Udinese vs Braga was pretty great. How exactly do these series work? How many games in a series (which I suppose differs by round?) and how does the cumulative points system work?

And I'm asking more specifically about Champion's League groups, if that helps.

Groups, each team plays each other 2 times, win is 3 points, draw is 1. 2 teams progress from the groups.

I thought AVB said he wasn't going to rapidly change the Spurs team?

He isn't. Last season's best XI was this:

Friedel
Walker Kaboul Gallas BAE
Sandro Modric
Bale VDV Lennon
Adebayor

As it stands only one of those players has left the club, and Vertonghen has taken King's place in the squad. Dembele and Sigurdsson have brought more options in midfield but the most of last seasons XI is still here and still expected to start.

No, we have signed Dembele and Sigurdsson who can both play in VDVs position. He's been a great player for us but he is getting older and he does get injured all the time. If someone offers the right money, it makes sense to sell him. I just hope that doesn't happen (though if he does go I won't miss his god awful corners). He is such a natural finisher with his left foot, some of his finishes last season were better than RVP.

€12m is unacceptable and barely more than we paid for him. If that's all they are offering Levy will probably tell them to jog on.

Why would you expect his value to have increased while at Spurs? He's the same player just a couple years older and a few injuries later

Are you familiar with Daniel Levy? We bought Kranjcar and Pienaar for £6m and sold them for £12m.

The price we paid for him was a steal.

I'm sure we'll manage in the league, but we won't go far in the CL.

Pirlo won't be around forever, it's a shame we're wasting this year on Bendtner.

I look forward to following all the bendtner tweets from the coming season. Truly a worthy replacement for Elia.

Why don't we take another leaf from the Barca playbook and start playing without a striker?

like agent like player

FOOTBALL bad boy Joey Barton’s agent was caught with cocaine when cops pulled him over for driving while banned.

The tournament proper begins with a group stage of 32 teams, divided into eight groups. Seeding is used whilst making the draw for this stage, whilst teams from the same country may not be drawn into groups together. Each team meets the others in its group home and away in a round-robin format. The winning team and the runners-up from each group then progress to the next round. The third-placed team enters the UEFA Europa League.
For this stage, the winning team from one group plays against the runners-up from another group, and teams from the same association may not be drawn against each other. From the quarter-finals onwards, the draw is entirely random, with association protection. The tournament uses the away goals rule: if the aggregate score of the two games is tied, then the team who scored more goals at their opponent's stadium advances.
The group stage is played through the autumn, whilst the knock-out stage starts after a winter break. The knock-out ties are played in a two-legged format, with the exception of the final. This is typically held in the final two weeks of May.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UEFA_Champions_League#Format

There are always two games vs. a team except the final (qualifiers, group stage, KO stage). The first and second leg, the home & away game from an individual perspective.
If the score at the end of the second leg is equal then it comes down to the goals you scored in your opponent's stadium.
If you replicate and the score from the first leg (and none of the teams have a away goal advantage) then it goes to extra time & then to penalties.

/edit
Oh yeah, obviously it comes down to points you aggregated in the group stages and if two or more teams collected the same amount of points then it comes down to the:

Tie-breaking criteria

If two or more teams are equal on points on completion of the group matches, the following criteria are applied to determine the rankings:
higher number of points obtained in the group matches played among the teams in question;
superior goal difference from the group matches played among the teams in question;
higher number of goals scored in the group matches played among the teams in question;
higher number of goals scored away from home in the group matches played among the teams in question;
If, after applying criteria 1) to 4) to several teams, two teams still have an equal ranking, criteria 1) to 4) are reapplied exclusively to the matches between the two teams in question to determine their final rankings. If this procedure does not lead to a decision, criteria 6) to 8) apply;
superior goal difference from all group matches played;
higher number of goals scored from all group matches played;
higher number of coefficient points accumulated by the club in question, as well as its association, over the previous five seasons.

I think the fanbase is pretty split. I don't think anyone will have said that he's done a bad job when looking at our midfield and defense, but they'll just begrudge him for promising a top striker and delivering Bendtner. I mean, maybe everyone is wrong and Bendtner will knock in 20+ goals?

It's not even about the promising anymore. It's what we NEEDED THE MOST. Yeah, Isla and Asamoah and possibily Giovinco are great signings. But they weren't the priority, the top striker was. Marotta failed to sign one - Bendtner certainly isn't that - and that's that. The money he had, let's not kid ourselves here. He choose to spend it otherwise, he choose to wait, hoping for I don't know what bargain to come his way and it didn't happen. He fucked up.

Bendtner is done. Loan + option to buy for 6M€. His salary should be about 1.5M€. Whatever, welcome Nicklas.

Looks like it's done

I don't even want to translate, we can't get trolled this much from Arsene. FML.

Del Piero to Arsenal? wut

Tbf Real sold him at a time when they just wanted him gone.

A bit like us with Berbatov.

Point taken, but Berbatov is also 31. I think £5m is a perfectly fair asking price. It's not like you didn't get what you paid for. He was top scorer and helped you get the PL title.

Also, Villas Boas has signed two players who play in Van der Vaart's position, and with his injuries and poor form, it's not as if they need to keep him. Making any profit at all on him would still be excellent business. You'd have to be insane to pay the £14m or whatever Levy is asking.

Richard Wright was at the team photo session earlier today, so they're waiting on announcing him. Probably want to unveil all the new signings, Maicon etc, at the same time.

Fuck me, he was Preston North End's goalkeeper about a month ago. What the fuck is wrong with City?

He even had a trial with Colchester a couple weeks ago.

I agree, that's a stupid price. He's aged, injury prone, and with Spurs signings not of massive worth to them.

That never stopped anybody before. We sold Crouch and Palacios for £20m. We almost sold Giovani to Udinese for £10m but the useless turd didn't want to go. If we accept less for VDV then it will be a special case where family reasons play a part.

I think ESPN's Roger Bennett revealed more about himself than he did about Laudrup in his recent blog.
Does the Premier League boast a more dashing figure than Michael Laudrup? With his tailored suits, chronograph timepiece, and lustrous mane, the debonair Dane resembles a man who might well know James Bond on a social basis.

The new Swansea manager only enhanced his elegance this weekend when he patrolled the coaching area alongside West Ham’s sloppy Sam Allardyce. A contrast in styles akin to watching a Ferrari FF park besides a clapped-out Oldsmobile Cutlass.

Is everyone happy with their clubs summer signings? I'm delighted with the improvements that have been made to Uniteds squad. A world class striker and a brilliant attacking midfielder have strengthened our first team, we have competition for Evra and we've also signed two highly rated 18 year olds.

Is there any position you'd like your team to fill before the transfer window closes?

All I want is a centre midfielder. If we get one it'll be the best transfer window of all time.

Eh, I think they can still contribute for the qualifiers. Probably won't be in the WC first 11 assuming we get through.

Seems a pisstake to let them help get there and then drop the fuckers. Would rather we started the rebuilding now.

Rapid Vienna, Partisan Belgrade, Genk all to win @ 11/2

Both teams to score: Dnipro V Liberec, HJK V Athletico Bilbao & Club Brugge V Debrecen @ 9/2 Betfred

Both teams to score: Hannover V Slask Wroclaw, AZ Alkmaar V Anzhi & FC Twente V Buraspor @ 9/2 Betfred

All 6 teams = 28/1

Liverpool signing Samed Yesil from Leverkusen it seems.

Heard promising things about this kid, never seen him play mind you, but meant to be highly rated.

Maicon to City has been mentioned as a possibility all summer. He played under Mancini for a few years while he was coaching Inter so I guess he felt like he wanted to add some experience to the squad. It does seem a bit puzzling to me given the fact that Micah is not very good as a CB so it causes a glut at the RB position, but Maicon cost the team next to nothing so it can't hurt having additional depth.

Kind of non-plussed about Sinclair but he has some scoring ability and we needed a winger and he is young and was cheap so it's a smart buy.
