Directed by Yimou Zhang (Hero and House of Flying Daggers) for $94 million and starring Christian Bale.

Synopsis:

In 1937, Nanjing stands at the forefront of a war between China and Japan. Inspired by true life events, and starring Christian Bale as an American trapped in the middle of battle, The Flowers of War follows the epic journey of John (Bale) and 13 courtesans as they seek refuge in a church compound together with a group of innocent schoolgirls from the church.

Struggling to survive the violence and persecution brought on by the ruthless Japanese army, an act of heroism leads the group to fight back and risk their lives for the sake of everyone. Through treacherous surroundings and facing unimaginable evil, The Flowers of War manages to tell a genuine story of hope, love and sacrifice. With nowhere to run and nowhere to hide, fate always has a way of bringing the most unlikely heroes together. Starring Academy Award winner Christian Bale (The Fighter), The Flowers of War is written and directed by Yimou Zhang (Hero, House of Flying Daggers).

Something doesn't mesh well in that trailer. It doesn't seem to know what kind of movie this is. But as this is a Zhang Yimou film, I'm definitely in.

I wonder what the conservative Japanese ruling elite think about this movie being spread all over the world.

So far the conservative elite of Japan who bankroll the government and everything have gotten easily away with refusing to allow Japan to acknowledge their war crimes or apologize to China.

"Hey Mike, what was the plot in that trailer for the most expensive movie made in China of all time?"

"Well Christian Bale is a minister and he's trying to protect these women from... some asians. So he enlists help from... some asians. The antagonistic force is clearly... some asians. But he won't let that stand in the way of protecting... some asians.

Seriously, was I supposed to discern that it was China vs Japan from that trailer?

Btw, last year's "Under the Hawthorne Tree" is an amazingly tear-jerky tear-jerker and I happen to love his tear-jerking (The Road Home is one of my favorite movies - period); plus he once again pulls an unknown, wildly charismatic actress out of nowhere

Yep, another alternate title was The 13 Women of Nanjing.

Ah, interesting, thanks.

I wonder if there will be a domestic Chinese markets release prior to America, but based on the current look of things I'd say no.

I say that because I'd want the HK BD release, the quality is just amazing. *hugs his recent purchase of HK BD Wuxia"

edit: Usually, video releases are released like roughly 2-3 months after their theatrical release (unless it's Edko then it's pray they get around to doing it).

It is supposed to come out on December 16th in China. It still doesn't have US distribution, but because it is an Oscar submission, we probably will see it by the end of the year.

Ah ok, that answers that, I should be seeing a BD release like in Feb or March.

Thanks!

With a poster like that, I can't help but think it will be nothing short but a trainwreck.

This is Zhang Yimou we're talking about. He directed Curse of the Golden Flower. I'll never forgive him for that. Even his "good" movies weren't really very good. He's the most overrated big-name Asian director working today by a wide margin, especially after John Woo made Red Cliff actually pretty damn good and redeemed his Hollywood career.

There should be more movies and such about this event. I didn't know about Nanking until an East Asia History course in college. We focus so much on Europe and the US when studying WWII, and it is ignored what people went through elsewhere.
and I am quite sure people in asia put a lot more focus on the asian part of the war

I have to agree. I love Red Cliff. And I think Hero is really overrated. Sorry, Donnie and Jet.

Thanks...I know. I was just stating that it's called a World War and our learning of it has a pretty narrow focus.

Yeah, last I heard Universal was heavily circling it. They screened 20 minutes of it for distributors when I was at Toronto Film Festival that I thought went over well...but since no one picked it up, I guess not?

Raise the Red Lantern. Red Sorghum. Ju Dou. All fantastic films.

He's sold out a long time ago, but it doesn't mean he can't put out something good.

Sounds interesting.

(somehow the thread title made me think that this would be a government funded propaganda flick)
