lol, yeah i knew about the Rippetoe quote, its why I havent used gloves or pads or any of that crap so far. I'll pay more attention to my grip when starting the lifts to make sure I am not doing any inadvertant slippage to prevent them. i figured the calluses were inevitable from the pressure, not necessarily the friction so I hadn't thought much about them.

Sucking it up and scraping them down sounds like a plan. Thanks dudes.

I think I might have got a strain on the hip abductor or something.

There's a slightly sharp (not like a pinpoint) pain coming from inner upper thigh when I lift my leg up or get up off a chair with my left leg. Can't feel any pain while doing butterfly stretches.

I've got it when I did 90kg squats on Wednesday, I got it on the first set but didn't think much of it and finished the sets. I did 110kgx5 deadlifts after and didn't experience any pain with that.
Couldn't feel any pain this morning until I got to the gym and did light bar squats and the pain returned. No pain while doing power cleans either.

I'm thinking of not doing squats for about two weeks. Shall I skip the deadlifts too or do them at lighter weights? I could dedicate these two weeks to improve lagging upperbody.

What do you guys think?

Anyone else?

watching some crossfit games on espn.. what exactly is the purpose of using a fat bar[bell]? it appears more difficult to grip, is it exclusive only to crossfit?

Much more to do with strongman than crossfit. Makes grip strength the weak point of the lift depending on how thick the bar is. Developing this strength will have a great carryover when you go back to normal olympic bars.

This is crazy, somewhere along the line I became someone to ask lifting advice from (outside of just this forum I mean). Even from people who haven't seen me in years. Usually in this context I just "insert" myself, people don't typically approach me for advice.

I have a buddy deployed in Afghanistan right now who's in a combat outpost who's messaging me asking me tips on lifting, and he's already a strong guy.

Shit like that really makes me feel good about how much time I pour into this.

Alien, my view is always "if I'm touching a barbell and we're over a plate, wear a belt." There's no reason not to and wearing one will only help.

On gloves, they suck. However, I would love to have a pair for pull ups just to help with my hands, as they fucking hurt when I'm done. But whatever, chalk works.

Yeah, that's how I was seeing it, but I didn't know if FS are something "special" or not. I don't like to just "assume" with shit I know nothing about.

I feel you. I fucking love this lifting shit.

Well, FS are "special" in that their main purpose is strengthing the lifting portion of the clean and jerk. Since you can use a belt for that lift, you can use it for this one. However, if your goal is to eventually progress into the olympic lifts, some people have an issue using large belts due to them hitting the bar on the pull of clean or the snatch. So, if that's your direction, you may want to use a super thin Velcro belt. Otherwise, if you're just wanting to FS to FS, then fuck it and wear whatever [hodgetwins]THE FUCK[hodgetwins] you want.

I guess this is a time to post progress pics!
It's a shame I didn't have before pictures... I had thin arms and skinny fat body.

3 months
Bodyweight: 54kg > 65kg
Height: 5' 4''
Age: 17

Squat: 40kg > 90kg
Deadlift: 50kg > 110kg
Benchpress: 20kg > 52.5kg
OHP: 15kg > 35kg
Power Clean: 20kg > 45kg
Bent over row: 20kg > 50kg
Chin up: I can do 6 reps x 3 now...
Pull ups: 5x3

All numbers are 5RM except Power Clean which is 3RM.
Bench and OHP are my worst lifts mostly because of form. I'm fixing it.

Can you guys estimate body fat from the pics btw?

Roughly 1500 calories was all I could muster for breakfast.

Two cups whole milk, two slices of bread, two eggs, almost two cups of oatmeal, a few tablespoons of brown sugar and seven turkey sausage links:

Bah, I'm drinking a shake that consists of 4 scoops of peanutbutter, 2 scoops of whey, 20oz of milk and 3 scoops of greek yogurt. I imagine it's somewhere in that ball park, lol.

Love me some front squats, I had a great recovery workout today and did cable crunches today for the first time. That's a pretty good exercise. I don't know what I did different but I got a crazy pump in my quads today during the FS.

I think squats are contributing in strengthening my back, the "rack" you place the bar in for low bar squats grew so fast to accommodate.

gainz

Squats basically work everything under the bar. Deadlifts work everything behind the bar (so everything).

Front squats will also work the shit out of your back.

Another think you might be noticing is better shoulder flexibility to create a bigger shelf.

You guys eat too much bread. :p

This was my breakfast today if anyone cares:

6 scrambled eggs
4 small pork breakfast sausages
1 medium sized baked sweet potato, chopped into pieces and sautéed in butter (yum)
1 large glass of milk

Bah, I've come to the conclusion carbs are NOT bad.

Bah, I've come to the conclusion carbs are NOT bad.

I didn't mean to imply carbs were bad. I eat two whole sweet potatoes every day and drink two liters of whole milk (that's 96g of carbs just from the milk).

But simpler, high glycemic index carbs like bread and sugars... I'd rather stay away from those for the most part. If there's something that can get me to balloon up is bread.

However, if bread is accompanied by high fat foods like eggs or bacon, it ain't that bad. If anything it'll take longer to digest meaning the blood glucose spike and subsequent insulin spike won't be nearly as bad as if it were eaten by itself.

Another think you might be noticing is better shoulder flexibility to create a bigger shelf.

That's very true. When I started doing low bar squats (as opposed to high bar) I could barely create the "shelf" without feeling like the bar was tearing my shoulders down so the bar would keep slipping. This doesn't happen anymore.

Usually I set my iPhone to shuffle when I workout but I noticed for weightlifting not all genres really get me pumped up, where as when I run I don't care as much. Anybody have any go-to songs/albums when they lift weights?

Anyone else do overhead squats? I did some yesterday with minimal weight and they are excellent for pointing out your weaknesses in the squat.

I have, and I love them.

I'm going to have to start from scratch when I get back into the gym, as I haven't touched a barbell in over two months, and when I do I'm going to gear towards prepping for increasing my Olympic squats. Before my delay, I would do the over heads to practice the catch and rising from the snatch. Humbling experience.

They're good for building a stable bottom position and flexibility in the snatch. I don't really like using them for strength because of how much more you can load on your back/chest.

Turkey sausage links I've never had or seen those before. The pork sausages are delicious but cooking them is a mess, turkey must be much healthier too.

1500 cals? weirdos.

:(

I didnt take a picture but my dinner tonight was about 1800 calories.

5 strips of turkey bacon
2 egg and cheese sandwiches
A 1/2 lb 85% lean cheeseburger
And a cup of greek yogurt.

Mmmmmmmm

You guys eat so much. Holy shit. I usually eat two slices of toast or vector cereal.. I am however only 135lbs.
What I wanna know is how all you fuckers can afford this, LOL! I get a spartan grocery list of chicken thighs, tilapia, and veggies and I'm still paying about $20 a week. I'm a broke-ass college student, I can't afford to be eating like 5 eggs a meal.

I only do them at a gym with giant bumper plates in case I need to drop the weight. But yeah, they are awesome.

Also, I suggest everyone that feels like they have stalled out on their squats to throw in some front squats and zercher squats in to your routine. It will put hair on your chest.

I'm also a broke ass college student but I have to pay around 40-50€ everytime I go grocery shopping which is once or twice a week. Yeah, food ain't so cheap in Europe if you want to eat good..

No point to doing all this lifting if you aren't going to eat. Personally, food is my biggest expense outside rent, and that's just fine with me. Have to eat big if you want to get bigger.

I pay about 70-80 a week in groceries for me and my fiancé. Our food budget is one of our highest budgets. It would be much cheaper if I wanted to just eat like pasta or microwaved junk for dinner, but having meat every meal can add up.

Same here. Food is my biggest expense after rent nowadays. Used to eat like crap and didn't spend too much on food then but things have changed.
