I've never seen any. are you talking about newb gains or after that?

After, research done on people that would be considered fit ( which incidentally negates being called "average person" but you all get my drift ), my bad. Would be interesting to read.

Pulled 355 on my deadlifts today for 5 seps. So stoked right now. Next week I get to see if I can break that 2x bodyweight barrier. Wasn't at my home gym either, visiting my parents so had so find a different gym. Liked their equipment itself better, but the space they had it in was far too cramped for my taste. Was nice to use a platform though. Makes loading the bar so much easier!

Next week, 365lbs, here I come!

Awesome!

I'm going to have to talk to you soon about diet for my mom. She's diabetic and her A1C went up. Going to make a plan for her next week.

Oh ok. well, like I said I haven't ready any studies unfortunately but after frequenting forums for a while this has come up. Most forums I've been to seem to have a consensus that adding 4-5 lbs of LBM (naturally) over the course of a year seems to be a good year. But again this is all anecdotal.

I'll help you however I can, but my diet is pretty damn boring and most people wouldn't want anything like it! Lol

If her diet is on the healthy side it could just mean she isn't taking enough insulin to cover it/has become more or less sensitive to it/etc, as A1C really just tells you how often you're rocking too high a blood glucose level. I'd need to know more about the type of carbs she is eating and activity levels to say anything more though. Feel free to PM me anytime, I have 2 areas I'm passionate about and they are fitness and diabetes.

Oh, how high has her A1C gotten?

Thanks man. Im having her track on myfitnesspal. So far a lot of fruit and grains (crackers, cereal, etc) but she's willing to put in the effort to change. Right now she's taking in like 75g of sugar a day.

I think her A1C is 7.1.

I seriously cannot move from those squats. I was supposed to run today but that will have to wait until tomorrow.

How long should I wait to squat again after my 100 rep day?

Well, I will say right away that cereal for the most part has a horrible glycemic index:

http://www.gilisting.com/2004/05/glycemic-index-breakfast-cereals.html

Even the best cereals available for the most part give a huge spike to blood sugar. To be blunt: diabetics really shouldn't eat cereal. I know it sucks to hear, as I love me some Honey Bunches of Oats, but steel cut oats it is for me.

All Bran (not the flakes) being the main exception to this rule for me, as it ranks pretty low. She ideally wants to stick with foods rated a 50 or below.

You should avoid doing something so silly again perhaps?

New to the whole fitness area.. Anyways, I'm looking to gain weight. Currently, I'm about.. 5'8" 125lbs and I want to try and get to about 135-140, at the least.. I'm working at a moving company from Mon-Fri approx. 5-8 hours a day so I feel I get a bit of exercise but I am and always have had troubles gaining weight. I've been the same weight for about 3-4 years now and any attempt of gaining goes for not. I bought a cheap bottle of protein powder from Wal-mart the other day in hopes that will help. Anyways, does anyone have any suggestions on gaining weight for people with rocket speed metabolism? I eat quite a bit so maybe I'm eating the wrong foods.

TLDR v.;
Can't gain weight for the life of me, been the same weight forever. Moderate amount of exercise and I eat as much as possible. How do I gain weight? What foods..

Great to see you back bud, have you tried external rotations to see if they help your shoulder?

No but my shoulder feels pretty good. I have some stretches I do. Today I did some weighted pull ups for the first time in many months. Shoulder feels good. I got 10@25, 8@35, and two sets of 6 with 45lbs. I am pleased.

Drink a gallon of milk a day. Also, you most likely arent eating as much as you think are.

Do you like peanut butter? Eat a lot of it. As posted above, buy whole milk and drink it often. Atleast a half gallon a day. Everyone who thinks they are eating a lot really isn't when the calories are counted.

Jesus, I just got like 540 points for biking for 45 minutes (14.7 miles). That's nuts.

When I started to get issues I did external rotations and my shoulder issues completely went away, just some food for thought. Might keep it in good health.

I don't know if any of you guys listen to the CAGcast or have ever used the fitbit they talk about on the show, but it's a device I'm very interested in to give me a better idea how many calories I'm burning during my daily activities, particularly when I work. Has anyone used one and might be able to attest to the accuracy and features it has? Probably post this in the weight loss thread as well.

It's basically the equal of a step counter device.

The only accurate consumer device that I know of is the Bodymedia Fit. You can get them at Best Buy and Amazon for $150 - $200 I think. They say they are within about 10% accuracy, give or take.

I wouldn't trust the Fitbit honestly.

I've taken a break from the gym due to my wrists.

GAF, they're killing me. After a set of bench press or shoulder presses, my wrists hurt like all hell. I cannot even do push-ups now without them hurting.

Perhaps I need to tone down on doing heavy weights all the time, or use those gloves with the wrist support. I don't think I can sustain this. They're not swollen or anything, but any sort of "push" action I perform with my hands is immediately responded to by a shot of pain.

Any advice or support is gladly appreciated.

I had the exact same problem in my left wrist, and it was solved by a physiotherapist. I had a very sore tendon in the wrist, and the physiotherapist "broke down" the tendon by plucking at it hard for a long time (imagine plucking a guitar string). I believe this technique is called deep transverse friction or tendon plucking. Did this four times over four weeks, letting the tissue heal and grow back in between. By the end, the pain had disappeared completely, and I'm not back at doing bench presses.

So I pushed the prowler around today and boy did that kick my ass. I haven't lifted as much lately since I'm working on my conditioning and doing muay thai but damn, does that make me feel like my conditioning is terrible.

What you should do first depends on your current stats.

So you aren't severely overweight then?

I'd focus on muscle building, then worry about weight loss later. You may burn some fat as well if you're a newbie, but muscle should be the focus.
yea not that fat.i mainly have fat around my abdomen and sides. by the way is there a way to target specific parts when it comes to trimming fat? i hate how my sides are out so my body looks weird.

I went from 165 to 215 in about 18 months after 7-8 years of lifting.

Any special regimen/diet/workout?
Clean?

Nothing special except routine, volume, being consistent and eating too much food. I was around 7000 calories (I think it was 6600) on lifting days from clean food sources. I almost always ate the same thing everyday so it was easy (routine) to prepare and eat. My breakfast took the brunt of my daily calories (1/3) because work break was at 10am and I ate at 6am. Saturdays I cheated with poutine, box of chicken wings, hotdogs or burgers. I had to eat a shit load since my job was hot and physical, metal work. Didn't care for macros (f/p/c) as long as I got decent amount of protein. Yes clean, the only supplement I used was Whey but stopped, I just drank more milk instead.

Lifting I did higher rep range between 8-15, some 20 rep squats while Fsquats and DLs were usually lower reps. Lifted 5-6 days a week for 1-2 hours with squats every second workout.

Thanks, much appreciated. Looking to go crazy with the bulk myself but getting second thoughts now that I'm having such an excruciatingly time shedding the last kilos of fat I'm looking more towards lean gains without too much fat because I really don't feel like going through cutting again soon.

I'd be curious to hear your diet. I'm type 1 diabetic as well and am looking to make gains.

My diet isn't that different from others here. Lots of grilled chicken, fish, turkey burgers, pork, beef, brown rice, sweet potatoes, milk, beans, whey shakes, etc. The biggest difference for me I think compared to others is I actually can't be as low carb as them, because as you know, you can't always know when you'll need a jolt of sugar and have to drink juice or something. That and I'm just more conscious of everything. I try to stay under 100g of carbs a day, but sometimes that just doesn't pan out.

What sort of diet are you on currently?

Yeah I don't think the weight loss thread really gets the fact that it's almost impossible to run less than 30g of carbs in a day as a diabetic. I pretty much always need to eat something before or after a workout (sometimes I can mess with my basal on my pump enough to stay pretty stable, but ultimately end up going low).

As for food I tried changing my whole diet about six or seven months ago. I never eat breakfast, lunch consists of low carb wraps, some kind of vegetable, fruit (strawberries, plums), Greek yogurt, and string cheese. Dinner is some kind of meat (chicken, steak, burger no bun) with some kind of vegetable, piece of toast, milk, salad, cottage cheese. And then if I have snacks I try and stick to nuts, more fruit, frozen yogurt (the one shitty thing I still buy), etc.

But by no means am I 100% to that as I'll be the first to admit I'm lazy when it comes to making food and I'll go out and buy a meal fairly regularly. I wanted to at least change from my old shit diet, and manage to stick to it about 70% in a week. Ultimately by doing so it ended up clearing up a lot of my intestine problems (had surgery on my colon in high school) and ended up dropping from my peak of 198 pounds to where I am now at 178 (I'm 6'2 for reference). But now I need to start moving towards more weight training which is what I'd like to start attempting to do now...

I've always had pretty good control of my diabetes though, pretty much averaged around 7.0 whole life, with end of college and to where I am now at about 6.5.

Really think I'm gonna give that condensed 2x a week lifting schedule with cardio 7x a week a go. Gonna see what Wendler is so up about on it.

I'm usually around a 4.5, for what its worth with regard to my advice.

The one advantage studies have found is as a diabetic, if you do cardio first thing in the morning, you will burn more fat than a nondiabetic, because you can not give yourself insulin, forcing your body to instead get energy from fat stores. I'll look for the studies and shoot you them via PM if I find it. This advantage can help offset those extra carbs you have to take in.

Otherwise, the only thing I'll say for certain is more protein, especially if you want to gain muscle. Most of what you're eating sounds fine, but try and replace something at lunch especially with some protein, chicken or fish are especially good sources if you're still trying to lose, beef and pork if you're trying to go for greater gains.

As our former Mr. Universe Doug Burns and his insulin pump can attest, it doesn't have to hold us back.

*edit*

The one thing you may not expect and should do some reading on, is that after you lift heavy, you may find your glucose shooting upward instead of down, because heavy weightlifting makes the liver release glucose, and you dont have the insulin naturally to counteract it. I still find myself shocked when after a severe workout my glucose shoots up to 250 at times.

Cheat day. I feel great, as if I needed this influx of carbs and fat and calories. Started the day with bacon and eggs and toast. Went to the farmers market and got fresh veggies for the week. But I also picked up a loaf of jalepeno cheese bread. So for lunch I took 2 slices of that, xtra sharp cheddar, and some leftover turkey kielbasa and fried that up as a grilled cheese sandwich in leftover bacon fat. Then for dinner had 2 beers, 3 slices of stuffed banana pepper pizza, and 4 chicken wings with blue cheese. Thinking of a scoop of cookie dough ice cream on a cone a bit later. Then back to eating clean for the week.
