Fuuuuuu tried hook grip on deadlift just to try it out.....split my thumbnail in half. Hurt like hell even before that. Maybe I did it wrong but fuck that...never again. I'll just work on my grip more and do mixed when I need to. I can do 415 for reps double overhand so it's not like grip is a problem for most of my sets.

I've struggled 7 weeks on a silly ass weight, as all my other lifts are going up either 2.5kg per week.

Like others have said, do them standing and lower the weight if you can't handle it. Get your form right.

Standing press works more muscle mass so that's what you're supposed to be doing as your main lift. Seated press is an assistance movement.

I want to get into better basketball shape. Doing a full body routine that has three different workout types. Push day , pull day, leg day. Any tips?

If I were you, I'd do a five minute warmup of light to moderate rowing, and then hold the squat stretch for a minute or two. Then do twenty leg swings both legs, then ten bodyweight squats to depth. Before pressing, windmill your arms around to warm up your shoulders.

The movements themselves will act as a stretch.

Thanks will try that.

Making some chili con carne in my slow cooker for the next few lifting days. Threw in 1,4kg of frozen minced meat, 400g of kidney beans, 800g of tomato sauce. Spices will follow after the meat has unfrozen (which will probably take some time).

Nomnomnom :p

So, I've decided to ditch Leangains. The brain fog and chills were getting way too bad for me to cope with since switching to a cut - my work productivity had decreased massively which is completely unacceptable.

I'm sticking to a Leangains-esque routine now except with a breakfast made up of coffee with 15g of butter & 1 tbsp of coconut oil and a 4 egg omelette. I'm going to give it a month to see if my cutting results are affected but, already, I feel much more mentally active and my concentration has increased a ton.

I'm sure IF works really well for some people but I guess it's not for me.

how long were you on it?

how long were you on it?

I did a LG +20/-20 recomp for 3-4 months and had no issues. I switched to a +5/-30 cut and all I've had are problems.

My weight has been going down slowly (0.5kg per week) but I've unable to concentrate for longer than a few minutes. I checked my records and I've earned 40% less over the past two weeks than I normally do so the brain fog is really hitting me hard.

It's rather unfortunate because I love LG style eating and the results have been great.

Hook grip is pretty painful, especially when you're learning how to do it properly; it's a totally viable alternative to mixed grip, and definitely reduces the risk of a biceps injury.

For benching I'm certainly no expert, but the wider the grip the more chest involvement and the more stress put on your shoulder joint. I met a guy who always benched fairly narrow because his shoulders were beaten up from years of heavy benching. Regardless of width, your forearms should always be vertical at the bottom of the press. A bench in the 300s with decent form is very, very good.

That video I watched, the 132 lbs. of power girl, Jenifer Thompson, she recommends you round your shoulders and sit on them to completely get them out of the equation when benching. I think I'm going to try this with a wider grip as I've been making no progress with a shoulder width grip.

For what it's worth I wouldn't take advice from a guy that thinks strict barbell rows aren't barbell rows. (Talking about that powercast guy)

lol I never said they weren't rows.

And about the Shoulder Press, any movement that creates enough tension, time under tension and you can progress with it, will be effective.

So no he doesn't have to "Stand the fuck up", doing it seated will work just fine for his goals.

Haha wtf then. So only people into torture use it I guess?

Eventually your nails/fingers become used to it. kind of like building callouses.

Yes, you did. Quote incoming...

It may be better but it's not a Bent Over BB row

Again, don't take advice from this guy. If you want maximum bang for your buck with overhead press do them standing. The name of the game is efficiency and if you do them seated you're reducing your efficiency.

How do you guys feel about skipping squats for a day?

I got major DOMS after my last workout and I just wanna do the rest of my routine today, which would be OHP, bent over rows, and cleans. I'm pretty happy with where I am with squats right now so I don't feel mind skipping them, but I feel guilty.

Edit: Regarding OHPs done standing or not: I feel like I gain strength of my legs when doing the OHP. I think standing really helps.

You will literally lose your legs if you dont squat for a day.

Nothing wrong with skipping a day but, doing squats will help with the DOMS.

regarding hanging leg raises, I just watched the gif below to re-check form and damn, I know it's a gif in constant loop but that girl doesn't swing in the least. Going back to start position and starting anew instead of connecting reps cheating with a swing is hard. Will check that form next time I do them.

Yup, every time I want to fall out on squats/deads I feel significantly better after getting them over with. Same thing on my off days, gotta do a bunch of stretching to work out the soreness, if I get lazy and stay sedentary any potential inflammation compounds in awful ways.

Squats, box jumps and deads for your jump. Cardio for general fitness, hiit.
Box jumps would be smart. Would that also help with jump coordination? I feel like I don't always jump as well as I should. I'm 6", and can barely touch rim on my best jumps. But I feel like I don't get a quality jump as often as I should.

hmm i can't really tell you how to jump without seeing you jump first.
but, squats and deadlifts are the best for increasing your vertical.

if you want, i can try and post a video of me jumping so you can see how to do it? make sure you're not bending your knees too much, if you go too far down then it doesn't work.

i'm talking off 2 feet by the way, off 1 foot i can barely hang on the rim.

ediT: lol that gun control thread. smh bro.

I'd still like jumping form help too. I love playing basketball at the gym but I'm uncoordinated as fuck. I already know to do squats and deads- they're staples of my workouts when I am not skipping the gym for the sake of schoolwork. It just feels like I don't really know how to move right to utilize my strength.

you guys concerned with jumping, have you tried or have access to a trampoline?

some years back I was obssessed with increasing height, as I was trying to reach a high level at figure skating, which demands jumping very, very high. At that time I was living with my parents so we bought a cheap trampoline, put it in the backyard and I used it every day, trampoline was hands down the best thing for me regarding jumping.

I understand you guys need the jumps for basketball but I can't imagine it being very different, the basic impulse, I mean. Something happens to the legs that they get a spring like no other jump related activity can give (I mean in normal jumping, not on the trampoline.. obviously).

I don't know, but if only out of curiosity, give it a try if you have access to it.

Got given some creatine (monohydraat). Do you guys just dump a couple grams in your whey shake daily, or do you deal with the 'recommended' loading cycles? (seems like marketing bullshit)

Any Craze users around?

MuscleHQ.com has it up today, and I'm wondering if the Berry Lemonade flavor is more or less ass-tacular than the "Candy" Grape flavor.

Trying to work out how much rest I need.. I'm doing IF and gyming 4 nights, sport 1 night and resting wed and sat at the moment.

Would it be detrimental to do Cardio on sat and only have 2 rest day?

We did stones today, god damn that was fun. 80 lb, 110 lb, 168 lb and then a 210 lb that I never did quite get up there.

Yeah up to the shoulder for 3 sets of 5. This was my first go at them so we were focusing on the technique... which is pretty straight forward once you do it, but good to learn. The light ones I was just hoisting up, but when it gets heavy you cant do that hah.

Yeah, I was just thinking the tray might be easier to teach since you're getting it up and putting it down before rolling it back down. On the shoulder is a bit tougher to teach I would think.

I wanna get some lean muscle starting now. All I have are adjustable dumbbells though.

I can improvise with what I have, any recommendations on exercises to do? Like a link to a good regimen or something?

Well I jumped on the 5x5 bandwaggon but didn't start from just the bar as I was already working out but have struggled with the barbell rows and overhead press and is setting me back a bit. Overall goal is to lose weight and get lean though and not build muscle and get bulky.

day 15
squat 175 a little difficult but still ok
bench 120 easy
deadlift 125 easy
barbel rows 100lb with struggle, should be 120
overhead press 95 with struggle, should be 120

And amazing how much a food journal and calorie counting helped me. I had hit a huge plataeu dispite working out hard. Turns out even though I was eating healthy, I was eating too much. Now I'm eating around 1700 calories a day and I'm seeing great results.

Glad you are seeing results but what is your height/weight that you're eating 1700 cals and lifting? That seems very low. Results meaning weight loss?

Oh man, got too eager.
Age: 22
Height: 5 ft 5 in
Weight: 147
Goal: Strength
Current Training Schedule: nothing
Current Training Equipment Available: dumbbells, college gym
Comments: checking my bmi, I'm close to being overweight, but I look small. I honestly don't know where the weight comes from. I used to run and do sprints with my sister, but I was super thin then. I know you said gym membership for effective gains but I wanna get some confidence first before hitting the gym.

your confidence is lost somewhere in the gym. go and find it, and do starting strength.
