Completely agree; he's taken his position for granted. I've always maintained Rooney is an utterly world class player but he needs to show it. The Rooney of 2005 and 2006 was so explosive, I honestly felt like he had the Messi about him, that he could change a game in an instance. Don't really see it now.

Needs to retain his focus.

Plus thing about Rooney is now that we've got RVP he's not a guaranteed starter, at least on current form. If United use 4-2-3-1 he does not easily fit in. Rooney is an excellent player in a few positions, but United now have better options in all of them.

Rooney could play as a centre-forward, but we have RVP. Rooney could play in the playmaking, probing role behind that central striker, but we have Kagawa. Rooney could even play out wide, but we have several wingers better suited to the job.

Least you expect of a top striker is that they show up fit and motivated.

Rooney hasn't done that. He'd be in the same box as Anderson, but Anderson actually appears to want it more so far.

Getting sliced open might drum into his brain the fact that football doesn't really give you anything compared to what it takes and demands from you.

Can we take him on loan? He loves Newcastle.

Manchester United will assess the extent of Wayne Rooney's injury before allowing Dimitar Berbatov to leave for Fiorentina.

Rooney top scorer of last season for Man United

Man United fans question his desire

---

Silly Man United fans.
That's basically how Rooney looks at it. Scored 30 goals last season, job done, getting smashed this summer.

It's a disgrace how over-weight and unfit he is right now. The other players who played in the Euro's (and actually played and were there for the whole camp, Rooney got an extra 2 week holiday) have turned up in much better shape than him.

Rooney at his best is better than either of them IMO. When he's on song, he's our best player and the best player in the league.

The problem with Rooney is, when he is good he's really good...but then when he's bad...oh dear.

Good article, but I disagree that it was only about money. I think he gnuinely had concerns at the time that City and Chelsea were outspending United and had more ambition and purpose in the transfer market.
Quite possible and likely, but it was the money that convinced him to sign. We haven't really looked intent in the transfer market until now, almost 2 years since he signed his contract and really, what kind of guarantees can you make in that situation? "Don't worry Wayne we're gonna sign some good players" - I know he's thick...but he'd have to be really thick to sign a 5 year contract off the back of that.

Selling walcott would be a terrible move if we have no replacement planned. The ox would be forced into taking up that position, which is not ideal. He needs to play down the middle.

Jesus Navas has been rumoured as a potential replacement for quite a while. We could probably get a great price for Walcott from Liverpool.
Edit:
He suffers from chronic homesickness,[22] to the extent he walked out of training camps within Spain because they were too far away from Seville. He also suffers from anxiety attacks[23] and seizures.[24] Navas initially refused to travel with Sevilla during pre-season to the United States due to his acute homesickness, later deciding that he would travel in a bid to rid himself of this condition.[4]
That could scamper any move.

I don't think we'll sell Rooney, but I'd be interested in what we'd do if we let him go.

IMO we probably wouldn't spend all the Rooney money on a world class striker. SAF would probably buy another defender and a winger. Then, if he felt like it, he'd finally get around to buying a midfielder.

United have RVP, Welbeck and Hernandez as senior strikers. Henriquez is also on his way too. I don't think we'd need another striker if Rooney was sold.

Problem?

With FFP looming there was no other way to transform City.

It's just abjectly ludicrous (on Rooney's part, and on anybody else's) to compare the spending patterns of clubs trying to get to the top in one go to those of a regular, if stupendously successful, club with a strong youth setup and a fairly established squad.

Calling it "greater ambition" is dribble. If anything, it's ambition of a different kind, not a greater degree. The idea that City or Chelsea deserve credit for spending like mad is absurd even in the tiniest doses.

I love the cheerfully moral gloss on SPENDING LOADSA MONEY ON AN INSTANT TITLE-CHALLENGING ELEVEN

That's more of an issue for people looking on with envy than those who can enjoy the fruits of such a situation. I can assure you the fact we had "earned" our success with oil money caused no asterix to pop up in my head as we celebrated the title last season.

Nor has it since. Not sure about other City fans but it's not a moral quandary I encounter frequently.

Yeah, I see what you're saying. I just disagreed with the fact it was only money that caused him to go public with his frustrations... but like you said, it was more than likely mostly about money because they didn't make any significant signings until this year.

You'd also have to spend at least £20m on him.

I doubt Wenger would do that.

Definitely no asterisk. It's just that there was no intellectually reputable comparison to be made between the spending patterns of United and City/Chelsea at the time of the Rooney wobble. And to equate spending patterns with ambition is sort of Leeds-ish thinking, which even excluding the way they exploded, isn't a good road to go down.

Having "concerns that City and Chelsea were outspending United" is the reddest of herrings. Pure Stretford shite. Of course they were. Of course they would.

Well as I mentioned, Walcott will have the English tax so we'd get a good price for him. He seems to have been a long-term target for Arsenal as we've been rumoured pretty much every summer.

Yeah I agree. City's spending pattern was quick and dirty. It was just snap up the best players we can and offer them a shed load of cash, cause that's all we could offer them. We had a finite amount of time to build a title winning squad.

United, they can offer them a lot of cash and a lot more. It was always a risk a player choosing City over any other top club.

But what about their name on the best site in the world?

And I have no overwhelming problem with this. I get it.

The Stretford/Rooney angle that United were naturally obliged to compete (in straightforwardly monetary terms) with this hyper-accelerated project bothers me more, because it's so fucking cynical. At least City were doing it for silverware.

But the Liverpool staff weren't the only ones worried about a thigh injury that could sideline the player for two months: his wife, model Ariana Lima Bonfanti, was also concerned about her hubby's health.

Being unable to get to the bench to ask him if he was okay, she instead asked one of the policemen on duty at Anfield to go and quiz the 25-year-old star about what had happened.

It was a touching thought and an ingenious way to ask the question, but you can see what Lucas thought of it in his reaction: he waved the policeman away angrily, while his team-mates chuckled away at her antics.

Even if Arsenal had the money, I have my doubts if Wenger would actually spend it on one player.

Shanghai Shenhua's financial problems may lead to them selling Didier Drogba. Juventus could be interested. [Gazzetta dello Sport]

But I'll take him for ONE season (or till January) if it means not signing a shitty stop gap striker.

Swansea City chairman Huw Jenkins wants the future of Manchester City target Scott Sinclair resolved before the transfer window closes.

The winger was left out of the Swans squad for Saturday's home game with West Ham United and has told the club he will not sign a new contract.

Reports suggested Swansea had accepted a bid from City but Jenkins said a deal had not been reached.

We haven't actually agreed any deal with Man City at the moment," he said.

"I would have thought if they really wanted to sign Scott Sinclair they would have dealt with it a little bit better than they have. But that's their business.

"But it has dragged on too long and I hope one way or another it will be concluded the next couple of days."

Completely unrelated to Football. My laptop died on Saturday with HDD failure. My PC followed suit today. Never had HDD failure in my life and then two go in four days.

Don't worry dc, it's probably cos Mansour doesn't carry small change. He needs to break a £25m note.

Goal.com reckon Nani wants a £5m pay off if he's forced to leave. It's like an inside out agents fee. Genius. Nani stays with us.

He can piss off if he wants a £5m pay off.

But that's just it. He can't. It's perfect. Nani doesn't want to leave, he's found our weak spot and is exploiting it to ensure he stays.

Love you long time Naanbread.
IMO if SAF really wants Nani gone then he'll be on his way soon enough.

The club and the player would probably reach a compromise and we'd sell him to Spurs for peanuts.

Just finished the first episode of season four. Good shit. Still don't think its god-tier so far as the only character I think is incredibly awesome is Walt, but it's vastly entertaining stuff.

I've caught up completely now and I'd agree that it isn't god-tier, very good show though.

Don't think Nani will go but it will fuck me off if he plays shite for 75% of the season while putting in magnificent performances in the other quarter that make me dream of what he could do if he was consistent.

Just sell him and get me Nathan Dyer.

Both cool, but compared to the amount of great characters in The Wire or Deadwood, its nothing.

i honestly don't think City would buy Rooney. I don't think Mancini would be interested. Just as an aside, its the first time in 7 years Rooney has not been on the FIFA cover in any country in the world

Obviously his shine is glowing darker
