks, but I assume it's only to keep the stairs in place because it is straight up a mountain, and I doubt that a train engineer thought it'd be a good place to put real train tracks for trains to go up, haha.

And it was a real cool hike up there, but it was a pain to get down. I'm a little afraid of heights, so when I was looking down from the top I was a little scared, not going to lie, haha. But then we saw locals just sprinting down and I couldn't believe it. I guess they do it all the time.

That would make sense, I would wanna fashion a sled that could ride on the tracks and ride that bitch all the way down.

I don't normally do BB stuff or machines, but I started integrating cable rows back in to my routine as accessory work. Forgot what a fun exercise that is.

Adding a fourth workout / outdoors running in two weeks time (after have given the full body beginners routine w/cutting diet six weeks of isolated time). So looking forward to that.

I just started doing them on weekends. Did it at 5 this morning; it was dark when we started, had to use flashlights. So far I'm ranging around 25 minutes, but today I took 30 because of the dark and waiting for people without flashlights.

It was originally to run supplies up to the bunker at the top. I don't know anything about old rail technology but that's what it was, afaik.

Going down sucks. I don't know how people run it. I'll run the bottom part where it's not so steep, but the top half I step down one step at a time. I always switch lead leg every few steps so my muscles work evenly, and that is the only interesting thing about going down--finding that rhythm of switching legs when there are lots of spots where you have to change your foot position because the step is rotted out or a concrete slab is at such an angle that you don't want to step and slip on it. The dust makes everything so slippery. It sucks.

Going up is an amazing cardio workout though.

Wow, that's awesome man! I think they're tons of fun, but I don't know about going to the top every time. I'd probably use them to go up and down until the crack in the mountain, then back down or something. Then again, the feeling of success to go to the top would win over my personality every time, I couldn't just stop half way, haha.

And that seems dangerous to go that early when you need flashlights .. I almost slipped plenty of times, but my shoes weren't really for hiking so maybe if you have some more off-road shoes it'll be easier.

Wow, that makes a lot of sense. I didn't even realize there was a bunker of there. That's really cool.

And about running down, I agree. It mostly seemed to have been younger guys and teenagers, but that seems terrible for your knees to do that and I don't see them keeping that up for long. Not to mention that there's no point in running down anyway, at least from a workout point of view. Yeah it's faster though but at the cost of your knees? No way.

I used to drink 1-2 liters/day of Mountain Dew a day (for over 10 years). I quit by switching to Mio/storebrand knockoffs. They sell varieties that have caffeine in them to give you the kick. They are also very sweet .. so it's an easier transition to make.

You will get crazy sugar cravings and you might find yourself polishing off entire boxes of candy or a dozen cookies ... but they eventually go away. Just don't beat yourself up and feel like a loser if you go on a sugar binge. Just try not to make a daily habit of it.

I think I'm going to start lifting in the morning to try and conjure some more hours out of my day. Any tips from you early birds?

So frustrated at with cutting. Been doing it for literally a year. Pretty much stalled out in Jun. Can't get below 230 @ 20%.

I need to be 12% but my body won't let me. I've tried literally everything I can think of.

The outside of my left knee has been bothering me these last two days. It's a weird injury, it only flares up if I've been sitting around for a little bit. After I walk around for a while it feels fine. I don't know if I should lift tomorrow or what. Should I just take it easy?

I go at 6am on the weekends.

Caffeine, two alarms and the smug satisfaction of knowing that you are going to be one of 3 or 4 people there that early.

I usually do back on Saturday and shoulders or arms on Sundays .. so I will start off with a little warmup cardio to get the blood flowing (10 min. on an elliptical at max effort).

...hate me...
I can't believe I finally got a rack. So excited for tomorrow!

Of course, I will keep on dreaming about a cage, for maximum bench safety and additional pull-up bars (although I already have one installed in the ceiling), but maybe in 2 years or so. Too rich for my blood and couldn't bring myself to build one.

re: morning lifting. I don't think I could it myself. I get so lethargic after lifting, usually I don't do anything productive after. Although when I pull through to get my ass out (night out or something) eventually I wake up from that state and don't really feel so tired, so I dunno.
