Deadlifting barefoot.

Yay or nay?

Been doing it the past couple of months. I have flat feet and I've yet to find a decent flat shoe that gives me the support I need. Chuck Taylor's don't do it for me.

Have been reading lots on dieting and weight training recently.

Enlightened that there is no significant metabolic difference, ie doesn't matter, if you have all your food in 1 meal or in 3.

Breakfast being important is a load of food industry marketing bullshit.

Weight loss can be achieved by eating less (caloric deficit - no shit right?) but also causes increased muscle loss over intermittent fasting approaches. For fat loss and lifting, intermittent fasting is the way to go.

Anyone have experience getting off a strength routine? Did starting strength for over 2 years, got up from 180 to 220, prob at just over 15% bf. All my lifts have plateaud, and I guess it's time to go hypertrophic/cut/hiit?

Been doing Keleis BB workout from bb.com forums, but would like to hear how other ppl have handled the transition.

Also- anyone have experience weaning themselves off preworkouts? I took Jacked religiously for 2 years, and had a crazy heart scare that turned out to be nothing very recently, but it basically was a wake up call to stop taking that kind of supp.

You could try 531.

There are several templates you could do; some are focused on strength and some others are focused on hypertrophy.

But it's still focused on the big lifts, and it's very modular.

Thanks. You know where I could get these templates?

I just miss the big lifts, but the problem is that my body is plateauing i think. Also, thighs, shoulders and butt are huge relative to my arms, chest (somewhat), and calves.

Well, Boring but Big is probably the most popular 531 Template.

There's also 531 and Bodybuilding

If you are interested in 531, you should buy The book. The Kindle edition is only $12. It has a ton of templates along with a bunch of assistance exercises for each of them.

And what do you mean "your body is plateauing"? Is it because your lifts have stalled? That just means you have exhausted the gains you can get from a linear progression like SS.

531 is an excellent intermediate program that can yield strength gains for many, many years. You can add at least 100lb to your squat in the first year, if you do it right and eat right.

Yay.

I had flat feet all my life until last September when I bought and used Vibrams for Deadlifting, Squatting, and using it for hour long strolls through the park a couple times a week. Now both my feet have a natural curve to them. Shit's awesome.

Age: 19
Height: 5'10"
Weight: 175 lbs
Goal: 155 lbs, although I'm not sure what I should aim for realistically.
Current Training schedule: I've been following simpler it's schedule from level 1.
Current Training Equipment Available: a pull-up bar

Comments:
I've followed simple fit before but stopped due to some unfortunate circumstances. I started level one last Monday and I've just completed level 1. I've been extremely inactive for the past 3 years of my life and I want that to change. I can't afford a gym membership right now so that explains simple fit. But I will join my local gym once I can afford it.
I'm mainly looking to lose weight and I am starting to eat right to help me along with that goal. About a year ago I stuck to a low carb diet and went from 165 lbs to 150lbs, but I gained all that weight back plus more.

I know you guys aren't my doctor but I have a question about soreness after working out. I don't really get the burn as much as soreness in my legs.( probably because I'm not used to squatting so much) I only feel sore when going up/down stairs or getting into my car. I'm going to see my doctor soon for unrelated reasons so ill ask them then, but I just want to get some more opinions on it.

Edit: I forgot to post a link to simple fit. http://www.simplefit.org/workout.html

Just have coffee instead. Works great and taste much better.

Yeah nothing wrong with deloading. I hit 250 but went back to 135 and started squatting into the pocket, pushing out my knees more, driving with my hips, etc.

It's a marathon you know?

I sometimes take my creatine with black coffee. Bad idea?

Cross-posting from the "We arent fat because..." thread:

Could someone please give some tips on weight maintenance? As I am slowly approaching my major goal, I'm becoming more and more stressed on what I can do to balance my weight. It would suck to pile it all back on after the progress I have made, and the Christmas break proved to me how simple it was to slip into bad habits.

Anyway, I'm not really following a specific diet (though I know many of you guys are low carbers). I have cut the most offensive sugars and a lot of the carbs, but I have a lack of control over some of my meals (whilst they aren't necessarily bad for you, my parents see no harm in rice, bread, pasta, ect ect, so that is what I get).

I currently average at about 1500 calories a day, do about an hour of cardio three days a week and some light weight lifting 3 days a week (still working up the courage to do this properly).

Random online calculator says my intake should be 2700ish calories a day (23 y/o, 6ft, male), which just seems ridiculously high. When the time comes, do I simply increase consumption to the relevant levels?

Apologies if this isn't the right place to ask, but it does seem as if the topic has deviated somewhat.

There is some theory about them canceling each other out since caffeine is a diuretic and creatine works by storing water in your muscles. So basically they have opposite effects in your body. I'm not totally sure what the consensus is and whether it's anything to worry about though.. I take my caffeine pills in the morning/pre-workout and creatine after workout/in the evening just to be sure.

If you want to be sure you can just do it like I do and take them at different times of the day.

I too deloaded my squat recently about 30lbs after I filmed my self, went a bit deeper and I knew the next day it was the right decision when my butt was sore lol.

Ego be damned, the body doesn't care how much weight it's under if the full rom isn't executed.

I'm sorry, I'm not sure I understand. What are your goals? Are you trying to gain weight? Lose it? How much do you weigh?

Apologies, I should have expanded a bit as initially it was in another thread.

My current goal is to lose weight, which I have been achieving, the goal in question however was weight maintenance. I'm getting worried about what needs to be done to adjust my diet
so I stop losing weight and start keeping it steady.

I currently weigh 202 pounds, my initial goal is 180.

Was thinking about coffee. How much do you usually take/do you take it on an empty stomach?

Just a two cups with some heavy cream or coconut oil. Fat helps caffeine absorption. Yes, I take it on an empty stomach. I don't like to workout with food in my stomach.

Well, for someone fat like me, who wants more definition, I'm going to cut/lose fat. (Which I'm in the process of right now) However, someone like you doesn't have much fat, but you also don't have much muscle. Sounds to me that you want to put on some muscle. I would recommend regular lifting along with a slight caloric surplus. You'll put on muscle that way. Also, don't worry about getting too big and stop worrying too much about what the scale says. I guarantee if you start lifting and eating good, you're gonna look great and you're gonna feel great both physically and mentally. Don't be afraid to eat.

once you know how to lose weight, it's cake. Seeing your abs go away during the winter kinda stinks though (

i guess im wondering how the compliment went, youre pretty lean so i'm not surprised your back looks like that - i guess i was expecting a little more muscle.

142 for 5'10 is low , but you seem young in your profile pic. BMI doesnt mean anything

Thanks guys, I don't know why that seems like a big hurdle for me to get over but I guess I'll have to.

Also yeah, I still dunno what the guy was talking about since I'm skinny :p

I'd go so far as to say that I think you should do a dirty bulk instead of a clean one.

You really don't need to bulk as a beginner, though. He'll get nice newbie gains eating slightly above maintenance and upping his protein intake. It will take time, but then he doesn't have to worry about cutting.

True bulking seems more effective more intermediate/advanced lifters, otherwise he'll put on some fat too.

Ah yes, all true. Forgot about newb gains.

I don't have a lot of experience at the intermediate level personally, but there are a lot of options:

1. 5/3/1
2. Texas Method
3. Starr M/L/H
4. Bodybuilding split of some kind

Yeah so i followed everyone's advice and my squat felt awesome today, just starting light at 185 to build form but pushing my knees out really helps I was always pushing my knees forward as I never considered them during the lift, but, well shit. I also now use the bounce on the upward push and that helps, too.

The only other issue I have besides is watching the california strength instruction video, where the guy under the watch of the instructor has a buttwink (or he's using the hip flexor?) and he holds the bar with his wrist taking some of the force. Is rippetoes' advice not apt for the high squat? Thanks.

I hate to requote but this post fell victim to being last of the last page, any advice?

He's just giving you a hard time for not wanting to get big. It's from this video.

what I don't understand is why people equate muscled = big

a muscled guy is someone who has visible and trained muscles, period. The size of said muscles is secondary. Some guys go for a leaner look some other for a burlier look, both are muscled.

if anything, the bigger guys have loads of fat which could potentially exclude them from the "muscled" category. There are some guys in my gym that have some somewhat visible shoulder and back workout, but everything else is fat and they show their massive guts with pride, they are one tiny step from being just fat and not muscled at all.

stop trying to drive with your lower body is all I can think of. Your hamstrings shouldn't be feeling any stress. It suggests that your form is lacking.

Hmm, weird. Everything feels off to me if I don't have my feet planted firmly to help stabilize things and I can't keep them planted without putting at least a little force behind them (which then turns into too much force when I'm really pushing the weight up there).

I'll go watch some more videos, thanks.

It sounds so weird to me to even be feeling it there at all.

You're telling me, it wasn't even something I knew could happen till recently but I looked around online and it's been brought up on more than a couple forums that turned up in the search results.

Just got back from my first training session.

I need to take a shower and then take a nap.

Only problem is that I feel like if I move any more, I'll die.
